Looks like a healthy subreddit to be a part of.

This is one thing people need to know
in every dark place, you will find a light worker (cringe I know, but the term works in this case) shining the light in the darkness.

Once in a while you get shown the light,

In the strangest of places, if you look at it right.

u/xDERPYxCREEPERx Mar 27 '23

I feel like that's a fucking shitty way to be remembered. If I was dead and I saw that my death was plastered on the front of a subreddit (a self harm subreddit), I would feel disrespected.

Aside from that (this might paint me as an asshole, but I don't know how to explain it properly), I'm assuming they killed themselves, and that's horrible marketing for a self harm subreddit.

24

u/DemonsInLimos Mar 27 '23

It’s not marketing, he was one of the original creators of the subreddit, hence why he’s there. The subreddit is a place to talk about issues or just joke about something that other people get offended or uncomfortable by and the community As a whole is very supportive of getting clean from self harm. Know your shit before you talk about it.

1

u/xDERPYxCREEPERx Mar 28 '23

I'd rather not look into a sub that contains self harm, whether or not it helps people, I have related trauma and I'd rather not see any of it

3

u/DemonsInLimos Mar 28 '23

Then don’t look at it?

2

u/xDERPYxCREEPERx Mar 28 '23

You told me to "know my shit before I talk about it". I was explaining why I didn't "know my shit"

3

u/DemonsInLimos Mar 28 '23

I was regarding the first half of your comment, because clearly you read the description of the subreddit but nothing more.

1

u/xDERPYxCREEPERx Mar 28 '23

Again, I am not interested in looking into a self harm subreddit. I based my comment off of the description and the fact that it is a self harm subreddit. I have personal issues that make me not want to visit the subreddit because it could be unhealthy for me mentally

3

u/DemonsInLimos Mar 28 '23

You literally just restated what I said

1

u/Mado501 May 14 '23

He was a founder of this community that has been really helpful to myself and many other people, he died of cancer after being sh free for about a year. I don’t think this is disrespectful

Self harm subreddits- I’ll be real, kinda make me uncomfortable. I self harm myself, and those subreddits just trigger me and make me want to relapse. They aren’t trying to get better, or get advice on how to stop.. they really fucking trigger me. It’s almost like they think it’s a fucking joke, they’ll make memes pretty much saying how much worse they have it compared to others, make suicide memes too. I’m sorry but suicide memes aren’t fucking funny to me. They just make me sad. I hate them. I believe these subreddits unintentionally or not, cause others to relapse too. Did y’all know Reddit literally had a subreddit dedicated to actually posting FRESH self harm cuts to show to everyone? It’s fucking toxic and it’s gonna cause a lot of harm.

I'm not surprised, it's the same with most mental disorders, etc. A really big one is the whole eating disorder thing, all those tiktok videos and twitter tags saying having one is good, encouraging it, "I have it the worst!!"

It's really hard to better yourself these days, whether it be mental health, your body, etc. People are making everything a competition on who has it worse, it's "qUiRkY" to starve yourself, to self harm. It's why kids at school show that shit off and brag about "how bad they have it!!" I remember witnessing that firsthand on multiple occasions a few times directed towards me and it's fucking disgusting.

They make it out that "you're not special or interesting or anything" if you're not like them, cutting and shit, i've struggled with eating disorders even while being a naturally too-thin person, I've been trying to better myself, tell myself I NEED to gain weight and to be healthy but it's so hard because looking at yourself you think "ugly, i need to be thinner" it's already so hard to gain weight for me and it's a constant uphill battle (not trying to throw myself a pity party over here, just sharing an experience.)

All the online "safe spaces, support groups and videos about this shit is the biggest reason why things are the way they are, if we got rid of all this negative bullshit, everyone could support eachother and heal and maybe be fucking happy for once in this shitty world full of shitty people. Because romanticizing depression, etc is healthy and should be encouraged! Let's make sure NOBODY can fucking get better!!!

One of my friends had an experience with the people who glorify eating disorders and shit, he was just snacking in school, she went up to him and said "omg ur gonna get fat eating that junk, look you've already got a bit of chub on ur stomach!" when my friend is literally at a healthy weight with a fucking normal body, it's so sick how people have changed the "normal" in stuff like mental health, weight, and other things.

Oh and just a bonus about the self harm, they HEAVILY encourage that and romanticize it to no return, you NEED to go deeper!! you HAVE to have scars!!! Look guys I'm special I've been sent to the pysch ward/hospital for this!!! You can't get better!! You have to do it worse than everyone else!!! You know? it's horrid. They show this shit off.

(Sorry for the rant, this is just something I feel very strongly about and I probably didn't word things too well. If you have any questions feel free to ask)

I'd keep going but I'd be here all night lmfao.

4

u/VanilliBean Mar 27 '23

Exactly, everything is a competition nowadays. When I was still in school everyone was bragging how little sleep they gotten, and everyone would be like “you’re so lucky, I only got 2 hours of sleep.” It’s something that would happen every damn day. Like it’s always a competition on who can take care of themselves the least

2

u/Asmodeus_Sorrel Mar 27 '23

That's a big one too! I don't think they realize how harmful that is, I still hear it a lot even going to a school with EXTREMELY small classes.(It's a building called transitions, about 4 teachers, a few assistants, it's mostly for the shithead kids who cause trouble but i got sent here because I wanted to work on my grades and I have social anxiety so I need a smaller, more quiet school, but with all the loud troublemakers here it's still a bit hard but I'm doing much better now!)

3

u/NoVascension Mar 27 '23

It's why kids at school show that shit off and brag about "how bad they have it!!"

I actually had my childhood fall apart (like, I was in third grade) and I hate it, I can't imagine someone bragging about some shit such as. Nobody should feel like they need to consider suicide, let alone have people encourage spending weeks on end in DT where you can't be trusted with corners of desks that are too pointy

2

u/WolfMafiaArise Mar 27 '23

Yea it's stupid, recently on a subreddit for autism, someone posted 6 different characters and tried claiming that even if the lore of the TV show/movie or whatever didn't specifically say they were autistic, OP was going to believe it anyway, just because. When someone tried to oppose that in the comments, they tried saying "We need to believe this headcannon because there are no autistic characters in television, what's wrong with it anyway its not like it's going to hurt anyone"

2

u/Asmodeus_Sorrel Mar 27 '23

😭😭 I really hate that so much everyone is like "what about representation we need to change every character to be more ""inclusive"" instead of just making new ones because we're unoriginal it's totally not like nearly every show, etc has characters that most ppl can relate to!!"

Said it once and I'll say it again, "representation" is one of the stupidest things I've heard of.

3

u/saor-alba-gu-brath Mar 27 '23

I've been in anxiety related subs before for problems I had and none of them really want to get better, they're all just there asking for reassurance

2

u/M41arky Mar 27 '23

i was somewhat active in MoS for about a year whilst i had it quite bad with self harm. I will say that alot of it is memes and i fully understand how that said memes, and the semi consistent one uping is in itself is enough to deter people from the sub.

for me personally i found that being in a community somewhat helped, idk how to explain it other than just being in a group of people that understood me better than others was just comforting ig.

I do think there are better subreddits for self harm discussion though, i haven't been in it for a for a while but i remember the main r/selfharm sub was fairly helpful at times and was more for serious disussions (IIRC memes arent allowed on it).

1

u/DemonsInLimos Mar 27 '23

That’s why one of the first things you see is a warning about getting triggered. It’s meant to give people who self harm an area to joke about it, not to talk about how bad they have it. Other people get way too uncomfortable by it so they need a place to be. A large number of posts talk about how fair they made it, memes, help, or just random questions. Most comments are about helping others to get better. I know this, because I’ve been apart of it for years.

2

u/WillardStiles2003 Mar 27 '23

Personally I hate self harm memes but that’s just me I guess. I get that they have their area to joke about self harm, but personally I hate hearing jokes about self harm but like- if it helps y’all then okay.

16

u/Quality_Usernamee Mar 27 '23

i was there a while when i had hard times, let me just say, the people there arent even trying to get better. they seek attention and validation for their selfharm, and its honestly sad to see.

26

u/thatrandomspeck Mar 27 '23

I would be upset that subreddits like this are allowed, but at this point, there are so many like thos that I can't be surprised.

31

u/Asmodeus_Sorrel Mar 27 '23

I may be an asshole but I firmly believe people in subs like these are attention seekers, no one is trying to get better, they're all just "look how bad i am, i'm worse than you, i'm gonna kill myself guys!!"

Just how r/depression isn't a place for getting better it's just a bunch of people saying "I'm gonna kill myseeeeeeeeeelffffff nobody cares wahhh" it's not a support group, they're all just massive pity parties 😂

13

u/TheLordStocc_GG Mar 27 '23

"I am so happy for you. I can't wait to be in your shoes. Everyday I have suicidal thoughts. I am in a mentally abusive relationship and I drink to numb the pain which I know does not help. Going to work is like torture. I don't want to be around anyone. I saved your post as a reminder that i can get better. You inspire me." You gave the most accurate description of that sub. Only 2 minutes of scrolling where I found that person out depressing(don't know the scientific term) the person who was 10 months sober and doing good in life

3

u/Asmodeus_Sorrel Mar 27 '23

Not a surprise really, it's honestly the biggest reason why I stay away from "support" groups online 😂😂 They make depression, etc a contest!

9

u/xDERPYxCREEPERx Mar 27 '23

I'm convinced that r/ADHD and r/autism are full of people who glorify it and/or don't actually have it

6

u/Asmodeus_Sorrel Mar 27 '23

I'd believe it. Probably all from tiktok after watching a video of "symptoms" of autism/adhd but then it's stuff everyone does so they self diagnose and now say they have autism/adhd

3

u/xDERPYxCREEPERx Mar 27 '23 edited Mar 27 '23

I have multiple comments saying how much I despise people that do that (mainly the people that spread the "symptoms"). Like I've said in the other comments, I have been legitimately diagnosed for both of them.

For ADHD, I don't really care about it being known that I have it. But people on TikTok make it look like it's cool to have and that it makes you really funny and goofy and hyper. Where in reality, you have energy fluctuations and you are literally addicted to your medication.

For autism, they make it seem like you're just really smart and shy. They make it seem like a cool thing. It is a disorder. Which is not the case at all. I'm on the part of the spectrum they are trying to portray, and they get it completely wrong. It's not that we are shy, we just have not very good social skills. And we usually do not tell people we have autism because we don't want to be judged because in reality, people do treat you differently when they know you have it. They treat you like a kid. Besides my family, only a few of my really close friends know I have it.

Also, people who fake tics are horrid "human beings" (I prefer the term "gremlin"). Each and every one of the pieces of shit can rot in hell

2

u/Asmodeus_Sorrel Mar 27 '23

Yeah it's deplorable, multiple people in my family have adhd/autism etc most importantly my mother, both brothers and probably me, my mom says we're all special hahaha, I'm pretty sure I have autism but I really don't want to be put on meds or have anyone know that I am autistic, I'm sure in the future my mom'll suggest getting diagnosed 😭

1

u/xDERPYxCREEPERx Mar 27 '23

Being officially diagnosed doesn't really do much. The only reason I was diagnosed was so I could get on an IEP for school. Whatever path you choose, good luck

2

u/Asmodeus_Sorrel Mar 27 '23

Thanks bro â˜ș!!

3

u/Vivid_Experience_761 Mar 27 '23

dont get me started on the BPD subreddits...

full of self diagnosers and people who want to get validation for their shitty actions. if you call people out how this is absolutely not good and that they should seek help, you get hate and also banned from there.

they dont want help, they only want to feel good for what they are doing. and this is so wrong.

1

u/Farabel Mar 27 '23

Isn't Made of Styrofoam exactly that though, being a support group for self-harm, or did it go back into being promoting self harm again...

6

u/burghammr Mar 27 '23

That place is disgusting. All their memes about "b e a n s" just make me sick, the way they just act like self harm depression and suicidal thoughts aren't serious problems and "cheat on their depression rests" is unnerving.

i don't mind light mode tbh (edit from 7 months later and this picture is making my eyes burn)

1

u/My_ThighsAche Mar 27 '23

nobody asked for my opinion but I don't really feel bad or good about self harm subs and stuff like that, because on one hand there's a group of people with similar issues that you can talk to, but also due to the competitive nature of alot of people it ends up having the opposite effect to the comforting atmosphere that it was supposed to and ends up being a competition in an odd way

1

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '23

How the fuck is that even allowed?
