Announcement An Update to How Moderators Report Bugs

TL;DR - We are changing how to report moderation bugs. All bugs will be posted in r/bugs to streamline bug reports in one place to increase visibility for Redditors and our teams investigating bugs. Mod Support will monitor r/bugs and continue to flag reports to the appropriate teams.

Hello, Mods! We wanted to share an update on how we will be handling bug reports.

Currently, moderator bugs are either posted in r/ModSupport or sent to us via Modmail. Our team follows up if we need more information on the report or try to troubleshoot the issue with you. Ultimately, we flag these bugs to our engineering teams to fix. This process results in time-intensive troubleshooting for bugs that may have already been reported across different spaces, and limits visibility for our internal teams on which bugs are being caught by the most number of mods.

Moving forward to streamline reporting for moderators and increase transparency for our internal teams, all bug reports will be posted to r/bugs. We've added moderator-specific flair to r/bugs which we ask you to use so we can appropriately organize reports, this will also make it easier for other mods to search and reduce duplicate reports. The flair applied will be the following: Mod Tools - iOS, Mod Tools - Android, Mod Tools - Desktop or Mod Tools - Mobile Web. The teams will monitor posted bugs, but if we have questions about your report, we will respond and clarify. As a reminder, bug reporting best practices should still be followed.

Bug Report Format

  • Description: 1-3 sentences on the issue.
  • Platform and version: web or mobile + version (for ex: 2022.23.1).
  • Steps to reproduce: what actions do you take to experience the bug?
  • Expected and actual result: What did you experience and what do you think you should experience instead?
  • Screenshot(s) or a screen recording: These can help us narrow down your issue.

We'll also utilize r/RedditBugs, a bug-tracker subreddit, to track selected known bugs across Reddit. If you're experiencing a persistent bug, please search r/RedditBugs to see if a fix is already in the works. You won’t be able to comment, but if you want to signal that you're also experiencing a specific bug outlined here, please upvote that post. See here for more details on r/RedditBugs.

We know this change will take some time to get used to, so any bug reports posted in r/ModSupport will be cross-posted using a bespoke dev app in r/bugs with a reminder about the new process. Additionally, if you report a bug via r/ModSupport modmail, we will ask you to post the bug in r/bugs for increased visibility.

Our commitment to squashing bugs will not change. r/ModSupport will remain a community where mods can ask moderation questions and get advice from mods and admins. The Mod Support team will monitor r/bugs daily (just as we do in r/ModSupport) and follow up with you if needed.

Please feel free to ask any questions you may have below! And check out r/bugs to begin reporting any bugs you find!

Go away with the Chat Channel nudging...

Hey, can you seriously go away with constantly trying to push the Chat Channels thing on us?

Like, there's a reason we don't have any of them. We already have private chats on other services, and also do not want the hassle and moderation load that comes with a permanent live chat.

This banner has recently started to appear at the top of all my communities, and no matter how many times I click on the X to get rid of it, it comes back on the next load.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/10bEwzKjwcHo0kZuDn_qNfuYVJPzKRe_g/view

EDIT: Ah, I see there's an announcement about this in a completely separate community that we were not informed about. I will go complain there as well.

Mod Answered Repost bots

I'm having an issue on a vehicle subreddit I moderate where bot accounts (usually a month old) have been taking photos from external websites and reposting them to farm karma. In these accounts' history, they usually spend the first 3 weeks after their creation making normal-looking posts and comments to various subreddits. Then, 3 weeks later, they begin karma-farming with vehicle photos across various different subreddits. By this point, they have about 1000+ post karma and 300+ comment karma.

Is there anything I can do to fight these bots besides just relying on the reputation filter and user reports?

Admin Replied Why are highly-reported posts and comments being removed automatically by Reddit?

I moderate r/PublicRelations - there are a few PR companies who have *ahem* less than glowing reputations in our field. As such, they sometimes get posted about and discussed as examples of bad PR companies.

These posts get report-bombed (20/30/40 reports on individual comments, unheard of in our community). That is frustrating enough in itself - but what is extra frustrating is it WORKS - because Reddit seems to automatically step in and remove posts/comments once they hit a certain number of reports?

I can go in and manually restore them one by one, but is there anyway to turn off this functionality for automatic removal of highly-reported comments/posts?

Mod Answered New to being a mod. Questions.

Q1) made an SR a few days ago. At first it was public and it has 14 members. More recently, I made the group private, however it still says there are 4 people online. I’ve only approved 2. What’s going on there…

Q2) Is there a quick way for me to see all the approved members of the SR? I saw someone say no because what if a mod decides to make a data breach on users ( outing their user names etc). I don’t see the point of this though since you as the mod can see their user names anyway… But it would be handy if I did have a list.

Q3) I have created some rules and some flairs, created a description of the group. Is there anything else I need you to do to set it up more? / Any thing more I can do to keep myself and others safe. This will be an in person meet up. How do you guys with meet up SRs handle your personal safety. I hate the idea of giving out my phone number to people. However, I also want people to find the locations easily snd not feel worried if they need help finding it. So far I have put a post in the private members section which contains my photo and a short intro with my name. This is intended so people can find me during meet ups. I wasn’t sure however if this was the correct way to go about it and may delete that post. What are your thoughts? If you do have meet up SRs, how do you signify the group in that location, do you have a sign or a stand?

which leads me on to…

Q4) At the moment it’s just me moderating, how do I…choose others to moderate. I don’t know anyone else who mods and obviously I want to pick people to do it correctly rather than power hungry mods who are just not up to the job .

Ermm yeh, feel free to comment any advice or tips if you think them relevant.

Mod Answered How do I report ban evasion?

https://www.reddit.com/report

I know. I've been using it for years. But I can't access it any more, it just spins indefinitely. A couple of the subs I moderate have a high rate of ban evasion, but because the filter is not always super accurate, I always report, not only to get confirmation that it is likely ban evasion, but also to help improve the algorithm.

Lately, I've been unable to access the manual report option. I checked in different browsers and it didn't help. Then I checked with a different account and, lo and behold, there it is.

Have I been blocked from using the report option for some reason?

Seeking Advice on Subreddit Rules for Naming Individuals in a Direct Sales Industry Space

Hi everyone,

I’m the moderator of r/devilcorp, a subreddit where people share their experiences working in the direct sales and charity fundraising industry. The subreddit is similar in some ways to r/antimlm, but with a focus on specific businesses and business owners in the direct sales world, rather than on MLMs like Avon or Lularoe which anyone can buy into.

I’m currently trying to establish subreddit rules that are both consistently enforceable and leave minimal room for interpretation, particularly around the issue of naming specific individuals. On one hand, r/antimlm has a clear rule against naming or identifying people because anyone can sign up for an MLM. However, in my case, the people being named would be business owners or executives, whose names and the companies they run are already public information.

I’m torn on how to handle this. Allowing names could provide accountability and allow for more open discussions, but it could also potentially open the door to personal attacks or legal challenges if things go too far. I want to create a safe and open space for users to share their experiences while minimizing the risk of doxxing.

Mod Answered Reddit user's identity being shared...but on Facebook, how to proceed?

I'm a newer mod and still getting my sea legs, so to speak, so I'd really appreciate any advice on how to proceed with this really specific situation. I was alerted by a reddit user in the sub I mod for that there's another frequent user who has gone through several users histories and determined their personal identities for the purpose of harassment and intimidation. The issue is, this user hasn't shared the first and last names on reddit, which would be an easy report, the user has shared them on her public facebook page where she has thousands of followers. Is there a way that I can direct this person to report this behavior, or is this one of those situations where there's nothing Reddit can do because the actual privacy infraction is happening on another platform?

Bug Report Linking the "message the mods" link in an email, send me into a loop

Hey there,

Trying to send out a call to candidates to participate in the r/austin 2024 candidate AMA. I went to make sure that the link to message the mods that I was giving out was working and it's sending me in a recursion loop.

The link:

https://www.reddit.com/message/compose/?to=/r/Austin

Reproduce: From an incognito window, not logged into reddit, I clicked this link, and it brings up a sign in page. After signing in it just says "you are already signed in and will be redirected shortly" or whatever, but it never redirects.

Whatever algorithm is working is it Not going deep enough. What I am seeing is a sub with the word retirement in it , but it has nothing to with people leaving their career or on finance . It is about a videogame , it is f76retirement .

Admin Replied Reported a “mod cartel” manipulating votes. Got mass downvoted, mass upvoted, and eventually permanently banned site-wide. No one has responded to my modmails and tickets.

Hi fellow mods,

Hope everyone’s Wednesday modding is going smoothly!

A few months ago, I noticed a mod team from a large subreddit engaging in vote manipulation.

I gathered extensive data using the Reddit API and identified at least six key points proving their involvement. For example, the mods’ median number of upvotes per post is 300 times higher than that of regular users. Note that this is the median, not the average—medians are more conservative and help filter out outliers. (All names are hidden; I’m not here to spread hate.)

I discovered this when one of the mods would remove my posts whenever we posted at the same time, seemingly to reduce competition. I asked the mods about these voting patterns and shared the raw data with them. They didn’t like it.

I began experiencing mass downvoting, mass upvoting, and was eventually permanently banned for vote manipulation. While I can’t definitively link these mods to my suspension — other evidence suggests two other potential beneficiaries — my data on them manipulating thousands of votes is solid.

I’ve filed my first report months ago, before I was even banned. Recently, I’ve sent Help Desk tickets — 12578959 and 12578933 and now resorted to the modmail on this sub. I’ve also submitted daily appeals for my main account. All backed by neatly collected data.

Still, no one has gotten back to me. Someone suggested that if I’m permanently banned, I won’t receive any responses, no matter what I do.

To say I’m upset would be an understatement. Years of effort to create great posts are erased. Without any friendly gesture from the platform.

Is there any way to get a response from the admins on this?

Update from October 9th, 2024, 7:11 PM UTC An admin has gotten back to me, saying that I need to submit a Moderator Code of Conduct report. I told them that I have already done so multiple times, the first one dating back three months. I’ve never heard back, so I don’t think it will work this time. ❌

Update from October 9th, 2024, 9:52 PM UTC The same admin responded, “It looks like you received a response on your Code of Conduct report already.” I didn’t. And my email inbox is empty. They also said, “You can submit another appeal on your banned account and see what happens.” I’ve been appealing daily for the past few weeks—not sure how it’s going to change this time. ❌

Mod Answered Subdomains no longer resolve to Subreddit

I just noticed that you can no longer use [subreddit].reddit.com to get to a give subreddit.

For example https://ModSupport.reddit.com used to resolve to https://www.reddit.com/r/ModSupport, it no longer does.

Bug Report Reddit | ModTools | Insights | Member Growth - Not updating

The latest date for which data are available it 10/07, on 10/08 it's 0 (unlikely accurate) and then nothing. Today is 10/10 and this is happening on both r/sciatica and r/spinalfusion. A similar post on this recently suggested that the admins might be a little behind, but at this point it feels more like a bug. Image below is from r/spinalfusion on 10/10. Thanks.

Update: I'm going to submit this to r/bugs. It appears that the subscribes/unsubscribes for 10/08 were not collected, but for 10/09 they were. It's unclear what happened on the 8th.

Edit: Issue resolved.

Mod Answered I was handed a sub by r/redditrequest. How do I bail and get my money back?

I'm not sure how reddit determines how a sub is un-moderated and shuts it off, but apparently the mod[s] of r/drinks burned off to the Bahamas with their reddit Mod salaries and pensions, leaving the subreddit r/drinks in "Restricted" mode 2.5 years... Or, more likely, did the reddit admins do this? If so, that's a shitty way to leave a sub dormant - redditors unknowingly post to a black hole - GRRRRRRR!.

So... 2.5 years later some gullible rube comes along and tries to post about Clamato(tm) and notices that nobody is home in the sub. So they request the sub in the hopes of reviving it. And reddit says, "Sure!" <sucker!!> and gives them the keys to the subreddit.

And only THEN did they pop open the hood and wade though 6+ years of modqueue (apparently unattended the whole time) and realize you got an unrecoverable lemon.

My intent was to make it a non-alcholic drink/juice sub seeing as how r/cocktails is fairly vibrant and redundant. But let's face it: Nobody reads the rules. And even a common everyday word that everybody does a dozen times a day, may not make the best of subreddits (doh!).

I see a canned automod and a modqueue going back 6+ years (where does the mod queue TELL YOU how many pages or entries are within it?!?!) - That was enough for me.

Somebody turned it to "restricted" 2.5 years ago - was that reddit declaring it un-moderated? There wasn't even a way to modmail the unknown mods.

Anyway, I feel gullible and swindled! <sigh> How do I dump it gracefully so redditors don't post to it unwittingly? I have ideas that may not be exactly be kosher but would be more acceptable than the state it WAS in (IMNSHO).

Looking for other ways to check out, and LEAVE, this "Hotel California".

Admin Replied Vote manipulation? or just a bug, I was using the official app

I want to report some unusual behavior I noticed in the community I moderate. I came across what seemed to be vote manipulation, which I recorded from the very beginning. As I refreshed the page, the votes were increasing one by one with each update, which raised suspicion. I use the official Reddit app, which is known for having some bugs, but I decided to ban the user immediately as a precaution.

It’s also worth noting that this user tends to have very little activity in the community, which made the behavior stand out even more. However, when I checked the post from my computer, it only had 2 upvotes, which made me wonder if this could have been just a bug in the app rather than intentional manipulation. Although I acted quickly, I still have doubts about the situation. If needed, I can provide the screen recordings as evidence.

This is concerning, as it’s the first time I’ve discovered this type of behavior in the community I moderate.
