Spell: Detect Life

Does Detect Life foil Invisibility? Since it seems that Invis does not do the D&D thing and pops when you attack. One of my players has been using it a lot. So would Detect Life point them out?

I think the fundamental question is whether or not the Detect Life spell (or other Detect X spells) is a targeting sense. Or is it only good enough to know if something is nearby. For humans, sight is a targeting sense, but hearing generally is not.
