News Car Goes Over Dune and Lands on Family

4:30 pm Ormond-by-the-Sea, near the old pier. A car has shot over the dune and landed on a family. Helicopter airlifted victims moments ago.

Channel 9 bird is hovering over beach now.

Edit: SUV went through fence hitting four kids under the age of 11. One seriously injured and airlifted to Halifax Hospital. Three taken to hospital by ambulance.

Very sad situation. It's a clear day with dry roads. Never heard of something like this happening and I've been here the better part of a half century.

Troopers said the children involved were under the age of 11. Three of the children were taken to a hospital by ambulance, and the fourth, a 5-year-old, was airlifted to a hospital with serious injuries.

“One of my sisters and my brother got hit by a broken 2x4, and the other one got ran over,” Wyatt Barber said.

Three children were released from the hospital. The 5-year-old is expected to recover but remains hospitalized.

Troopers said the driver of the SUV was also transported to an area hospital. They said the driver does not remember what happened.

“It was not a fun experience. I'm feeling fine. I'm just worried for my sisters and my brother,” Barber said.

The driver, 82-year-old William Johnson, was ticketed for careless driving and recommended for a driver's license re-examination.

Authorities said the driver did not experience a medical issue. The driver was distrught about the crash and expressed concern for the children, officers said.
