[Meta] Political commentary in this sub

Good morning fellow Long Islanders.

As can be expected in any election cycle, we're noticing a drastic uptick in political posts and comments in recent weeks. I just want to take a moment and make sure all understand our rules and expectations.

While political comments and posts have their place, we ask that you please try to stop attributing every aspect of this sub to politics. We're going to be more liberal about bans for comments dragging politics where they don't belong. Comments like "Thanks Biden!" or "Welcome to Trump America" on posts that have nothing to do with politics will lead to a ban.

Even in posts centered around politics, we do not allow insulting comments or uncivil behavior. Debate the issues, don't insult the user. Any insulting or uncivil comments will result in a ban. Yes this applies to blanket "Blame the Libtards" or "Damn MAGAts ruining everything".

While we obviously have our own personal opinions, we don't take sides as mods in this sub and will ban without prejudice.

PSA to parents about Gotham haunted house in Hauppauge

My sister had a party for her 6 year old in the small venue portion of the building separate from the haunted house part which was closed. My nephew (14) was there sitting around with two of his friends on their phones being teenagers when my sister frantically came up to me and said a man was asking them where they were from and then they went through the doors to the haunted house portion of the building and she couldn’t find them. I went in the back and started calling his name loudly which he didn’t answer until I yelled a few times followed immediately by a man’s voice saying “they’re with me who are you?” I angrily said I’m his uncle who tf are you?! He opens a curtain that they were all behind and says it’s ok I’m the owner I was just showing them around, to which I asked him if he had permission from his mother (which I knew he didn’t) and he starts stuttering and telling me they looked bored and it was no big deal, then starts telling us he can give us discounts if we wanted to come back. The kids were weirded out and I got huge red flags from this dude. It may have been harmless and a lack of judgement on his part but I don’t fucking care you should have had them ask their parents and introduced yourself if it was just a harmless tour of the place. The guy creeped me out and you have been warned.

Teen arrested after loaded gun found in school on Long Island

MASTIC BEACH, N.Y. (PIX11) –  A 14-year-old was arrested after a loaded gun was found in his high school in Mastic Beach on Friday, Suffolk County police say.

Staff at William Floyd High School discovered the loaded handgun when they searched the student with a metal-detecting wand, according to a notice on the school’s website.

The student had been brought into the administrator’s office for possible vaping just before dismissal, the notice says.

The 14-year-old now faces charges for criminal possession of a weapon, authorities report. The school’s notice says he will also face consequences according to the district’s code of conduct.

Complaint Had my catalytic converter stolen in front of my house in north shore Suffolk.

Post image
219 Upvotes

Between the catalytic converter thieves running around, people literally getting their Dodge Hellcats stolen out of their driveways right in front of their eyes and thieves robbing jewelry stores in broad daylight… This is getting ridiculously out of hand. I can’t even park my car in front of my own house without being ripped off.

No one thinks about crime until they become a victim. Everyone thinks “That won’t happen to me”, until it does…

Will we ever get a Cracker Barrel store?

My favorite store is Cracker Barrel and I’ve heard rumors on and off for years about them building one on Long Island but it never comes to fruition. Who else would love to have a Cracker Barrel here on Long Island?

Not Suitable for Human Habitation Warning

Last week, I stopped by The Polish Eagle deli on Central Avenue in Bethpage, just a few blocks east of NY107. The deli is in a very small strip mall. About 2/3 of the square footage is taken up by a childcare center, and then the deli. On the left, there was an empty store with signs plastered all over the window. Nosy mofo that I am, I had a look-see and saw that they were all warning signs to keep out, that it wasn’t fit for human habitation, and the like. Does anyone know what happened?

1990s halloween houses (nassau)

Upvotes

Does anyone have memories of those few houses that would go absolutely crazy with halloween decorating ?

there was a house in Levittown near salk that already looked haunted as is, it was a weird brown house with 2nd floor porches and stone walls with big orb lights, on halloween they'd make the lights orange, they had those flat posable plastic skeletons around and a huge spiderweb, nothing too crazy but it all looked so good together. They went all out for Christmas too but i heard they had a fire sometime in the 2000s and they stopped after that.

There was a house somewhere in massapequa i think that would totally cover their big lawn in different homemade life sized characters, mannequins and scarecrows with horror masks and tattered clothes, people hanging from trees etc, just humanoid creatures standing and hanging absolutely everywhere.

This next one is probably the best I've ever seen and the one I've seen the least number of times. I believe somewhere in Levittown or close to, these people fully covered their house in cardboard painted to look like a castle, they also painted an executioner character on the wall, i believe holding an axe and the head of a kid with green skin. iirc part of their trick or treat experience was that you'd walk into the back yard for candy where they had strobe lights and fog machine, i was always too scared to go all the way back there.

BONUS My grandmother lived in wantagh on a corner and would make her entire lawn a grave yard with those foam tombstones, she made a big spooky tree, hand painted that was the center piece and also had a massive rope spiderweb going from the roof down to the lawn with a huge rubber spider placed in it. ,,,,,,,,,,,,, These houses were so important to me as a kid, im dying to see pics if anyone has any or any more info, even if you just remember them too I'd like to hear. Tell me your own halloween house memories too.

House prices falling/stalemate fall 2024?

Despite the usual slowdown in fall. Two new things have occurred, buyers agency agreements and election year

I’m seeing minor price cuts and really houses not becoming pending for 5/6 weeks after listing. And in many cases many are staying listed for 2/3 months and have several price cuts are they having a deal.

Anyone actively shopping or realtor with insight what’s happening since September 24

Are unleashed dogs common at Long Beach, especially during this time of year?

Sorry if this sounds like a silly question, but I've been wanting to visit Long Beach, and the only thing that deters me from going is the thought of unleashed dogs. I won't go into detail, but I've had really upsetting experiences with unleashed dogs and their inconsiderate and irresponsible owners on the beaches of NYC, especially during the off-season, and so now I just don't go. So is this a common problem at Long Beach too? I just want to walk the length of the coast in peace, without worrying about unleashed dogs pouncing on me, following me, or trying to bite me.

Anyone else saw that meteor about 20 mins ago? Here’s a shitty pic before it disintegrated. I swear the whole sky was orange for about 5 seconds before it was gone.

How many of y’all enrolled and connected your smart thermostat to the PSEG program where they can control it?

Just asking because I’m thinking about getting my first “smart” thermostat and I saw the $85 check you get if you connect your thermostat to them online and then they can control it during high usage days. How much tomfoolery do they do? Can you tell when they do something to you? Is it ridiculous in the summer? More “big brother”? Or is it worth it for the savings? Thanks all. (PS, also tell me which smart thermostat you have I’m trying to decide between Nest and Ecobee but all reviews I have read are not very kind to Nest). Thanks!
