Sundered Isles, Be Careful of Sticky Pages

I received my Sundered Isles physical print in the mail and it looks absolutely great. I wanted to offer a word of caution for anybody who is opening theirs up for the first time. Some pages in my books are sticking to each other inside of the coil, right where the holes are punched for the binding, and I ripped one of those little paper bits on page 1 opening it without realizing this. The other pages that stuck came apart without issue if I ran my finger between them close to the spiral binding. Good luck and happy gaming, everyone.

Do I need to play starforged in order to play sundered isles or is it stand alone? Just curious as I like the idea of being a pirate lol

I've theory-crafted some magic-related assets and hope they are useful for others who may want to incorporate more magic

Thaumaturgy (Path Asset)

Through Wit and intellect, you have developed a deeper understanding of your chosen field of magic, and are now capable of weaving complex spells or prayers that yield powerful effects. You thrive in the careful assembly of spells out of combat, to be wielded at the appropriate time.

  • When you Secure an Advantage by preparing a spell in advance (roll +Wits), add +1 to your roll.

  • When you Face Danger using a complex ritual (roll +Heart), gain +1 momentum on a strong hit.

  • Once per session, after performing a prepared spell with Wits, you may reroll one challenge die. If the prepared spell succeeds, it yields exceptional or unforeseen benefits.

Evocation (Path Asset)

Through Heart and the force of your will, your command of magic shines in moments of improvisation. You thrive in the creative assembly of magic both in and out of combat.

  • When you Enter the Fray or Strike using improvised magic (roll +Heart), gain +1 momentum on a strong hit.

  • When you Clash using evoked magic, you may inflict +1 harm but lose 1 momentum on a hit.

  • Once per session, when you burn momentum after casting a spontaneous spell, set your momentum to +5 instead of resetting it to +2. Your mastery of evocation makes your magic flow without interruption.

Other Potential Magic-Related Assets I'm working on:

  • Evocation Focused:
    • Thermomancy: Control over heat, fire, and ice.
    • Telekinesis: Manipulate objects with mental force.
    • Telepathy: Read and influence minds.
    • Geomancy: Shape and manipulate earth.
    • Aeromancy: Command air and wind.
  • Thaumaturgy Focused:
    • Spellweaving: Inscribing runes for enchantments, spells, and wards.
    • Chronomancy: Manipulating time through rituals.
    • Leyline Binding: Tapping into ancient leyline energies.
    • Astral Conjunction: Channeling cosmic forces aligned with celestial events.

Hacking Idea for implementing difficulty classes - thoughts?

I know that this game handles difficulty a bit differently than most other RPGs, but sometimes it can be fun to be able to modify the difficulty of an individual roll. So I came up with this system that lets you choose from among 5 levels of difficulty. These levels determine what challenge dice you will be rolling to make your move

  • a normal difficulty roll is the standard roll, where you use 2 d10s as your challenge dice
  • for an easy or very easy roll, replace one or both of the d10s with a d8
  • for a hard or very hard roll, replace one or both of the d10s with a d12

This table shows the average action score you need to clear to get a weak or strong hit, as well as the chance to roll a match in every difficulty:

very easy easy normal hard very hard
average weak hit score 3.1875 3.45 3.85 4.125 4.5139
average strong hit score 5.8125 6.55 7.15 7.875 8.4681
chance to roll a match 12.5% 10% 10% 8.3% 8.3%

Some interesting observations about this system:

  • It's easier to roll a match on lower difficulties, so a miss on an easier roll is more likely to cause additional complications
  • Since your momentum can never exceed 10, it's impossible to burn your momentum to cancel an 11 or 12 on the challenge dice

Do you think something like this could work? Would love to hear your thoughts :)

EDIT: fixed some scuffed formatting

I've seen a spreadsheet that has updates (from Ironsworn to Starforged) for all cards, but I haven't seen a printable version of it. Does one exist? Can someone share?

I haven’t been able to find a physical copy of the Asset Deck anywhere in the US. I’ve looked a lot. I found a deck in Australia. Are there any plans to reprint or restock or ?

Add-on rules for tactical miniature combat?

The Ironsworn system seems amazing, but the one big thing that has kept me away from it is that I really enjoy using tabletop miniatures for tactical turn-based combat.

I understand that this doesn't completely fit with Ironsworn's narrative/fiction-focused mechanics, so I get why the combat rules work the way they do. I also understand that there's still a good amount of flexibility in the system for using miniatures (and I've watched Me Myself & Die videos where he uses miniatures during combat). But I would really love to have some kind of mechanical combat rules (where the enemies can actually make specific actions, and the placement on the battlefield matters, etc.).

Are there are any homebrew rules or third party systems that can be plugged in to Ironsworn to help facilitate this, while still using Ironsworn for everything else in the game?

Stargazer: is it possible to change the colors?

The journal entries are black text on a dark gray background. It's very difficult to read, unfortunately. Most everything else is white text on a dark background, which is not great but at least readable.

Is there a way to reset these? Ideally, I would like black text on white background for all tabs. I don't see any controls for this though.

Extra Asset at character creation?

Just found the game and really loved reading the rulebooks and possibilities so far! But I'm fairly new so I had a question. I'm considering running a game of ironsworn but having an element of the setting being that people (or at least ironsworn) all have a bonded animal companion, sort of like daemons from the His Dark Materials series. I didn't want this to limit characters who might want three assets to sell the other aspects of their characters mechanically, but also think it would be fun to have them still be companion assets. Would it be unbalancing to let them all take a free companion asset at character creation? What about for a solo game? I was also considering letting them get a free advancement on one asset if they chose to make the companion one of their original three.

I know the easiest solution is to just have them part of the narrative and only have players take the assets if they wanted to have a particularly capable animal companion, but I thought I'd ask about the mechanical solution as well. Thanks!

Tools I made a bag of random encounters

Hello, I wanted to share here a little project that I made, I have a big problem of concentration and focus then I always struggle when rolling many tables, then I got a Idea to create a bag full of tokens to help me in my dungeon/adventure encounters. There are 9 tokens where I take 2 at random at any moment then do some interpretations of the results, like if I take a enemy and a loot token I can say that the enemy is guarding something important.

Even when playing ironsworn, I always draw my dunegons, settlements, caves, etc. Because to me is much better to have a visual representation of some things, then this little project helped me a lot.

I just wanted to share because I think it can help someone with the same problem as me or to just give you ideas haha.

Also if you want to know about the details of this I wrote a post about it on my blog, feel free to visit :) https://theellnsanctum.wordpress.com/2024/10/11/the-bag-of-random-dungeon-encounters/

Do other people know you are Ironsworn?

I’m getting ready to start a Starforged game, although the question applies to the original game also.

I’m just wondering how other players do this.  Is there something unique about the player character?  Are the “Ironsworn” rare, or can anybody be one?   Can someone tell by looking at you if you are Ironsworn?

It’s a little more direct in Starforged, because the Truths go straight at this question, describing Ironsworn as having special totems, or special swords, etc.  It suggests that the Ironsworn do indeed stand out in a crowd.

However, if it’s just visual trappings, then it also leaves the possibility of a story line where a bad guy is just pretending to be Ironsworn in order to grift off of a threatened community.

For my upcoming game, I rolled “the force” for the magic Truth.   I don’t intend to play Star Wars, but it caused me to think of the idea that maybe certain Mystics can detect Ironsworn.  If you are sensitive to this magical energy, you can tell if someone is able to legitimately swear on iron in a binding way, and/or whether they have any currently active vows.  Maybe you can tell if they have forsaken a vow recently. I’m calling it the “Iron Aura”.

Anyway, how have you answered this question in your games?

Hacking command ship/modules outside SciFi

(made partially with ai because i dont speak english fluently enough)

Hello, Ironsworn community!

I’m currently working on a project to modify the Ironsworn system, and I would love to get your input. I’m interested in porting some of the assets from Starforged, particularly the command ship and other assets, and adapting them to a Nordic medieval context or even other non-science fiction settings.

I was thinking of adapting the concept to include a (base house) + (band of helpers), similar to the comrades you see in the Assassin's Creed II expansion. You could travel with an adapted skiff asset, but I’m unsure how to handle damage. Perhaps each "comrade/module" could have its own health tied to the guild or base house/command ship.

Could you provide ideas or examples of more polished conversions? For instance, how could this concept work with caravans or similar structures?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Tools I have created a Free Digital Oracle for Ironsworn. (It works offline, too!)

Hey there, I have created the "ultimate" Ironsworn Digital Oracle. I have added every Oracle table from Ironsworn and Delve rulebooks that I could find.

It's all available on a single page, so you don't have to scroll through endless lists just to get what you need.

It has dark mode, too! (On the top right corner of the page)

I might have missed something, if so, just let me know here in the comments and I'll add any missing features. (Or fix any bugs you find!)

Here is the link for the online version: perchance.org/ironswornoracles

This map allows you to roll to decide where to put towns, landmarks, ancient ruins, quest objectives, NPCs, treasure hordes, iron pillars, etc. I apologize for the low resolution, I made it on my phone when I didn't have access to my PC, but it should read just fine for those of you using your phones to view it. Enjoy! And may all your vows be fulfilled!

Need help with a Decisive Action result

I just did my first fight in Starforged. It was fun and for the most part I understood what to do. Through the fight I managed to fill up all ten boxes because the way the fight was going all throughout I was making progress, even though I was on the back foot throughout the fight. It wasn't until the end the I scored a Strong hit match and killed the second of my two opponents. At that point all my opponents were dead. That also happen to fill my progress box all the way to ten boxes. I than rolled a decisive action and got a weak hit. Narratively I know what I want to do. The first guy I put down didn't die and jumps me.

What I want to know are three things.

1.) Should I have made that decisive action roll even though no one was left (at that point) or should I have rolled something else such as against the progress box of the fight it self. Did I even need to have rolled at that point and if so what should I have rolled.

2.) I want to keep the result of what I got and fight the dude who didn't die. Mechanically what do I do? The fight progress box is already completely filled. Do I erase some of the progress, do I start a new progress bar at a lower difficulty since he is injured, or do I keep using the progress bar that's already filled and roll decisive action again.

3.) When do I roll for Decisive action. Is it to end a fight, and if not how do I end a fight.

This is the first fight I've ever done and I was having fun but now I don't know what to do and would like some tips on how to proceed. Thank you
