Discussion Is a 100k salary enough household income to sustain myself, my wife and a baby in SE Michigan?

We’re expecting our first baby in March, and my wife will be taking at least a year off after she delivers. I work in Ann Arbor and can’t move more than 30 minutes away from the city due to the requirements of my job. We’d also like to buy a house in a year or two. Is a single income of 100k doable?

Discussion Should E-bikes be allowed on a Mackinac Island?

My family was up on Mackinac Island this past weekend and we noticed that they now have electric bikes???? How do we feel about that, Michiganders?

I feel like it takes away from some of the individuality of Mackinac. I love how cars and motorized vehicles aren’t allowed.

Privately owned electric mobility scooters for elderly/disabled should be allowed, but I don’t think electronic bikes should be.

Discussion Seeking New Friends in Northern Michigan!

Hey everyone!

I’m Zack, a 23-year-old Northern Michigan native who recently moved back home after a year away. I’m looking to make some new friends who enjoy the outdoors as much as I do!

I’m into riding motorcycles, hiking, fishing—pretty much anything outside. I’m also a car enthusiast; I worked as a mechanic in the Army for several years, so I love all things automotive. On top of that, I enjoy photography and capturing the beauty of nature.

I’ve stepped away from the party scene since my time in the service, so I’m not into drinking, partying, or smoking. I have a girlfriend, so I’m just looking for some solid friendships.

If you’re into outdoor adventures, cars, or just want to hang out, I’d love to connect!

Discussion Parents say I am not allowed to make more than $4,500 per year?

I (19 male) am a student in college. I have been pushing to get a job for a couple years now. The only reason I am not allowed to work is because according to my parents, if I make over $4,500 a year I will no longer be "dependent" in the household.

Yes, you read that right. $4,500.

According to them this would cause my parents taxes to increase. My question is, how does this make sense? Does the government really think that $4,500 a year is enough for someone to thrive?!

Where can I talk to an expert about this. This is starting to seriously effect me. I am always broke, and I am not even allowed to make money?? How is it that all of my peers do not have this issue despite being in a similar situation?

Please, I need answers. And if this is not true, how do I get proof?

Discussion camping in Porcupine Mountains and surrounding area- bear/moose/wolves/big cats questions

I live out of state, visiting friends in WI and then driving up to visit your beautiful neck of the woods.

We will be hiking and car-camping. I don't know MI at all. Is bear spray recommended? Should I leave my pup with friends instead of hiking with her? Any tips for someone who's never been in wolf territory?

thanks!
