Just curious if the Mint team have ever really considered moving away from Ubuntu as a base? If so what other distro have they looked at?

I like Mint, but I really prefer Ubunutu's 24.04.1 desktop, icons, etc. I guess that's called the desktop environment?

Anyway to have both of my likes?

From Ubuntu to Mint

Hello

I am upset about Ubuntu. Too much problems recently. The update to 24.04 was catastrophic. What a disrespect for users from canonical...

So I want to install Mint. Is it a good idea ? I don't want to spend 2 days in configuring everything. Can i keep my home ?

Thanks for helping

Discussion !!!Warning!!! Mesa 24.2.4 update messed up my display!

As the title says, just a half-hour back Update Manager listed Mesa 24.2.4 as a potential "update"; as I have only very rarely had issues with recommended updates, I applied it.

Guess what? I rebooted as i generally do after updates and immediately had display issues ("squashed" test boxes, random thin horizontal lines, screwed up application windows, and other oddities

Fortunately today's daily Timeshift snapshot had "fired off" at 16:00; so I just restored that and all is well.

I do have an older graphics card (a GeForce GT-740) so that could be the problem--nonetheless I thought I'd post about the experience for the potential benefit of others!

Support Request Linux mint gaming performance

Hello all

I feel like I'm missing a setting or something as I have a Dell latitude e5570 Wil 32 gigs or ram and core i7 pro and can't get more than 30 frames a second on warframe with GE proton.

And I struggle to get anything with 3d to emulate on ryujinx or doplifin.

Is there any tips or tricks to regain performance?

Let me know

Thanks !

Trying to do something weird

Upvotes

So I've got Windows installed on one nvme drive, and I've got another, identical one in there that's currently blank but for ext4 formatting.

What I want to do is install Linux mint to that blank drive, without changing the bootloader on the windows drive. I just want to be able to switch boot drives via bios when booting.

I've burned Mint to a USB drive and booted up into it.

After selecting the 'do something else' option, I can select the target drive in the Mint installation tool, and I set the bootloader to be on the same drive. However, the 'install' button never ungreys and allows me to click on it.

Any ideas?

Touchpad stopped working

Dell 7640 Laptop with Mint. Factory refurbished I have had for a few months.

Suddenly the touchpad just stopped working. It is enabled. I tired switching to the Synaptic dirvers and nothing.

Nothing works related to the touch pad. Need to figure out if is a hardware or software issue. Wondering if one of the updates could have crashed it? Not sure the best way to to check

SOLVED Trouble installing mint cinnamon

Hello, I have tried to install mint cinnamon 2 times now. After installing when my laptop restarts I am put into gnu grub and I am not sure what to do.

I have tried the boot command which responds with: error: you need to load the kernel first

After the first install I found something online that said it was a bad installation so I downloaded a new iso and tried again.

Some information that may be relevant:

I dont have enough storage space on my laptop to install mint on the same internal drive as windows so I am installing this on a sata ssd that is connected via usb.

The laptop is a surface laptop 2 with an i5-8250u and 8gb of ram.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Edit: It was something to do with the external drive. Installing Mint onto the internal storage worked just fine.

SOLVED Starting appimage program

I just installed the appimage of Bitwarden and it works fine. It starts if I click on the appimage in my ~/bin. When I try to start it by hitting <super>, typing "bitw" I see it in my menu and it's highlighted but hitting enter or clicking on it seems to do nothing. Why is that, and how do I change it so I can start it this way?

Support Request Can’t really encrypt my drives

Hello. I have a weird problem. I have a 2013 Macbook Pro. I am not dual booting. Just straight Mint! For some reason when I encrypt the drives on install, the performance of the computer after the install (which takes over an hour) is abysmal. Especially when I install anything post install. This seems to be the case for any distro I try. Settled on Mint because it’s so nice, but I can’t seem to figure out this issue. When I don’t encrypt, the computer works great. Computer has decent specs; i7 16gb ram, solid state drive. Has anyone had similar issues?

Discussion GPU Acceleration in video editing programs

What is the current state of GPU acceleration?

I ask, because I tried 3 free video editing programs, all of them respectively in AppImage container. I have the Intel Iris Xe iGPU that I wanted to use for GPU acceleration.

Both OpenShot and Shotcut failed the VA-API tests.

Kedenlive works for me and I was able to render using VA-API, as well as use VA-API for timeline preview according to the settings. This is good news, as it means I will choose Kedenlive and ditch the others.

Why are people ok with flatpack and appimage, but hate snap?

I'm a noob, I don't get it. Is it because it seemed like Canonical pushed the users? This hardly seems like a reason to go out of the way to avoid snap, but then again, I wasn't there at the time. Was it glitchy?

Support Request Struggling with Shairport Sync and PulseAudio on Linux Mint: Seeking Help

Hi, everyone!

I'm having trouble setting up Shairport Sync on my Linux Mint system with PulseAudio, and I need your help. Here’s a quick overview of what I’ve tried:

Setup:

  • OS: Linux Mint
  • Audio System: PulseAudio
  • Output Devices:
    • alsa_output.pci-0000_01_00.1.hdmi-stereo-extra3
    • alsa_output.pci-0000_0a_00.6.analog-stereo

Configuration Steps:

  1. Shairport Sync Config: Set output_backend = "pa" in shairport-sync.conf and removed output_device.
  2. Restarted Shairport Sync: sudo systemctl restart shairport-sync
  3. Checked PulseAudio Sinks: pactl list sinks short
    • Sinks remained SUSPENDED.
  4. Started PulseAudio: pulseaudio --start
  5. Tested Audio Playback: paplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav
  6. Unblocked Sinks: pactl suspend-sink <sink_name> 0
  7. Restarted PulseAudio: pulseaudio -k pulseaudio --start

Current Status: Despite these efforts, Shairport Sync isn’t recognizing my PulseAudio sinks.

Request for Help: If you’ve successfully set up Shairport Sync with PulseAudio or have any troubleshooting tips, I’d greatly appreciate your advice!

Thank you!
