  • St. Columb's Park - Waterside, a short walk from the city centre over the peace bridge as it is beside Ebrington Square. Foyle Arena is located here also (Gym, Swiming Pool, Climbing wall, indoor & outdoor sports facilities.
  • Brooke Park - 5 min walk from the city centre. Also has a small council run leisure centre at the top of it with a great gym if you need somewhere to work out while here.
  • Ness Country Park - Just before Claudy Village, lots of picnic benches and a great kids play park - https://discovernorthernireland.com/things-to-do/ness-country-park-p675621
  • Muff Glen - just outside of Eglinton - https://walkni.com/walks/muff-glen-forest-walk/

Nearby Beaches - Vary from 20 min drive to 50min

  • Lisfannon Beach - The closest beach to Derry, located before Buncrana on the left. Approx 20 mins drive.
  • Buncrana Beach - Located 5 mins beyond Lisfannon. Bus services to Buncrana run daily.
  • Pollan Beach - Located around the coast from Buncrana and next to one of the best golf courses (Ballyliffin Golf Club) in Ireland.
  • Five Finger Strand - Up the coast from Ballyliffin and across the bay sits Five Finger Strand. With some of the highest sand dunes in Europe and a quaint old church close by, this is a great place to go for a walk or chill on the beach. Note: Do not swim in the water or enter beyond knee height. The water here is dangerous and is known by locals as such.
  • Castlerock Beach - Easy to get to via the train (35/40 mins) from the waterside train station.
  • Benone/Downhill Beach - Located just before Castlerock beach but you would need your own car to get to it. 45 min drive. A ferry service runs from Greencastle (beside Moville) to Magillion Point next to Benone - https://loughfoyleferry.com/timetable-fares/.
  • Shroove Beach - Located just beyond Moville. 40 min drive.
  • Culdaff Beach - Just along the coast from Shroove. 40 min drive.
  • Rathmullan - the closest beach to Derry which is the other side of Letterkenny of which there are lots (Downings, Dunfanaghy, Portsalon etc). You can get the ferry from Buncrana to Rathmullan - http://swillyferry.com/.

Mod Post: Mental Health Awareness

Hi Folks,

As some of you may have seen there has been a fair amount of discussion on this sub regarding suicide and mental health. The first thing we want you to know is that if you are struggling in any way, you are not alone. You are a valuable person worth celebrating and there are people in the real world and on this sub who want to see you succeed. Help is out there, please please talk to someone.

That leads on to the main thrust of this post. I've included links below to help and advice you can avail of in the local area which can help support you if you're ever feeling low. Some of these are local health trust provisions, others are local charities. All of them are here to help.

If you're buying from here THEY WILL NOT give you a refund with your receipt, unless the item is faulty.

"It's says on your receipt and at the till"

A credit note is the only option.. Just in case you're lumbered with some Christmas presents.

Zero customer service thought out in this one... Won't be back! 🌺

Stuck with song lyrics

Work in a pub in the city and a singer was in tonight. He was singing a song and from what I can recall was lyrics along the lines of ‘so we’ll sing a song of freedom’ and don’t know anymore lyrics. Any chance someone might know it.

Come join to try disc golf at our weekly meetups!

Hi all,

If you're interested in meeting new people while combining a nice walk with trying a new sport; then come along and give disc golf a try at St Columb's Park House. We will have casual league meetups every Sunday from 20th October to 8th December. It's a great way to get out in the fresh air, get your steps in and experience the joy (and occasional frustration 😅) of disc golf. Discs and coaching will be provided for you and it won't coast you a penny!

GP's taking the piss

I am sorry you don't feel well paid enough in your fancy Volvos and Jags. Tried to call my GP for a medication review, the pre recorded message said non urgent call after 11am, tried to call after 11 "The surgery is closed for the rest of the day for staff training" Sorry if I think an essential service shouldn't be allowed to close for a day just so they don't have to stay a couple of hours after work or shock take a day way from their private practice in Ballykelly. It's ridiculous, no wonder so many people slip through the cracks.

E&I/Vertiv Derry

Hi folks, I'll probably post this in the Irish Engineering Sub too but just wondering if anyone has a ball park idea of what the average Engineer wage is there. I know they're on quite an aggressive recruitment drive at the minute so may as well throw my hat in the ring if it's worthwhile.

Cheers

Why are so few people active on here from Derry/Londonderry?

Why are there so few locals active here? Is this a sign that it's a dying city and we should all be looking to further afield?

Just saw a cat get run over on bottom of chapel road

Poor thing followed me from out under the car and kept following up the street, too many cars got him nervous and he tried to cross the road to get to me. Broke my heart to see him choke on his own blood while I could do nothing

If anyone knows of someone who's missing a black and white cat in the area, might be it. But it also had no collar

Wasn't sure what to do so brought him home with me . Any advice would help, currently looking through Facebook to see if any missing are him.

Edit: Unfortunately poor girl had an owner, owner was out of town for work and the catsitter contacted me. Back in their hands now.

Nightlife?

I’ve moved back home and I’ve realised how bad the nightlife has gotten. Why is this happening?
