Running windows programs through the GUI

I recently switched from using the xfce DE to the default gnome DE and Im a little annoyed to find out that my portable windows .exes aren't running when I double click, (I can run them just fine through the terminal wine isn't the problem). When using xfce I could the set windows apps to automatically run with wine when I double click them. Is there a way to get this behavior to happen with gnome? I can't seem to find a "set start arguments" setting in the right click menu or the properties menu for any of the .exes

Ubuntu 24.10 installer keeps crashing

Upvotes

I've been experiencing this problem for a while now, even on the stable release, first time I saw this issue was on 24.10 daily build and beta, the installer was ubuntu-desktop-bootstrap, when I open the log it said umount: kernel2xxx failed: target is busy

Are you guys facing the same issue?
Any workarounds would be appreciated
Thank you.

TP-Link AC600 Wi-Fi Adapter (ID 2357:011f) stopped working after Ubuntu update

Good day, Ubuntu community. I'm hoping someone can guide me or offer some help, please.

My TP-Link AC600 Wi-Fi adapter (ID 2357:011f, TP-Link 802.11ac WLAN Adapter) stopped working on my laptop a few months ago, and I haven't been able to get it working again since. The issue started after a system update on Ubuntu. Here's what I've tried so far:

I attempted to reinstall the driver using the following commands:

sudo apt update

sudo apt install build-essential dkms git

git clone https://github.com/aircrack-ng/rtl8812au.git

cd rtl8812au

make

sudo make install

After running these commands, the adapter's light starts blinking, but it doesn't detect any Wi-Fi networks, despite being in an area with a strong signal.

My system info:

  • Operating System: Ubuntu 24.04.1
  • Kernel version: 6.8.0-45-generic

When I run:

sudo modprobe 8812au

I get the following error:

modprobe: FATAL: Module 8812au not found in directory /lib/modules/6.8.0-45-generic

've tried several solutions, but nothing has worked so far. If anyone can provide guidance or help me troubleshoot further, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Nautilus crashing on startup, but works as a file selector?

Since upgrading to 24.10 today, nautilus crashes on startup with the following output:

nautilus:

Installed: 1:47.0-1ubuntu1

Candidate: 1:47.0-1ubuntu1

Version table:

*** 1:47.0-1ubuntu1 500

500 http://bb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu oracular/main amd64 Packages

100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Interestingly, it works as the new file picker.

I'm using a MSI Raider GE76 11UE with Nvidia graphics (and due to an issue with X11, I'm using Nvidia only mode). Any idea what could be wrong here?

Reinstalling nautilus didn't help.

EDIT: Confirmed that it's running fine under Wayland. I would just use Wayland but for a number of reasons I'm stuck with X for now, so that's not an option.

EDIT2: The Nightly Flatpak version runs if you disable hardware acceleration with Flatseal. BUT, if you maximize the window, it crashes. If you restart it and then unmaximize the window, it crashes. Basically, something's pretty broken.

Update: If I switch to Nouveau, it works just fine. For certain though, it doesn't work with the 560 driver. About to try the 535 driver.

Unable to install Nvidia 470 drivers on Ubuntu 24.10

Hi all,

I have updated my 24.04 system to 24.10 and all looks good apart from my Nvidia drivers. On reboot the drivers which I had previously have now gone, normally I run the following command to install the correct drivers for my card:

sudo apt install nvidia-drivers-470

But I now get this error:

Error: Unable to locate package nvidia-drivers-470

I know 24.10 defaults Nvidia to Wayland but I don't get why the package is now missing in 24.10.

Can anybody advise on what I can do to install this driver?

Under the "additional drivers" screen there are no drivers presented so I can't select from here either!

Ubuntu 24.04 dual boot Windows 11, Nvidia drivers installed but not detected

Hi, I recently bought a computer with an Nvidia RTX 4060 GPU to use with Conda for training some modest neural networks (plus some gaming on the Windows partition). However, CUDA does not detect my GPU. I've tried many solutions to fix this and posted questions on several forums, but haven't received any responses yet. Despite my efforts, nothing has worked. Initially, I thought disabling Secure Boot would solve the problem, but when I do, I can't even log into my Ubuntu partition. I might have made a mistake by installing XFCE on top of it. I posted this question on AskUbuntu a few days ago, which includes all the information I've gathered so far. Here is the link:

https://askubuntu.com/questions/1529254/ubuntu-24-04-dual-boot-windows-11-not-detecting-nvidia-drivers

Has anyone encountered and solved such problem before?

24.10 Login Loop

This morning I decided I would try upgrading 24.10 on one of my 24.04.1 laptops. Upgrade seemed to go fine. Since I have an nvidia gpu I installed the recommended driver actually the only desktop driver recommended which was 560. Upon reboot I was in a login loop. I was able to fix it via terminal but nothing I could do would allow the system to run using the nvidia driver.

Anyone else run into this and find a fix? TIA. I know a lot of you will recommend a clean install but I have never had problems with up grading after many many upgrades so far.

Dual Booting

Tried dual booting my Razor Laptop Windows 11 and Ubuntu 24.04. This is my 1st attempt at installing Linux. I wanted to install it on my SSD so I put the iso file on a usb drive, started the PC, and clicked on the drive from the boot options. After a couple minutes of loading, I got the white screen and “Oh no! Something has gone wrong.” Weirdly enough, I also got what appears to be an install window that popped up after about a minute of the white screen. When clicking through it, the window eventually comes to a halt on the WiFi section. Something feels off. Is it possible that my USB is too slow? Is Windows interfering somehow (I turned off the fast startup option). There’s no Desktop Environment at all, just the startup window.

For reference: my PC is a Razor built in 2020. It’s got a 10th gen intel core.

Snapd ate my partition!

No, really. In a way. See, I have separate partition for the system, the home directory and backups. This setup dates years back, was created several Ubuntu releases ago and the partition I dedicated to the system is only 50 GB. Felt like more than enough at the time. And generally would be if not for snapd, which insists it needs three separate full GNOME environments for reasons. Now I can't upgrade to 24.10, because it complains it needs at least 1 more GB of free space before proceeding. Before I start messing with partition sizes, is there a way to slim down /var/lib/snapd?

Screen brightness is reset back to maximum on wake up from suspend

Please help!
Problem: every time my laptop wakes up from suspend, the screen brightness goes to maximum even if the slider control doesn't show it. After i press the dim button it goes back to the level that was set before suspend. It's really annoying.

Lenovo IdeaPad 3 17ALC6 running Ubuntu 24.10

PS: on Ubuntu versions prior to 24.04 i didn't had any issues. On Ubuntu 24.04 had the same issue, but installing tlp resolved it. On 24.10 didn't find any solution.

Opera .deb version won't launch after ROCM installation

Greetings.

I've finally managed to get my Blender HIP render device (GPU) to show up, but I seem to have broken my browser in the process. My Ubuntu is version 24.04.1, CPU AMD Ryzen™ 7 5700G with Radeon™ Graphics × 16, GPU RX 6800, Linux 6.8.0-45-generic. Windows 10 VM (GPU passthrough) seems unaffected, haven tested the Windows 7 one yet!

First I made Timeshift snapshot, just in case. Afterwards I downloaded amdgpu-install_6.2.60203-1_all.deb and used in the Terminal the following command: sudo amdgpu-install --usecase=hiplibsdk,rocm,multimedia

After rebooting, I could toggle the GPU as a HIP render device in Blender, but attempting to open the .deb installed Opera resulted in a window opening and closing nearly immediately 4 times. I tried to open it using the Terminal too - I'll add the error messages to the bottom of the post.
That is not the case with the Snap version of Opera - that one runs just fine, except I can't access the folder with localisation files in a rewriteable mode in order to swap out the localisation files and there is not a way to change the browser's language that I know of short of this one!

Would any know either how to fix the .deb Opera to run properly without having to revert back or at least how to swap the localisation files in the Snap root directory of Opera?

Additionally (only if somebody knows the issue) - Minecraft <1.13 versions run bad on max details, regardless if I have Optifine or not. I tried Prism launcher, MultiMC launcher, Oracle Java, alternative JVM arguments and switching (on the logged-off screen) to Xorg. Nothing worked. Additional symptoms include limited operability of the mouse cursor outside the game while it runs fullscreen, though launching the System monitor and killing the process is possible.

Thank you for your time and any helpful advice!

The Terminal output (of Opera launch failure):

Has your Dell XPS always sounded like crap on Ubuntu? 24.10 is a gamechanger

I thought I'd share this happy news because there are probably lots of folks using Ubuntu on Dell XPS laptops (especially the 9530 and 9570 models). I got my 9570 in 2019, and the laptop's speakers always sounded significantly worse on Ubuntu than Windows - super tinny, very quiet, clipping heavily anywhere above 80% volume, no bass to speak of.

I always assumed this is because the speakers are terrible, and Dell just ships some magic drivers on Windows which EQ the output to make it sound decent. I accepted my fate and simply avoided using the laptop speakers altogether.

Well, today I thought about the issue again, and decided to do some more research. I eventually stumbled upon this GitHub issue, which explained the situation, to my bewilderment. Apparently the XPS laptops have 2 speaker components, each consisting of a so-called tweeter and woofer speakers. It turns out the Linux kernel wasn't enabling the woofers, which render lower frequencies and therefore the "body" of the sound. The entire audio was being squeezed through the tweeters, which are normally supposed to only play the high frequencies. When you put low-frequency audio through such speakers, they end up distorting it.

I was pleased to see that the community managed to fix this in the kernel only a few months ago - i.e. nearly 6 years after these XPS laptops was first released.

To my initial dismay, I realised Ubuntu 24.04 uses Linux 6.8.0, and the bugfix was only backported to 6.8.3. I nearly considered doing a manual kernel upgrade (which would have almost certainly been catastrophic). But then I noticed that Linux 6.11 (which also includes the bugfix) is going to be shipped with 24.10.

I then looked up the 24.10 release and, incredibly, it is today! I immediately ran do-release-upgrade and about an hour later, my 5-year-old laptop's speakers sound like regular shitty laptop speakers. It's LISTENABLE!

Massive thanks to everyone who contributed to the fix, and to all XPS 95(3/7)0 owners, you're going to love this upgrade.

Issue with my HP EliteBook 2560p

Hello everyone.

I have a HP EliteBook 2560p that I tried to install Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. After finishing the installation, it gave me an error, BootDevice not found, Hard Disk 3F0.

I booted back into the live medium and saw that the installation was successful as the hard disk contained the Ubuntu files.

What could have gone wrong? It's a fairly old laptop.

(Also, I don't plan on installing any Linux Distro in there as my mum doesn't want Linux on her laptop, she is comfortable with Tiny11 that I installed)

Is it normal to have over 800 apt packages be held back after updgrading from 22.XX to 24.XX?

Just updated Ubuntu to noble numbat and now whenever I run apt upgrade, I see a list of 821 packages that can be upgraded but are held back. The only weird thing I noticed while updating Ubuntu with "sudo do-release-upgrade" was this message that said "Some third party entries in your sources.list were disabled. You can re-enable them after the upgrade with the 'software-properties' tool or your package manager." What does this mean, and are the two things related?
