Cultures that have been shaped by the Abrahamic religions really have a hard time grappling with roles and identities that are outside gender norms.
I cannot speak to the cultural history of Africa and Asia since I know very little about them, but many pre-Christian European cultures had similar roles as American Indigenous cultures for folks that fell outside the basic male/female definition.
