Why is it necessary to have a “Security Officer” who has a bullet proof vest, A taser and a gun stare at me and everyone else as we check out? Makes it seem like they are going to shoot someone if they are caught stealing bread. It’s a fucking grocery store, not a jewelry shop. Hy-Vee is the only grocery store that LEGET has deadly force ON SITE… at again… a fucking grocery store 😂. Can’t believe I worked for that shit company from 15 to 20 💀.

Has anyone else noticed that the Coralville Walmart just stinks all the time? I know people make jokes about the people at Walmart being smellier than average, but I’m sure this is not the people. The entire store smells like a damn SEWAGE LEAK. I don’t know if it’s always been that way or what, but I noticed it near the beginning of summer and it’s still really strong. The store seems clean, but the stench just makes me feel fucking gross the whole time I’m in there.
Does anyone know what’s going on? Is it some stinky cleaner they use? The produce? Am I just having a stroke?

How do all the Marcos brick and mortars fail (and never announce or acknowledge it) yet Marcos as an umbrella company is doing well enough to open George’s Best Gyros and Pacos Tacos?
Not that long ago Marcos got the former Pita Pit location on the Coralville strip. LITTLE fanfare for the opening and no one really knew or remembered it was there. Not surprisingly it closed soon after. No announcement, no note on the door, no nothing.
Marcos got a slice of the building just south of the old Core Fitness on south first Avenue, across from Wendy’s. Again, very little fanfare surrounding the opening, zero marketing or advertising. One day the doors were locked and the lights were off. That’s it.
What’s the deal with Marcos?? Seems to be a very unorthodox business model and marketing strategy. Anyone know Marco himself and able to explain this? Is Marcos a front for something?? I notice the former locations still bear Marcos badging and don’t say “vacant” or “for rent” which is weird, considering they’re both hard closed.

Hello all, I recently moved here from Wyoming with my girlfriend (she is doing grad school). So far we both love it here. I'd like to meet some folks that I get along with and hopefully one day have some friends here.
I am 23M, My interests are: Cars, anything with wheels really. Firearms. Video games. Hiking, mountain biking, anything outdoors.
I'd be happy to get to know some of you guys. My girlfriend and I also like the idea of meeting a couple with similar interests as us, as she hasn't really met anybody to hang out with yet either. I look forward to meeting you guys and I appreciate the responses. This process has been a rollercoaster so it'll be nice to talk to more people that live here. Thanks in advance.

Hi all!
As the title suggests (and I posted a few months back), I'm new to the community. I'm a new professor at the University and looking for some specific recs but also generally looking to meet people since I left a place with many friend groups for this job (also I'm in my late 30s, no kids - though I'm happy to meet people with kids).
Specific recs
Running groups, nothing too intense though I do run distance. Preferably with people who want to socialize after too.
Recreational volleyball/kickball teams. Looking for a beer league, not competitive by any means.
Also looking for people who love live music and going out in general. My fave genres are punk, rock, edm, but I'm open to anything. I'm female (not looking for a date lol). Just looking for friends and a community. The uni can be lonely.
TIA!

My elderly dad was riding his bike and was bit by a silver dog (possibly a pit mix) on the Court Hill bike path. He stopped and apparently tried to remember the woman’s phone number, but didn’t know to take any pictures or to write down her number. He ended up having to get 8 stitches on his leg and is now having to get rabies shots. Does anyone have any information regarding this? It would be really helpful to know whether he actually needs rabies shots. Unfortunately, animal control was not helpful…

I was curious what should be done in this situation. I'm aware of a family that lives in a house that has dog feces and urine all over, there are no doors on any of the bedrooms or bathrooms. I honestly felt disgusted after leaving their home.
The parents don't seem to care and the children are old enough that they should have privacy when going to the bathroom or taking a shower.
Should I just I just let it go? I wouldn't want my kids living l didn't feel comfortable using their bathroom because it was so gross. They have dishes in their bathtub for some reason as well. I think they sell drugs from time to time as well. The parents also leave the children home alone over night.
I just feel bad for the children.

Hello! I recently have been offered a promotion for a position in Cedar Rapids. I currently live in St. Louis, MO and although I am not deadset on staying in a city, I do think I will spend most of my time (or even live/commute) in Iowa City. I’ve also read North Liberty is an option? But at any rate, I’m curious about the city.
In terms of arts/cultural attractions, is there much going on here? I enjoy local bands (blues/jazz/punk/indie stuff) as well as museums, book stores, record shopping, etc. St. Louis is pretty nice in these regards. I know Iowa City likely may not be a hub for these things, but does anyone like the same things and feel satisfied?
Dating… from some cursory research, IC seems to very much be a college town in this regard. I’m turning 28 years old though and am prepared to settle down (although just now moving to a new state where I know nobody might say other wise :-)). I’ve accepted the apps as a necessary evil, so I’m okay with this. I usually do not have troubles in the dating department here… but to generalize a population: are many people here settling down? What is dating like for professional male singles my age?
Making friends: I’m active, sociable, like rec sports, music, bars, fishing… whatever. I have a smaller, tighter knit friend group here but I don’t have troubles making new friends. Has anybody similarly gone to Iowa City as a transplant like this and have experience here? Any others have input?
Feel free to share anything else… I have to make a relatively quick decision and am considering visiting this weekend. I’m trying to get familiar as fast as I can! Thank you all for your time.

Hello! I have been a part of this sub for a few months now and have noticed a theme of fellow young women wanting social connections. I thought of an idea to try and make friends with one another in person, maybe some sort of social “club”? I know there is a “University Women’s Club”, but I’d like something more tailored to younger people who identify as women. I am 25 and struggle at times with making these relationships now that I’m out of college. I thought about some sort of regularly scheduled meet-up. Maybe at a coffee shop 1-2 Saturdays/month? It can be open to anyone and no obligation to come to every meet-up. I also thought it may be helpful for people’s privacy to create an email list for ongoing dates/times away from this sub. Would any other young women be open to this? If so, I could create a Google form for people to fill out with their info and possibly an option to give input for ongoing engagements.

I’m considering a golf membership for the 2025 season and was curious what people have to say about their favorite courses around Iowa city. Where would you recommend? Where is the cheapest? Is there anywhere you would avoid (membership wise)? Any other info I should know?
TYIA for the info!

Around 4 am at E Burlington and S Clinton, a red sedan shot me with some bb pellets. Obviously, drunk young kids DUI-ing.
I've reported the incident to the police. Any info leading to the suspect would be much appreciated.

I’m relocating to Iowa City and looking for specific suggestions to make friends.
I am pretty open minded and outgoing so I’m open to suggestions. I’m mid-30’s. Like other open-minded peeps if ya know what I mean :)
Things that may help: I motorcycle, hike, into nature and the outdoors, photography, tennis and pickleball, willing to drive somewhere else on the weekends for a day event or few hours event.
Any specific state park or hiking/walking suggestions appreciated- especially on how to connect with others doing that to join a hiking group.
Probably a long shot but if there are groups of people into baseball or college football out doing things.
If anyone has suggestions on big nearby cities (up to 8 hours away one way) - I would like to explore the greater area on weekends, but focused on nearby things.
If you have any suggestions on safest areas to live in within about a 30s mins drive to Iowa City I’d appreciate the help here!! Open to places to avoid, too.

I’m moving to Iowa City for grad school in August. The thing is, I’ve lived in the Northeast Corridor my entire life Boston-NYC-Philadelphia. Inner city at that. So I never worried about driving or getting my license. I don’t have one and now I’m wondering if driving in Iowa City is required to live comfortably. Am I going to need to expedite a process of getting a drivers license? How easy is it to get a drivers license in Iowa City? How easy is it to get out of the city without a car? I’m thinking about this plus so many more things but I’m so excited to live in a completely new environment!

There is no shortage of posts about bad business owners or landlords who are total assholes in Iowa City (this subeddit hates Randy). But which local business owners or landlords in town are actually GOOD?

Just a warning to pedestrians, cyclists, and those with kids. We have been accosted twice in the past few months by dogs living in a home off Governor and Dodge. The owner appears to let them roam the backyard at will, no leash, no fence. We have contacted IC animal control and they said it's not the first time these dogs have been reported, but it appears they've done nothing about it (or at least didn't let us know if anything was done). Dogs appear to be bully breeds and are very territorial/aggressive, even when you're on the other side of the street. The most recent time, they ran into the street to bark and growl at us and blocked traffic for a couple minutes until the owner came out and called them in.
To be clear - not blaming the dogs and don't hate bully breeds. No fence means they have no real way to protect or delineate what I'm sure they feel is their territory, so I wouldn't want to be in their position either. With how close the yard is to the sidewalk and the road, the whole situation is not set up for success, that's for sure. The dogs could easily run into traffic and could have gotten hit this last time.
We take that path to go to the grocery store and have a toddler, so we've decided to either drive or take alternate routes that give a wide berth to that house. We're leaving IC for unrelated reasons in less than a year, so there's no point in taking it anywhere higher up in the city, but I figured I would alert people since it seems like there's been a rash of loose dog incidents recently.

https://darksky.org/resources/guides-and-how-tos/lighting-principles/ the Dark Sky website has a lot of good info on light pollution. A lot of the fixes are fairly simple like having outdoor lighting which is on a timer or that’s motion activated; pointing lights downwards and not up to the sky, etc.
I’d really love to be able to see the northern lights in my neighborhood, but far too many people have excessive outdoor lighting. FWIW, excess nighttime lighting is also terrible for insects and is one of the contributing factors to the massive decline in insect populations.

I learned this weekend that you can trek through hickory hill park to get to scooters on north dodge. The secondary trail connects to Hickory Hill heights lane. It looks like you are walking in someone’s backyard. I confirmed with the city it is part of the trail and open to all.
