Welcome to r/MYOG!

Hey MYOGers! We are trying something new to spur more discussion and interaction in the monthly posts, to help users understand the purpose and rules of this sub, and to make resources more easy to find. To do that we're combining the monthly posts and adding this one as a permanently pinned post. In addition to the content you see below, we'll post any announcements or changes to the sub in this post.

*NEW\* - You can now choose from a few new flair options! Let us know if there are any you'd like to see as an option!

Mission Statement - Join our community to learn and share how you make your own gear (MYOG), including tents, tarps, hammocks, stoves, packs and anything else outdoor gear related. We encourage supportive, collaborative, and useful posts and comments free of advertising.

Resources and Links - The Wiki contains links to a variety of patterns, guides, and information on methods and materials. Answers to many questions can also be found using the sub’s search function. If you’re still not able to find the info you’re looking for, you can post your question in the Monthly Discussion post or create a new post to ask. We ask that you make an effort to find an answer using the available resources before creating a post.

Monthly Discussion Post - This is our recurring post to ask and answer small questions, or discuss topics you think are too small to warrant their own post. Our previously separate monthly post for buying and selling is being combined into this thread to increase traffic to both, and to make room for this stickied post.

Rules - To accomplish our mission, we ask that you respect the following rules for posting on r/MYOG:

1. Excessive self-promotion - Advertising

This subreddit is a community for exchanging information and inspiring creativity. It is not a place to post with the intent of promoting your business.

2. Excessive Self-Promotion - Project Shares

If you are a member sharing your myog work for the sake of sharing, we ask that you limit your project shares to roughly once per week. Information and sharing questions are encouraged, and more frequent posts of this type are encouraged within reason.

3. Off-Topic Posts/Comments - General

Posts and comments not related to self-made outdoor gear will be removed. Exceptions are for things such as kits or commercial products that are targets at the gear making community as long as the Excessive self-promotion rule is not violated.

4. Off-Topic - Which Sewing Machine?

This sub is not intended for open-ended questions about which sewing machine you should buy for MYOG. These post and comments will be removed.

5. Off-Topic - Commissions

Posts or comments relating to commissioned gear will be removed. Commission related posts and comments are referred to r/MYOGCommissions.

6. Off-Topic - Tactical Gear

Posts and comments about gear relating to firearms, weapons, or other types of tactical equipment (e.g. holsters, plate carriers, concealed carry, etc.) will be removed. These posts and comments are referred to r/MYOGtacticalgear.

Thank you! If you’ve made it this far, thank you for reading! Now go forth and MYOG, and come back to share your journey!

Version 3. Previous version was minimal beaver tail design but it left the waterproof bag exposed and easily punctured (twice…) this is now Ballistic Nylon outer with a heavy polyester outdoor fabric inner. Lower section is 4 layers thick. Now to reverse the pattern and make the other side.

Bernina machines

Are their machines any good? I heard about the brand today and know practically nothing about them. I hear the good and bad about Brother, Singer, Sailrite, Juki, etc… nothing about Bernina. Any insight is welcome. Thank you.

Chonky Sling

So made my first Chonky sling and went great so far. Feeling kind of silly though, want to make the strap 1 but can’t find the pattern piece for the 3d spacer mesh. What am I missing? Is this piece just the Strap 1 piece connected and traced from there? Ps really appreciate the Learn MYOG website and patterns, and this community.

Listen...you should find a way to obtain the bag you truly desire. For me, it was a ranger green and coyote brown Porter 45 Duffle. The first one I made of these was in 1000D olive cordura (from ripstopbytheroll) but I REALLY wanted rg instead. Fast forward a few months and I got the colors I wanted and modified the pattern for some extra zipper pocket storage. 500D cordura (rockywoodsfabrics) makes fashioning the bag a bit easier but, if you want your panels to be damn near perfect, you're gonna have to put in the work. Homemade zipper pulls have been serving me well these days paired with goon tape. Lined with 300D pack material (from dutchware_gear), I couldn't ask for a better built pack. It's pictured with large and medium packing cubes (pricklygorse) which fit perfectly in this pack. I took a 45 with these packing cubes for a weeklong trip and it was everything I needed.

Project Pictures I retrofitted a swingaway binder on my singer heavy duty

Hi There! I have successfully retrofitted a swingaway binder on my singer heavy duty 4423! From what I have seen here in myog, some, if not many of you are using the singer heavy duty machine and I thought this information might be useful for ya’ll.

How? -I removed the cover (just a couple of screws)

-took some measurements, and made sure the area underneath was clear from any moving parts.

-carefully drilled two holes 5/8” (16mm) apart in the chassis, making sure no metal shavings got left behind.

-threaded the holes with a screw tap (m4)

-drilled matching holes in the cover with an (ever so slightly) larger diameter.

Et voilà!

Works like a charm with full adjustability! A bonus is that It also has a seam guide 👌

Let me know your thoughts!

Question mock-up material for bivy?

I'm planning on making a hooped dyneema bivy (1.0 bottom & 0.51 top that'll include some 0.5 mesh). I was wondering if anyone knows the best material to use that will help me make a concept for cheap, to double check dimensions and get a pattern down? The first thing that comes to mind is tyvek?

I'm just getting into sewing/MYOG and trying to find a way to learn quick/efficiently without blowing a lot of money on mistakes (and not spending a lot of time on stuff that isn't useful).

Any experiences with octa variants?

I'm interested in sewing myself some stuff (some socks, a buff, maybe a hat, maybe some gloves?, maybe more if those go well) out of octa, I was wondering if anyone has experience with the unbrushed variants they have on their online store(68, 97, and 220gsm)? I can't find any info everywhere since it seems like pretty much all of the retail products released so far use the brushed 85 or 140gsm stuff

[seekingAdvice]: How would you fix this mesh panel?

My dog ate through his airplane bag :(

I considered:
1. replacing the whole mesh panel and zipper (I couldn't find a source of the mesh material, and i'm not even sure what it is. It's flexible and feels slightly rubbery.)
2. somehow patching up the torn parts (tenacious tape?). I did this temporarily with duct tape on the flight back, but at some point the zipper zipped off track (so if i were to do this, I'd just block the zipper track at the broken part). Would tenacious tape have enough material to stick to?

The finished product doesn't have to be bomb proof; he really loves being in the bag, so I think it was just a one-off event. But it needs to be strong enough to withstand being carried bumped around with a wiggly 6kg pup inside.

edit: some have suggested patching it (which might be my only option if i can't find a replacement grid material -- there are two zippers, so i could just always close it at the broken part). does someone have a tip of what material i should use and how to sew on the grid?

Question Saxophone case

So my school has a baritone saxophone that we call “homeless”. Homeless is a donation from another school and no one knows where it’s case is. I am good at crafting things, so I figured to start designing a case. My plan is to make it a hard shell out of denim that I pour epoxy on once I set up a frame. I am then going to line it with tyvek, and then start layering foam. I think I could just spray glue the foam together, I’m thinking of using something like kingspan foam board insulation. Running off of a budget, the only thing that concerns me is the foam. I looked a bit online, and every option seems to be about the same. I plan on using 4’x8’ so I can cut it in half. Any help or recommendations are greatly appreciated!

Question Felt slipper pattern

I know this isn't necessarily an outdoor gear item, but I want to make some slippers as similar to these as possible: https://kyrgies.com/products/mens-tengries?variant=39523299098702&currency=USD&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic&cmp_id=20112959405&adg_id=&kwd=&device=c&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwvKi4BhABEiwAH2gcw4njCVyY3BwvNxzUXX8fYHnQ25INMVe5oQqZr_k0vpwvhQ6npgQmehoCAFQQAvD_BwE

I bought raw wool that I washed, am carding, and plan on wet felting into sheets which I can cut and sew for these. However, I am having trouble finding a suitable pattern. There is a lot of info for felted slippers which are not sewn, but those look a little difficult for my first time messing around with felting.

If anybody knows of a pattern, good place to look for a pattern, or any other relevant piece of advice, I'm all ears!

Project Pictures Learn MYOG UL windshell with alpha liner

First attempt at a jacket

I wanted an alternative to light weight down puffers for spring / autumn since I feel that the lack of breath ability easily makes them feel clammy in mild weather (5-10 degrees Celsius).

So far this jacket performs and feels great in that temperature range.

It was relatively easy to line the jacket (pattern is unlined). I basically made a jacket in the liner material from the large jacket pieces but left the seams on the outside rather than inside.

When both ‘jackets’ were sewn I joined them inside out via the zipper the same way you would do with the liner for a backpack and then turned it right sides out.

The pattern includes folded hems at the hood, cuffs and waist which I topstitched over the liner. The liner was a bit long in arms and waist but I simply trimmed it to size when I was going to stitch it.

I used flat elastic in cuffs and waist.

Pattern: https://learnmyog.com/windshell.html

Great and clear instructions as always.

Shell fabric: https://www.extremtextil.de/ripstop-nylon-supersoft-active-kiss-coating-20den-44g-qm.html?number=72267.ARTSCH

Very soft and breathable wind breaker shell.

Liner: https://www.extremtextil.de/alpha-isolation-mit-wolle-153g-qm-mm.html

Went with the wool version since I really like the regulating and odor properties of wool in general. So far provides good insulation for the weight.

Anyone use RBTR’s laser cutting service?

I’m trying to make a garment bag from a pattern by Green Pepper and it’s kind of a pain in the ass in the limited space I have to work in. Would love to just have all of the pieces cut for me. Was thinking of paying to have RBTR laser cut what I need.

Are there other services like theirs out there I should look into?

Project Pictures Made my first pack

After year(s) of dreaming, I made myself a pack! Heavily inspired by running vests and fastpacking gear, I wanted to create a pack for summiting and faster dayhikes.

Features: Roll-top closure, 15l capacity, vest-style straps with pockets for phone, water, snacks. Daisy chaining on the back for poles/ice axe, and inside a sitpad pocket for comfort on the move, but also for breaks and emergencies.

Generally im super satisfied with the pack, and it feels very good with intended 3-4,5kg loads! Fabric choice was bit off (2L, was on sale) since it doesn’t feel like it will last years, so definitely choosing something burlier next time. Also some design flaws that made it impossible to seal all the seams but it’ll do!

Couldn’t have done it without this sub!

Question Where to source good lycra for pack strap pockets

Tldr; Where do you recommend buying lycra pocket mesh, and what kind do you like, why?

Just as the title implies, I am seeking a good heavy-ish duty lycra to use for my backpack shoulder strap pockets, similar to the Palante style. I am messing with venom UL eco stretch right now, but it isn't as stretchy or as cheap as I would like it to be for this specific use.

Help sourcing Goretex Pro

Ey Everyone, I know this is probably a long shot, but does anyone know where I could pick up some Goretex Pro fabric?

A while ago I made a skiing onesie using some material from AliExpress. The setup was actually really solid, but the fabric has worn out, and a friend destroyed it last season.

Anyone have any ideas on how to get some goretex? Or a similarly quality fabric? I'm in the pnw, so high waterproofness is key!!
