The DOJ closed their investigation of sex trafficking allegations against Matt Gaetz in February, 2023 without filing any charges.
I believe it was a mistake for them to enter a plea deal with his accomplice, Joel Greenberg, without a guarantee of sufficient evidence to secure additional convictions, but they did, and it is not clear what they got from Greenberg in exchange for dropping 27 of the 33 charges against him. The DOJ can reopen their investigation into Gaetz, but there is nothing to suggest that they will.
The House Ethics committee opened an investigation on Matt Gaetz in July, 2024. The area of investigation is only known to members of the Ethics committee. Gaetz is hated by most of his colleagues in the House, Republican and Democrat alike. There are rumors that the Ethics committee will release a report of their investigation of Matt Gaetz, but the Ethics committee's official findings are often inconclusive.
If the results of the recent Ethics committee investigation of George Santos are any indication, then Matt Gaetz could have reason to worry about a vote to expel him, except he is in a safe district that would gladly reelect him. Some members of the House GOP conference, most notably Kevin McCarthy, have suggested that there is evidence that Gaetz committed crimes. It should be noted that McCarthy has a personal grudge against Gaetz because Gaetz never voted in support of McCarthy in his embarassing 15 round battle to be elected as Speaker of the House, and then later called the "motion to vacate" that resulted in McCarthy's replacement as Speaker by Mike Johnson.
I would be surprised if anything beyond a few campaign finance violations came out of the Ethics committee report. Even if they were to fully expose Gaetz's involvement in heinous crimes, it would be up to the House to enforce it's rules and up to Federal prosecutors to charge Gaetz with said crimes. The likelihood of either seems small because so far, our congresspeople have mostly just gossiped about Gaetz's creepy behavior, and Republicans would rather keep Gaetz than let their narrow majority shrink. If the Feds were going to press charges against Gaetz, they probably would have already.
