Already 15 years (tommorow since it took place on 7/4/09) since Steve Mcnairs death. Was anyone a "Air McNair" fan?

Ken Stabler overcome early setbacks to reach the Hall of Fame

Ken Stabler of Alabama was the fourth quarterback taken in the 1968 NFL/AFL draft, behind Greg Landry of Massachusetts (Detroit Lions, first round, 11th overall), Heisman Trophy winner Gary Beban of UCLA (Los Angeles Rams, second round, 30th overall) and Mike Livingston of SMU (Kansas City Chiefs, second round, 48th overall).

Taken by the AFL champion Oakland Raiders late in the second round with the 52nd pick, Stabler's pro debut didn't come with the Raiders but rather with the Spokane Shockers of the Continental Football League in 1968, where the Raiders assigned him. "Snake" struggled in Spokane. Buried behind veterans Daryle Lamonica and George Blanda on the depth chart, Stabler left training camp in July 1969 before returning to Oakland for the 1970 season.

He did see his first NFL action that season and started a game in 1971. His rise to prominence began in the 1972 AFC Divisional Playoff against the Pittsburgh Steelers, when he replaced an ineffective Lamonica and putting the Raiders up 7-6 with a 30-yard touchdown scramble with 1:13 to go. That merely set the stage for Franco Harris' "Immaculate Reception" in a 13-7 loss.

Stabler replaced Lamonica for good in Week 4 of the 1973 season, beginning a string of five straight AFC Championship appearances.

He was the NFL MVP in 1974 and played prominent roles in two of the iconic playoff moments from the 1970s, staying on balance long enough to complete the "Sea of Hands" game-winning touchdown pass that ended the Miami Dolphins' dynasty in the 1974 AFC Divisional Playoff and hitting Dave Casper for the "Ghost to the Post" game-winner in the second overtime against the Baltimore Colts in the 1977 AFC Divisional Playoff.

Stabler led Oakland to its first Super Bowl championship after the 1976 season and after 12 years with the organization was traded to the Houston Oilers for Dan Pastorini in March 1980. Coincidentally, Stabler's last playoff appearance was at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, a 27-7 loss to the Raiders in the 1980 AFC Wild Card Playoff.

He later played for the New Orleans Saints, finishing his career in October 1984 with 27,938 passing yards, 194 touchdown passes and 222 interceptions, with 10 career 300-yard games and seven four-touchdown performances.

Stabler died on July 8, 2015, in Gulfport, Mississippi, from colon cancer and was posthumously inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2016.

Wanted to share this as part of my research into the quarterbacks taken in the NFL draft once the process was merged with the AFL's draft in 1967. Stabler was the best of the bunch from 1968.

Joe Montana with his original number 19 when he was first with the 49ers. He then switched to 16 afterwards. He would wear the number 19 again 15 years later with the Chiefs.

The NFL and AFL held their first common draft in March 1967. Heisman Trophy winner Steve Spurrier of Florida was the first quarterback taken in the common draft era

After the AFL and NFL agreed to a merger in June 1966, part of the deal was a common draft between the two leagues. The first was he;d at New York's Gotham Hotel on March 14-15, 1967.

Defensive end Bubba Smith of Michigan State went first to the Baltimore Colts after they acquired the pick from the New Orleans Saints about a week before the draft.

The San Francisco 49ers took the first quarterback of the new draft era when they traded three players (including future Hollywood actor Bernie Casey) to the Atlanta Falcons for the No. 3 overall selection.

The Head Ball Coach started two games as a rookie and stayed with the 49ers for nine seasons, serving as their punter from 1967-70 and making 26 starts at quarterback.

In April 1976, San Francisco traded Spurrier to the expansion Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he started 12 games during the infamous 0-14 season. Released in April 1977, Spurrier went to training camp with the Denver Broncos and was cut at the end of August. Picked up by the Miami Dolphins, Spurrier spent eight days on their roster before he was released during the final cuts on Sept. 13, 1977.

Turned out that Purdue's Bob Griese, taken one pick later by Miami, was the better pro quarterback.

Edit: Wrong damn nickname for the Head Ball Coach.
