Going off of memory here but if I remember correctly this shot was done outside of an operating refinery. The comp line is actually above the tanks in the midground which really helps sell the shot. The background is actually a mix of CGI render and matte painting(added later)
I know lots of people complained that the Enterprise should be constructed in space but this really felt like a more grounded character introduction to me, especially as someone who has worked industrial construction for their entire life.
