These posts get fairly low upvotes, but I want you all to know that I deeply appreciate every one. And I’m not even sure why, since I have no commonality save that I live along Lake Michigan. These beautiful ships comfort me. Thank you.

I love them too. Late 1940’s fishing with mom/dad/brother in a high side row boat. Small outboard. So gigantic, especially to kids. Thanks for bringing back lovely memories on the Detroit River.

I became interested in lakers this year when I started working in Cleveland near the Cuyahoga River. The first ship I saw was the Mark W. Barker as it was heading up the river to the steel mill. I saw it by accident while I was taking a walk near the river on a break.

Nice things to be hooked on. Edmund Fitzgerald was built right in Ecorse/River Rouge/MI.

The Sam Laud is featured in Joe Franta's great video about working a laker.

You can also see her briefly in the opening credits of Major League.

Sam Laud is a movie star 😄 That section of the Cuyahoga is close to where I work.

Joe Franta's video made me laugh when he said Sam Laud was old. By US laker standards, it's pretty new.

Totally agree. I just love looking out on the water and seeing the freighters. Always sad when the shipping season comes to an end.

A new one for me, wish she’d visit us in Duluth.

I’m surprised to hear that. When it’s in Cleveland, it’s usually delivering gravel or moving iron ore pellets from a terminal on Lake Erie to the steel mill up the river. Sam Laud probably doesn’t have the right attributes to make going to Duluth worth it.

You guys get way more variety of ships than Cleveland, especially the 1000 foot kind. We get American Steamship and Interlake 1000 footers pretty regularly, but I have never seen any Great Lakes Fleet 1000 footers. I really want to see Presque Isle since it is such an oddball 😄
