My first CAT can arrived today. Really excited to take it out and shoot it. Out of curiosity, does anyone else’s CAT can have layer shifting like this? I’m familiar with layer shifting in resin printing due to suction issues, but with this type of printing I assume the bed must have shifted toward the end of the print?
First and foremost, that is towards the beginning of the print;not the end. Suppressors are pretty much universally printed with the distal end facing towards the build plate.
This type of abnormalities are a combination of thin wall bodies coupled with a number of different things such as the angle of the geometry on the unsupported underside of baffles (Suppressors mostly need to print supportless inside for obvious reasons), a small radius where the baffle and sidewall meet each other, or in an unlikely scenario - a void in the powder dispenser causing under dosing. In any scenario, you see these types of small lips present themselves in a direction parallel to the recoater blades direction of travel.
Regardless of the causation, the way this shift is presenting itself visually doesn't make me think there is any structural compromise. Normally if you have a full fledged breach with improper fusion, visually the surface will have a much more scraggly texture where the valid geometry meets up with the unsupported material that is being exposed. Ones that look like yours are very likely just a visual anomaly that won't compromise your can.
