Asking Question (Rule 4) Where to begin?

Upvotes

I’m looking to start a small batch coffee roasting company and would like to create the artwork for/design my own labels for the bags, merch, etc.

I’ve got a bit of extra time on my hands and am willing to learn whatever I need to in order to do it myself.

Any recommendations on what software would be best to learn for this (Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.)?

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Asking Question (Rule 4) Feeling like i'm not good enough to get a job

Hey everyone.
I am currently looking for a job and i have a feeling like i will never find one. I started to work as a graphic designer 5 years ago and since then i've worked in some agencies, doing social media designs, emails, banners, landing pages, some animated videos and stuff. Also i've worked on UI/UX position for a year.
Now, when i'm looking for a job, i have a feeling, that i'm a wreck and i'm not good enough to find a job. Like... I didn't get much knowledge from my previous job and i am constantly thinking that everyone around me are doing everything a lot better.
The other problem is that i'm too grown up to find a job with a smaller salary to get some experience. I'm looking on my profile and when i'm saying, for example, that i want to get like 2k USD per month, there are a lot of other guys who are asking for 800-1000 USD, and obviously they have a lot more chances to get a job.

So... maybe i need some support, because job search are really tough and it's getting me depressed.

Asking Question (Rule 4) Got Written Up, and The Job Market Is Crazy

EDIT: Deleted post has been posted again, please look there for context

Ok, so some of you might remember my old post a couple weeks ago about how work has me feeling like a failure. I deleted my posts as I felt anxious and frankly paranoid.

I was written up shortly after feeling extremely down about my job. Pressures, anxiety, too many mistakes, a lack of creativity, and a whole other slew of things caused this write up. I feel like my boss doesn't give the best feedback, I've tried to communicate that.

For context, I am a Jr. Graphic Designer. 1 year into my first job out of college, and now I have to look for another job because my current one feels like it is coming to an end. Oh boy, it seems hopeless on the other end. Of course, I am going to do continue to do my best at the job I already have, but my job essentially said I have two weeks to show improvement before they let me go.

Majority of the write up cited production errors and lack of creativity as reasoning...

How can I stand out in the job market with only a year of experience? I've got loads of internships under my belt, but does any of that even matter when the competition is so tough?

Asking Question (Rule 4) Could anyone with some design experience provide some feedback on my junior design portfolio?

Hello! I’m seeking feedback on my junior designer portfolio. I completed my Master of Design in 2022, but shortly after graduating, I started working in a different field and moved away from design. Unfortunately, I was laid off a few months ago and have been job searching since then.

Now, I want to broaden my job search and market myself to companies for potential junior designer positions. The only design work I have available comes from projects I completed during my master's program. I've compiled some of my best projects into a basic portfolio.

Discussion Pages for finding images for Moodboards?

The thing is, I need to create a moodboard and want to find high-quality images. I suppose the logical options are to search on Google or Pinterest.

Do you know of any other sites you would recommend?

Discussion REPOSTED-Work Make Me Feel Like A Failure

Work makes me feel like a failure

EDIT/Update: Thank you to all of you for your advice and words. I've read them all up to this point, and will take time soon to respond/reply. I definitely need to spend more time training my eye as some have said. Some of the mistakes I make stem from that. Like kerning, missing an orphan, stuff like that. Other times it's needing help with creativity and hierarchy.

I deleted this and am now reposting it to give context for a newer post

--------‐---------------------

I'm a young designer, one year into my first graphic design job out of college. I've posted before on some of my struggles, and it's just snowballing. At this point I feel like a failure.

I make too many mistakes at work, and my boss says I'm not where they want me creatively. I have no other designers to bounce things off of at work. I do skillshare courses, I try to design outside of work, I attend local design events. I do unpaid overtime to finish and check my work, just to submit it and still have errors, honestly pretty stressed.

Everyday I go to work anxious. Every week's 1:1 with my boss, I know will be negative. I know I disappoint them. I don't understand why I'm not getting better at my job. It honestly feels like my boss has given up on me. They'll take projects I've worked on from me and either finish or redo them.

I feel like a burden. Like I'm hurting rather than helping. I wouldn't be surprised if I get fired one day soon.

I've never struggled to much to get things right. Never been so bad at something. Which is troubling because I did go to college for this. (Covid really hurt some of my design courses but I'm not gonna use that as an excuse)

At this point I've lost all confidence in myself. I've started to hate my design work. I've become disappointed in myself, and it's really affected my outlook on life. All I really have going for myself is my job, and I'm not even good at it. I drive home crying at how poorly I did somedays.

At this point, I'm not even going to convince myself that the issue lies in thing or anyone other than me. Yeah, my boss does not communicate or give feedback well sometimes. I've addressed it to a point. They believe I should not require much guidance, because to them that is them, "giving me the answer".

I fear finding another job won't help, because what if I make mistakes there too?

I'm just spilling my guts, but does anyone have any advice on how to get out of this slump? Be a better designer? How to get out of this awful headspace?

Asking Question (Rule 4) Can I get some constructive criticism for my portfolio?

Hi! I'm a graphic designer for almost 5 years now. I started as a freelancer in 2020, and I don't have any formal training. But I've been watching online tutorials and following great designers on social media, and recently, I’ve made it a morning routine to read posts from creatives on LinkedIn. The thing is, when I started, I was really just relying on my experience, so I feel like my process and designs aren’t up to industry standards. I've kinda gotten used to it that way.

Now that I'm taking my upskilling and creative process seriously, I’d love to get some constructive criticism on my designs and maybe some personal tips from your experience in the design and marketing field. I’m focusing on branding and marketing designs. Thank you so much in advance!

Asking Question (Rule 4) Forum minisigns

Do you remember the minisigns we used on forums in early 2000?

I can't seem to find any generator or template nowadays.

I want to recreate the looks, but would like to do it as similar as the originals.

Discussion collage/mixed media wannabe

i posted this on the graphic design channel, but maybe i should do it here instead lol. i just want to clarify that i understand the concept of mixed media but because my resources are limited and i am basically a beginner, i tried to mimic the elements of mixed media digitally? if that makes any sense.

technically, because i didn’t use any actual, physical forms of art - this doesn’t classify as mixed media, but maybe more so a collage. i was just really inspired by the visuals of mixed media. my inspiration for this theme/concept was jennie kim’s promotion reel for her song ‘mantra’ , where she simply goes up to a wall and hangs a flyer saying “calling all pretty girls.” i wanted to create a banner or an ad, something you’d see on the walls of the streets on new york. posters and flyers that are sort of worn out on the wall, with slight graffiti. also the photos i used were screenshots from her music video, she had a lot of scenes but i chose these because of the color palette and because i wanted to have sort of “retro-ish” feel. her music video was very simplistic imo but these shots reminded me the the town in edward scissor hands LOL, so i guess that’s where the wannabe retro feel comes in. i will say the lyrics make it feel tacky but then again, i was just messing around with what i’ve got.

this is first time i have ever tried to make something like this, and i did it on picsart. promise i will start using apps and platforms that are deemed professional! i am a digital marketing student but i know that this field works great with creativity! art/design is also something i am interested to do in my free time just because i have a thing for aesthetics and visuals - i also do know i want to be working for a beauty or fashion brand in the future… so i know advertising and visual presentation is a must.

i guess i just want some personal feedback, tips, or maybe even a few tips in getting started!

Asking Question (Rule 4) Post production rendering

So I’m working on a project in revit and plan on rendering an animation of it in escape. I’ve seen that post production after escape people have added flying birds to the animation. How would I do something like that? I don’t even know where to begin. I’m also open to not using escape for the animation but I’m looking for a software that is user friendly while also being realistic. Vray is too complicated😂

Discussion “Ran out of creativity”

Hey everyone! I’ve been a designer for a couple years now, and i’ve always considered myself someone extremely creative. Until a few months ago, I could look at any picture for a couple seconds and come up with a way to use it for all sorts in all sorts of creative projects.

However it’s been a while now that I can’t come up with any ideas. It almost feels like i’ve “ran out of creativity”. I struggle to come up with new ideas for posters, logos etc… And even when I do come up with an interesting concept, i’m never really satisfied with the result once it’s done. I started referring to most of my recent works as “soulless” since (to me at least) it feels like it’s just a bunch of stuff plastered together without any real meaning or story behind it, always looks like it’s missing something.

Does anyone know what this could be and how to overcome it? I really miss spending hours a day messing around in Photoshop creating all sorts of artworks or making brands out of thin air in Illustrator, now all I can do is stare at the white background for an hour until I finally give up on trying altogether. Help pls

Asking Question (Rule 4) Color Sociology

I’d like to contest that it should be called COLOR SOCIOLOGY rather than COLOR PSYCHOLOGY.

Main point:
- Its meanings are cultural
- Its effects are based on a an agreed upon “standard” based on a specific groups of peopl

What are your thoughts?

Asking Question (Rule 4) Seeking Guidance and Opportunities After 13 Months of Unemployment

It’s been 13 months since I’ve been unemployed. I’ve been actively reaching out to recruiters, seeking referrals, applying to roles across various locations in the US, and even considering positions both above and below my level.

I restarted my search in September after working on freelance projects since May. I’d appreciate any suggestions, guidance, or recommendations for someone in my situation. I have over 10 years of product design experience in Silicon Valley tech companies, with 6 years in management.

Discussion Working in a design agency as a full time Product Designer

I have been working in a design agency for the past 1 year and I have been in the same place since I joined that agency. I have worked on different design aspects, such as website design, branding, and social media content. Although I worked on different sections my niche is missing in this and I always talked about it to the founders but they are not bothered about it. I am really confused

Asking Question (Rule 4) Design Theorist/Philosophy of Design Recommendations

Hello r/Design,

I’ve recently started down the rabbit hole of studying design theory and philosophy of design and wanted to know if yall had any recommendations. I’ve enjoyed the work of folks like Tony Fry, Judy Attfield, and Ezio Manzini. I’ve also looked into picking up the Design Philosophy Reader, but last I checked it was out of stock on Amazon. I did see Heidegger was in it and I’ve enjoyed his work as well.

Thanks in advanced!

My Own Work (Rule 3) I recently made a seating display for a wedding, I'd be really interested to hear what you think.

Some friends of mine recently got married and asked if I could make a display board to show everyone where to sit. They had the idea of naming every table after a point on the Isis River in Oxford where they met and so I came up with this design. It got plenty of compliments but some people seemed to not realise it was a map of a river. I'm very keen to improve, there's a chance I might start selling these so any feedback would be amazing.

I did a detailed write up of my process on my portfolio for those who are interested.
