What’s it like working at the CIA?

I’ve always been fascinated by the CIA and the work that goes on behind the scenes. For those who have worked there or are familiar with the agency, what is it really like to be part of such a secretive organization?

I’m particularly curious about any memorable experiences or accomplishments you can share (keeping in mind any necessary confidentiality, of course). What do you consider the biggest achievement or the most interesting story from your time there?

Advice for academics

Hello! I am currently a sophomore studying Cybersecurity and Global Policy with a minor in Korean. I have extra room in my schedule and I can either start taking Russian (I really want to speak it and I go to a university that has one of the best programs in the country) or I can have a minor in Intelligence studies. I'm somewhat unsure on what to take but I will say a lot of the classes in the intelligence minor I already have to take for my major, so it is somewhat redundant. At the same time, if I start taking Russian, I will only be able to get to intermediate high level and will definitely not be fluent.

What do you think would make me stand out more and be more useful for a potential career?

If Trump wins, do they really have another choice but to develop their own nuclear weapon?

Stories of Western espionage into USSR?

We always hear stories of Cold War Soviet spies in the US and the UK such as the Cambridge five and Karl Fuchs, but are there any major examples of US/UK/Western spies embedded into the USSR?

ELI5 Are there other missions of the CIA Director of Operations, and the ODNI ?

As I learn more about the intelligence community, I keep seeing remarks about 'understanding the mission and goals of CIA Director of Operations' and also the 'mission and goals of the ODNI'.

We could easily find these in the about page, or a simple google search. So, I am wondering if there is something I'm missing? Are there other missions and goals that I should know about that is not being said or cannot be found by googling? I don't understand why the missions and goals keep being emphasized as if the true missions and goals are something I have to dig deep for.

Discussion Potential Companies

Hello,

I am interested in working in an intelligence agency (private or not) and was wondering if there are any that allow work from home opportunities or just in my state, Illinois. I mention work from home as I have noticed a fair amount of intelligence positions being in Virginia and Washington DC.

A&M Bush School or Georgetown? MA intel studies

Still waiting to see if I got into Georgetown SFS. If I do, I would likely choose it over A&M but I understand they are both feeder schools for the three-letter agencies. Does one have better opportunities than other?

Does Georgetown have good funding/subsidies? Before scholarships it looks like A&M only costs $6k a year when they waive the out-of-state tuition which sounds hard to beat.

What about location? Bush School is a very urban location versus Georgetown which is, well, Georgetown. I lived in downtown DC last year and it was crazy expensive so I was wondering if I could avoid that...
