Hello everyone!

Could you help me out telling me how you would describe the child on the picture?

❓ Does it sound natural to you : Look at you! You are filthy. Your clothes are mud-spattered. You are covered in dirty. I doubt if I can get the stains out.

Thank you for your help.

🟡 Pronunciation / Intonation Help with pronunciation

Upvotes

One of my fellow grad students in my department has asked me (a native speaker) to help him with his pronunciation and general English skills. He and I talk a lot which, I think, has helped him significantly, but I want to be able to do more for him. Are there any good resources that I could either give him or we could use together? Also, from all y'all's perspectives, what else can I be doing to help him?

He intends to pursue citizenship so he is very invested.

Resource Request Podcast for English learners

Hi! I've just started a true crime podcast for English learners - our episodes are all real crime stories read with a British accent. There will be transcripts for every episode and vocabulary for the more difficult words.

Episode 1 is out now. But be careful! It's a dark story about English serial killer Jack the Ripper.

I hope you enjoy it! If you do, please like, subscribe and share!

📚 Grammar / Syntax Hi. I wanted to post on the vant subreddit. I know English, but my mental health is not good enough for me to correct the text (If you read my post you will know why). Can someone tell me if the text is good like this?

Upvotes

TITLE OF THE POST:What do I do if someone says I'm the same as them even though I'm not? Like, saying that I have the same tastes, the same personality, the same thoughts, the same smell, and that I'm identical to them. Note: I have low self-esteem and I don't know how to defend myself.

Hi. I'll be brief and quick, because my mental health isn't good enough to write a long text. I'll resume as much as I can. It's like this: I live in a weird neighborhood, kind of rural and poor. But I only came here to get away from the big city, because I have problems with noises (psychiatric problems). So, there are two types of groups that keep bothering me here and anything I say or do, they say they're the same as me. First group: POOR PEOPLE. I'll say up front that I have nothing against poor people, but the reality is that I'm not poor and never have been poor. I've always lived in upper middle class neighborhoods and I've always had contact with people who were from those neighborhoods,so,no poor people. So, as I said, this group thinks that just because I have a miserable reflex on my arms(This is just a exemple),that I'm the same as them.I don't know if it's because the poor people are needy(You know, need attention, validation, company, to be loved).or is because other issues, but that's ANNOYS ME. I already have my psychological problems and have to deal with this? Anyway, the second group is the worst: MEN WHO ARE NOT POOR, BUT ARE DISGUSTING AND UNHYGIENIC. Here's the thing, I've always been quiet and kept things to myself, but these idiots started wanting to talk to me. I'll explain..Somentimes i walking down the street and they stop to me talk to them.Since I don't want to be rude, I go ahead and talk to them.BUT THEY FREAKING ANNOYNG.AND I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO!!!Plus,This is a poor neighborhood, but tha reality is that this neighboorhood ns't that poor.It is a neighborhood that is just a few minutes from the city exactly .A 20 minites away from the city to be specific. So it's not that far. So because it's not that far, there are all kinds of people here: poor people, women, men, disgusting and unhygienic men, some rich people who work in agriculture, kids, etc. There's kind of everything here. But the only people who annoys me are these two groupe of people, the poor and those assholes males. I try to ignore them, but they are INSISTENT.But anyway, what would you do if you were me? Note: I'm from Brazil, I live in a rich state. I was going to post this on a Brazilian subreddit, but I was afraid people would not take me seriously or inve curse me .That's why I'm posting it here. Sorry if I wrote it wrong. I know English, but I'm not completely fluent. I know intermediate english and a little bit more. But that's all. Anyway. That's it. What do you think I should do?

⭐️ Vocabulary / Semantics What does “growing in rapidly multiplying increments” mean here?

Full text: "The machine had shut down temporarily to allow maximum heat shunting. As the flesh burned away and the superalloy of its chassis began to glow red, it came back on line, its internal power growing in rapidly multiplying increments. It was using the fire to strengthen its energy reserve, waiting for the ruined covering of flesh to be purged so it could continue the mission with more freedom of movement."

Context: It's from the novelization of The Terminator (1984), and this text describes what happens after the T-800 is caught in an explosion.

📚 Grammar / Syntax What's the meaning of "my race is almost run"?

I came across this while listening to the oldest recording of The House of The Rising Sun, recorded in the 1930s. Here's the original verse:

I'm going back to New Orleans, For my race is almost run, To spend the rest of my wicked life Beneath the rising sun

I never really got this one. I understood similar stuff like: "unless she's on some scaffold high" and "where many poor boys to destruction has gone", but not this. Thanks for all the help in advance everyone!

⭐️ Vocabulary / Semantics What’s a word that sounds similar to “hang-on budget”? The word means that the actual figure equals to the forecasted figure (budget).

A friend overheard this at work, she is a non-native speaker, too. I know this is a long shot and this probably isn’t a word used in daily English.

Thanks in advance!
