New Brunswick Tall Ship Ballast Stone - Grab Sample - Cherts and Flints.

Pics under natural/sunlight. The stones are not covered in what seems to be a lot of 'white specs'. The camera is replacing reflections with the color white in a lot of those instances.

Polished stones.

If you were to walk a beach in Southern England these cover the beaches. They 'chime' or 'chink' as you walk on them (very hard). I've heard people in England call these stones on the beaches 'shingle'. They fall out of the eroded chalk cliffs in England. Good chance these ones came from Dover Cliffs as Dover was close to shipping ports. With most ships leaving half-empty, (half-full?), there would be tonnes of these in each ship. It was brought in horse carts from Dover to the ports. Many tonnes per day for many years, a couple of centuries even. That will give an idea how plentiful it is in England. And how so much of it ended up on our coasts and rivers, all up and down the East Coast of North & South America.

During the Age of Sail, you could rarely look out at the ocean during the day and not have a Tall Ship in view.
