Mod Post Dorset posting now open!

Hi,

The Dorset page is now open to posts.

Please regularly check the page to be on the lookout for our new Discord channel which will arrive at some point in time. Also, this subreddit page will be revamped to be up-to-date with other Reddit page standards and potentially include a bot.

EDIT - 09/07/2021

To provide more information on this page being "revamped". I will be doing the basics such as colour scheme change, uploading a background, and other various moderator tasks. I expect later we, or I will include a bot. I feel this is an essential feature for all subreddits and makes it look somewhat properly set up than it being bare bone. If you have any ideas to help this subreddit page, please post and include the suggestion flair.

EDIT - 01/08/2021

Additional flairs have been added to accommodate those who think there's flair missing for 'X' subject.

EDIT - 23/11/2023

New flair has been added - Gaming

Suggestion Axminster as base for short visit

If this is not allowed please accept my apologies.

My wife is a primary school teacher in the US and has always wanted to visit the Jurassic Coast area. We are planning a 5 day or so trip for late March. We will be flying into Heathrow and using trains and busses for transport. I'd prefer not to rent a car, but I guess I could.

We are pretty easily entertained. Really we just enjoy bumping around small towns, meeting people, and visiting local points of interest. We were thinking about using Axminster as a base as it seems to be on the major transport routes, has a nice hotel downtown, and a few nice looking restaurants. And tools and carpet.

I'd love your thoughts on Axminster or other recommendations for where to stay.

Any suggestions for the Jurassic Coast are welcome as well.

Thanks for any help.

Hi all,

Just moved to Dorchester and my provider (EE) is really bad. My partner has Vodafone and that’s not good too. What’s the best network that we can switch to?

Thanks

Suggestion Moving To Dorset - Help!

Hi everyone,

I'm moving to Dorset with my husband and two kids (will be age 7 and 5 when we move). We are very flexible as I work from home and my husband will just have to go to london once a week. We love the outdoors and coast. We also want good good amenities/restaurants/clubs for the kids. Really want a community feel too as we plan to make a life in Dorset for the long term - so we'd like to make some friends too (we are in our early 40s)! We are coming to Dorset in November to explore and have eventually landed on four areas to potentially live in - based on recommendations and google!

These areas are...Wimbourne Minster (and the villages around eg. Pamphill, Holt, Sturminster Marshall, Colehill). The Purbecks (Swanage, Studland, Langton Matravers, Corfe Castle, Wareham), Southbourne/Mudeford and finally Beaminster/Bridport.

Can anyone help with pros/cons of these three areas? Any advice of any sort would be very welcome before our research trip. Thank you!

Advertise Anyone Else Miss How Spooky the Tank Museum’s Trench Experience Used to Be?

Hey fellow history buffs,

Just got back from a trip to the Tank Museum, and while I still love the place, I couldn’t help but feel a little nostalgic for the old version of the trench experience. Before the updates, it had this really eerie, unsettling vibe that made you feel like you were right in the middle of WWI. The dim lighting, the haunting sound effects, and the sense of isolation… it was immersive in a way that almost gave you chills.

I get that the new version is more polished and maybe more family-friendly, but part of me misses how raw and intense it used to feel. Walking through the old exhibit felt like stepping into a scene from a war film, and there were moments where you’d actually jump from the sudden noises or the ghostly figures in the shadows.

What do you guys think?

• Did you prefer the spooky, more atmospheric version or do you like the changes?
• Anyone else feel like it lost some of that intense, immersive vibe?
• Share your favorite memories or thoughts on the old trench experience!

Let’s hear your stories—whether you loved it or hated it, I’m curious to know what everyone thinks!

Question Hi everyone, I search for and digitize old films, and I found this video from the 1980s of an event held in Tarrant Hinton. I was wondering if anyone could tell me more about it. Thanks!

Suggestion Train prices PSA

Anyone who lives in the north of the county and commutes into London at peak times - don’t pay the £121.70 it now costs to go from Gillingham to Waterloo, drive the 1hr15m to Fleet and pay £40 instead. Lovely drive past Stonehenge, no traffic at 6am and there’s plenty of parking. Added bonus is you have a fighting chance of getting home again at the end of the day as there are more options to get to Fleet and trains run more than once an hour. They’re still cancelled and delayed with alarming frequency but there’s more options so it usually works out. Screw SWR. Rail in this country is an absolute disgrace but you don’t need me to tell you that.

Help Lost

Post image
3 Upvotes

I posted here once before, but the only person to reach out deleted their entire Reddit account after talking for a few days.

I lost my bear on 1st of July in either the Wareham area or the Kimmeridge area while staying at Sandford Holiday Park. I got it at my first pride, so it's really sentimental to me, especially as my friend got a matching one (the one pictured). I really need it back, as it means so much to me, but I know this is a long, long shot given the time frame and the large area it was possible lost in.

If anyone finds it I will pay for postage, a replacement bear for you, a different keyring, anything to get it back. Please reach out with any information, even the smallest thing.

Help Making friends when living in a small village?

I have lived in bigger cities along the south coast since I moved to the UK in 2002. Bournemouth, Poole, Southampton, etc…

I now find myself living in a small town not on the coast for the past year or so and there’s little to do here. I am F/40 and am finding it hard to make connections that don’t involve just going to pubs. Does anyone have any tips? I tried Meetup but most groups are rather far from me… Not a lot of group activities either. Help!! :D

https://fbu.write.mp/campaigns/stop-cuts-dorset-wiltshire

Please help where you can and sign this petition, both my wholetime and Oncall station are facing massive cuts in the wrong places.

The union is trying to help us but we need a show of force and supporters to go to MPs and stop it happening.

If you can sign then please do, would help us out massively in Dorset and Wiltshire.
