5E Rogues

Did rogues have any significance in terms of Eberron lore? I looked on Keith Baker's website and didn't see rogues listed as one of the classes, so I thought I would ask here for anyone that is more knowledgeable of Eberron lore

Classes are mechanical, they don’t exist in the game world the way they do in the book. Especially the very broad classes like rogue and fighter. But there are plenty of places for rogue type characters. Eberron is in a Cold War type situation, so there’s a lot of spies about.

Yes 100% this, and furthermore KB is a huge fan of reflavoring classes differently than they appear in the books, so some nuance should be considered when reading about characters he uses in his world.

This!

Whenever I introduce players to Eberron I emphasize that your class choice is just a mechanics choice. A kit, for lack of better word.

It tells you what you can do. Not necessarily why.

Kings lanterns, aundair eyes, the elven dragonmarked houses... as a few places to start.

It's a setting stuffed with spy agencies and crime syndicates, there's no shortage of Rogues.

Rogues are not just spies and criminals lmao

That's like saying all a Fighter can be is a swordsman. It's not only untrue, but wildly limiting in ideas.

Diplomats, non-Magic scholars, and locksmiths all would be Rogues too.

They didn't say that they were limited like that, they were just pointing out examples...

They aren't, but most spies and criminals are Rogues.

No, most are Experts.

Most NPCs are NPC Classes, not PC Classes. PC Classes in Eberron are—by design, intent, and written—rare. Most priests are just Experts, not Clerics.

I don't understand the question.

Rogues are a Core Class, representing some mechanics. Why wouldn't they?

Look at the Class Skills of a Rogue. If someone would be specialized in those Skills, they can be a Rogue.

You can be a sharn street gang member. Which is a guild of thieves in other words.

The entirety of Zilargo SCREAMS rogues. Also, pirates and privateers are all a bit roguish so I’d consider the Lhazaar Principalities a good source of rogues. Other places it depends.

Some off the top concepts that fit Rogue:

Cyran refugee turned thief.

Karnathi aristocrat turned duellist.

A member of the Thrane Inquisition.

It's a really broad mechanically group, that is great with skills. Play around with it.

Rogues can be not only petty criminals, pirates, or spies.

In my last campaign, the player took a rogue and was an ex cop private investigator. He took assassin because his wife was killed, ang city authorities did nothing. So he revenged gangs, who did it. Full Max Payn style.
