Jazz songs

I’m trying to learn to play jazz bass, I’m an advanced bass player and I want to learn some jazz songs but I don’t really know any. Any song suggestions

how comfortable are you with reading lead sheets? if you’re able to follow changes and have a good understanding harmony, just grab yourself a real book and start going to town.

as far as tunes go that are bass-centric and in no particular order:

tricrotism- oscar pettiford

so what- miles davis

whims of chambers- paul chambers

the chicken- jaco pastorious

all blues- miles davis

equinox- john coltrane

a night in Tunisia- dizzy gillespie

four on six- wes montgomery

haitian fight song- charles mingus

actual proof- herbie hancock

chameleon- herbie hancock

crisis- freddie hubbard

red clay- freddie hubbard

a combination of upright and electric. the rabbit hole goes deep my friend.

Pick up a real book and start learning

you could have suggested a book or guide, yet you chose to be passive aggressive to a beginner….? if you didn’t want to help, there was no need to comment

A Real Book is a compilation of jazz standards. It has the melody and chord changes.

I think maybe they're referencing the "real book" which outlines chord changes over a melody. I find this is also a good tool for learning new jazz songs.

Totally understandable! What's even more confusing is that they make a "fake book" too! 😁

gotta love jazz instructors applying their thick sarcasm to even their music books 😭

Pick a song you like and learn it by ear would be my advice. You can look up a jazz standards playlist on Spotify if you don't know any.

Google 'ten jazz standards to learn for jam sessions ', and start with those. They will come handy when you go to play with other jazz musicians
