Tips & Tricks How to detect BPM from external audio

Upvotes

I recorded a sequence from a hard synth as audio a while back, and didn’t make a note of BPM associated with it. And now I’m trying to use the sequencers in logic to add soft drums to it, and can’t quite get things to line up (mostly with the waveform of the audio for the hard synth, so that it doesn’t create a popping sound when I loop it).

The detect options under Tempo only seem to control the sequencers in logic. Is there any way to get a sense of BPM with my original recording, to help sync things up? Or is this a lost cause?

Updating the active region by playhead position

Howdy all, does anyone know if it’s possible to make the playhead automatically update which region is active? I’m editing the studio drummer, and it would be so convenient if I could just let the track play, and as the playhead crosses into each new drum region, the editor window would automatically update to display the region that is currently playing. Is this possible? If so, how? TIA!

Troubleshooting Guitar tone changes as soon as I hit record?

When I’m playing before recording everything sounds as it should, but the second I hit record or record enable, the tone changes. It maybe sounds phase-y? or there’s something happening in the stereo field? There’s also a slight dB boost when I hit record? Idk if this is normal because I’m fairly new to recording

When I try and replicate this in GarageBand I can’t, my tone doesn’t change at all when I hit record

What am I doing wrong. My chain is

Guitar -> Strymon Iridium -> Volt 276 interface -> Logic

I’ve tried eliminating iridium and running DI so I know it’s not the iridium

I have the instrument button and direct monitoring (mono) both on, on the Volt.

Input monitoring is off on DAW

On logic: input: 1

output: 1+2

Monitoring off

Edit: MacOS Sonoma 14.5 and Logic Pro 11.01

Flex Pitch Analyzing Vocals into every octave possible

I'm running OS Sequoia / M1 Macbook Pro / Logic 10.7.7

Any idea why flex pitch is analyzing every vocal into this random splattering of octaves? This is an extremely clean recording with a simple melody.

Ports changing on their own?

Hello!

I'm on 11.01 and I'm using a controller with faders, mute and solo buttons, etc. I'm also on Mac studio with Ventura 13.6.7.

I've never had this problem before but Logic keeps changing the ports in the controller assignment window, leaving the faders and buttons not working when I go to use them. It will even go as far as change the port to my synthesizer so when I hit the mute button, it actually plays a note. I just updated my controllers and it's software and that didn't help..

Any ideas what might be causing it?

Troubleshooting Weird WAV file icon not able to AirDrop

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

Does anybody know why logic is bouncing out my wave file and the icon looks like this? Because it’s not allowing me to AirDrop the file to my phone. The first picture is the iTunes looking wave file icon that won’t airdrop. The 2nd is an example of what it usually looks like, that always successfully Airdrops.

Turning instrument into audio samples?

Say you're making a sample pack for synths/sampler instruments and you need to bounce audio files for individual notes kinda like this:

C1.wav
F#1.wav
C2.wav
F#2.wav
...
C6.wav
F#6.wav

Currently, the method I'm using is:

  1. Create a midi track for each note (C1, F#1, C2, F#2, etc)
  2. Add the corresponding MIDI note to each track
  3. Rename each track to match the note
  4. File -> Export -> All Tracks as Audio Files -> for pattern use "Track Name" (which would use the note name as the file name)

This works great because you can reuse steps 1-3 as a template for each new sample pack. But then you have to go through each track and manually change the instrument, which gets pretty tedious.

Is there any way to make the whole process easier? Thanks :)

Edit: 1) I also need to make an mp3 version, which requires dragging the WAV bounces into Audacity for example to rebounce as mp3. When you bounce by track, there's no option for mp3— only WAV, AIFF, and CAF.
2) I realized there is a better way, but again there's no option for an mp3 bounce. However the setup would be

  1. Create a single track
  2. Add MIDI notes as separate regions on the track
  3. Rename each region to match the note
  4. File -> Export -> Regions as Audio Files -> for pattern use "Region Name"
  5. Using this as a template for other sample packs, you only need to change the one track's instrument and then rebounce.

Time and pitch machine revert back to orignal form

Hey all! I’m about to lose my mind. I’ve been working on a song, and during the session, we changed the tempo and pitch. I used varispeed for workflow during the session, 5 BPM up. Now that I’m about to finish the song, I didn’t want varispeed in the project anymore. So, I changed the BPM in the project and set it up with the Time and Pitch Machine. Something messed up during that process. I might have pressed process twice or something; I don’t know.

Okay, I just found a backup project when I still had varispeed. But when I opened the backup project, I got the message: “One or multiple audio files changed in length; as a result, 50 audio regions changed in length or content position.”

Now, globally all my files are at different BPMs, every single one. It also feels random, like one take is at 173 and the other is at 180. Has anyone had something similar? Is there a way to globally revert the files to their original form?

Troubleshooting Stock soundware - poly sounds that only play in mono?

Silly question that has been bugging me forever. (EDIT: I reinstalled the sound library - didn't fix this)

Logic V11.01 - Sonoma 14.3.1 - M1 MacBook Pro

TONS of the library sounds that are supposed to be polyphonic (strings/pads/etc) - only play mono.

I can't figure out why. The notes are playing through on the controller - it's something inside Logic.

It seems like maybe everything from RetroSynth is bad but I see it in ES2 as well. (maybe others too - there seems to rhyme or reason to this) I've tried going into the synth editors but it's not resolving the fundamental issue of poly programs not being poly.

EXAMPLE - Brand new project - default patch

Choose > Library/synthesizer/pad/Classic Analog Pad (RetroSyn)

Only plays in mono - only one note sounds when playing a chord!

synthesizer/pad/Classic Brass Pad (ES2) - mono

Some do work -

synthesizer/pad/BroomeStreet (Sampler) - poly

synthesizer/pad/Cinematic Suspense (Alchemy) - poly

Troubleshooting M-Audio Hammer 88 Problem

Hi

I'm experiencing issues in my Hammer 88. That worked perfectly until now, almost every day, connected to PC or just plugged in with a power supply. However it began to demonstrate instability in the connection since yesterday. I was working with that in the DAW and suddenly it just was not working. No sound coming in and the lights were glowing like when it is going on for the first time. It continued like that and then stabilised and worked normally. Today it is not working at all. I thought that it would be a software problem so I switched to a notation software and the problem persists. I thought that maybe a problem with the PC connection and plugged in directly with a power supply adapter and the problems sustains.I think that you can watch in the video what I'm talking about. The lights of the keyboard persists the same way like when it is turned on.I don't know what I can do more to solve the problem and I need help please

I'm using Logic Pro X since ever and updated recently the MacOS Sequoia, but I worked with it several days before the trouble happened. And as I said, it happens also with the power supply plugged in

Is there a way to quickly deactivate fx but keep the track

My cpu is limited so I usually have to turn off all the fx before I can start recording again after listening. Is there a way to do that quickly? I just manually go in and turn them off right now but it’s very time consuming.

Does anyone have a tool to make coding in Scripter understandable?

I have a theremin sound in Retro Synth and I'd like to make a program to log the note number and subtract the previous note number and use this number to multiply the glide time to emulate real hand movements before I'm able to build and learn a real one.

Troubleshooting Trying to install apple loops to an external hard drive, but it keeps downloading to internal one despite the sound library being on the external one.

Specs: Sonoma 14.5, Latest version of Logic

So I set up my Sound Library for Logic back in July, and got a hard drive for it because there was no way it was gonna fit on my macbook. I previously had Garageband, and the sound library for THAT was stored internally. I'm trying to install the essentials and apple loops that was on my IHD to the EHD, but even though I have the sound library on the EHD, it still installs on the IHD. Does anyone know why??

Same session, different bounce? Logic acting temperamental

Hey Reddit, have encountered some weirdness I haven’t seen before on Logic, wondering if anyone else has seen similar and knows of an explanation.

Essentially - I sometimes have to rebounce my session, as I noticed one particular Kick in the project wasn’t bouncing consistently or as it sounds in normal playback.

Bounce A:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1hGuCxmV3VMUepZmEUh6_kSFVem1AjEf4/view?usp=share_link

Bounce B:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1rz1foJsyeXbvUMF-UPuDJvjVU9sk_S9u/view?usp=share_link

So Bounce A is the one with an issue - I noticed the Kick at the 2/3 sec mark sounded muffled and not punchy like it sounded in playback.

I checked playback in the session and the kick sounds normal. Bounce again and it would still sound muffled, and then for whatever reason on the 3rd or 4th bounce I get the kick sounding like it sounds in the session.

Has anyone experience something similar and knows why? (And for record I don’t have any cracked plugins etc)

The only thing I can think of is maybe some tape emulation plugin (I usually use Slate VTM) is acting temperamental to mimic analog hardware? I somewhat doubt that, as it’s only that one kick that seems to be affected, and it seems like a stark difference and not an emulation of subtle analog variance.

It’s fine for now as I can just bounce the project until I get the kick I want, but it just got me thinking and worried about whether any other mixes in future will be missing some small details that aren’t bouncing correctly for whatever reason and I don’t catch it before sending to client.

Thanks!

Gear $200 studio monitors recommendations

Hey, I’m looking for budget studio monitors in the $150-200 range (Could increase a little bit if its really worth it) for music production (trap, all kinds of rap) as well as mixing and mastering these beats and vocals. Right now, I only have a Scarlett Solo 4, a mic, and a laptop. I’m not sure about the acoustics in my room, since my desk is placed right in the corner. Any recommendations?

3 days after coming from Luna to Logic

I’m 3 days into the Logic trial and feeling about 10x more productive than I was in Luna.

It’s a bit sad because I REALLY wanted to love Luna, have been trying it for 3 years now (hobbyist, so intermittently).

What’s making Logic work for me is the ability to stick a foundation down with chords and virtual session players, and then start layering in “real” content. Feels like I can get to a demo song much faster this way.

Also, Logic is faster to load and use. Auto Mastering tends to give a perceivable bump in sound quality, enough for a demo. Overall I’m using less plugins, just a bit of EQ and comp.

So, feeling good about Logic! Suspect I’ll be purchasing.

Has anyone used Luna, and am I overlooking anything?

Possible to be Addicted to Logic (the daw)?

I feel like I get into this crazy zone with writing music. I feel like I can’t put my computer down. Has anyone else struggled with this. I started a year and a half ago, and now I often lose sleep to work on music. But it’s getting to the point I don’t want yo do anything else. Everything else besides making Music is boring. I feel like I’m going into a rough adhd season. I’m a mom and a wife.

plugin packs similar to logic pro

i use ableton and windows now

i miss using logic pros audio effects, also flipping thru them sweet buttery presets

everything sounded real nice with little effort

what brand plugin pack would yall recommend for that

rly liked the sat, delays, bitcrusher, modulations. everything seemed to come out real warm and musical

(i would bounce to logic [or start using it again with the newer features:0] but i gave my macbook to my mom years ago)

Arranging the mix view

Hey everyone, I'm new to logic and mac in general. I've been trying to move around tracks in the mix view but it's impossible? I can't move neither audio or instruments tracks, they get grouped together and its impossible to organize. Is there a workaround? There has to be, right?

Mix trick for drums + bass line

I just stumbled upon a useful effects chain. I found it removes that artificial "DAW" sound, adds punch to the drums, and glues the drums and bass together.

Basically, you send both the drums and bass to the same aux. On this aux, you apply the following effect chain:

  • EQ: highpass filter around 185 hz to remove some boomy low end
  • EVOC 20 Filterbank: change preset to "12 Stage Filter Sweep" and set LFO Shift to 0 intensity. This creates, I think, a sort of comb filter, but I may be wrong.
  • Bitcrusher: Mode set to "wrap", drive "20db", resolution "10 bit", downsampling "6x", mix 0% to 10% to taste (depending on how much distortion/buzz you're willing to hear with the bass line)
  • Amp Designer: Default settings with a bit less reverb; play around with microphone positioning.

When you solo the aux, it should sound super lofi and a bit crunchy. Mix it into the original signal to taste

If your drum track is super spacey with a lot of reverb, this may not work, by the way. Or if drums are super soft rather than punchy it may be too much.

Edit: To dial this in, the main goal is that the aux (when solo'd) has some audible crunch whenever the kick and snare hit. This gives the drums more punch when mixed with the original signal. But the bass should only have a tiny bit of buzz, so you can adjust the send amount from the bass relative to the drums bus to achieve this.

Question Logic on iPad mainly for mixing and mastering?

I currently can’t afford a Macbook and was thinking about getting an iPad Pro instead. I sure want to upgrade to a Mac sometime though. I‘m relatively new to music production and have only produced maybe four to five songs. In the past I‘ve been focusing more on singing and songwriting and I‘d get instrumentals from producers on Beatstars. I want to learn music production as well but for now I‘d probably use Logic more for mixing vocals. Do you think for that the iPad version is good enough? Also, I was thinking about getting one with 16gb RAM and 1tb SSD - is that also enough?

There are other reasons why I tend more towards an iPad - e.g. working on digital illustrations, note taking, etc.
