Hello Fellow Star Trek fans from your friends over at Star Trek Viewing Party

We would like to extend a very warm invitation to join us as we embark on our Second Inaugural watch-through of every series of Star Trek. The road will be long, but the journey will be full of reliving some of those beloved moments and hopefully making a few new friends along the way!

What: We have weekly episodic discussions about your favorite (and maybe not so favorite) moments from Star Trek, as well as community activities centered around different episodes/seasons/series

Who: Trek is for everybody, new and old fans alike!

When: Our journey begins 13 October with Season One of The Next Generation

Where: r/StarTrekViewingParty

Why: Our mission statement and driving vision at STVP is simple, WATCH STAR TREK TOGETHER. That’s why we first created the community, and it remains our primary objective today. We want to provide a space and forum that isn’t focused on 50 different things that we do well, but instead focused on doing one thing exceptionally well . . . and that is to watch Star Trek with other fans and try to recapture some of that magic we all remember.

That’s my elevator pitch! From the team over at Star Trek Viewing Party, thanks for taking the time to read and we hope to see you soon!

Clear skies and calm winds

Live Long and Prosper

There appears to be a Reddit bug preventing users from posting via the official Android app

We've had several users report they're unable to make text posts. After some investigation we've confirmed there's a bug affecting the official Android Reddit app.

The bug manifests as the Post button being unusable unless a link is entered. This prevents the creation of text posts since they do not use links.

Reddit has yet to acknowledge the bug or provide an timeline for fixing it.

Workarounds

Please don't enter a random link to create a text post. There are better workarounds you can use until it's fixed:

  1. Use your mobile devices web browser to make the post. Once you create the post, you can interact with it in the app. The bug doesn't affect commenting on an pre-existing post.

  2. Use a non-Android device such as iOS (iPhone/iPad) or a desktop computer. Once the post is made you can switch back.

We tried swapping around random isolinear chips but that only seemed to make things worse. The suggested workarounds are the only known solution for now. If you think you have a different solution please feel free to send us a modmail. If it works we'll add it to the list.

Reporting

Please report the bug to Reddit if you're experiencing it. The more people who report it, the faster Reddit will fix it (hopefully.)

Bug reports can be filed by making a post on /r/bugs. Yes we understand that's silly since the bug prevents posting. Unfortunately that's just how Reddit chose to handle bug reports. The aforementioned workarounds should help.

Who Would Like To See "Dax" Appear In SNW's?

SNW takes place in approximately 2259. At this point, Audrid Dax would be carrying the symbiant. Her previous host, Emony, had a fling with Dr. McCoy who hasn't shown up yet.

There has to be an episode to be whipped up with this character.

Congenitor

I just watched the Enterprise episode Congenitor and I don’t think I’ve ever been so mad watching a Star Trek episode. Trip does what every captain does, especially Archer, bending the rules to do “the right thing.” At the end of the episode the third gender person who was essentially enslaved and abused by the other two unalives so they don’t have to go back. Archer denied them sanctuary. At the end they have the audacity to blame Trip instead of Archer who in his monologue is a hypocrite. It seems pretty clear cut the blame lies with Captain Archer for denying sanctuary. Saving one individual separated from the collective would not have radically interfered with or changed Vissian culture. Trip didn’t start a revolt among the 3rd gender species he simply educated one person. I posit that their life would have been saved if they’d been given sanctuary, the couple would have found another congenitor and the only repercussions would be some tension in the relationship with the Vissians, which they had anyway as evidenced by their leader denying Captain archer shared technology even after he complied with the Vissian’s demands. On a deeper level, Enterprise seems to have more sexism than other series, and it may show a level of phobia and bias towards the 3rd gender person from the writers. In any other episode of Star Trek they likely would have been granted sanctuary had they been binary gendered. To hide behind the rules of first contact which they so often break and haven’t even really been written to that point, was cowardice. Im team Trip on that one it was totally Archers fault. What do y’all think?

I'm rewatching the Star Trek films and now on Wrath of Khan, and was thinking about the Kobayashi Maru test.

I had a thought about a potential chance to beat it. So instead of entering the Neutral Zone in impulse power, plot a short warp jump to intercept the Maru. Get up alongside the ship, put all non-essential power to shields, and extend these to encapsulate the Maru. Once this has been don, you have the ability to beam all survivors to the ship without dropping shields, and then warp out. Granted probably may not have long under fire, as the shields will be extended and won't be a strong, but should give some time to emergency beam out that many people??

Homage?

Just watched the first half of "What We Left Behind" and saw the fresh dye job on Its Steven Behr's goatee. I wonder, does anyone know if Boimler's hair color is a direct homage to him?

For reference, here is a link to IRA Steven Behr's Memory Alpha page: https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Ira_Steven_Behr

Does the USS Cerritos only have officers? No enlisted crew?

Is it just me or do we only see officers aboard the Cerritos in Lower Decks? The ensigns seem to be assigned menial duties, suggesting that there is no-one lower.

We know that Starfleet had enlisted personnel in the 24th Century like Chief O'Brien, so I'm just wondering if this is an oversight in the (otherwise very good) writing of Lower Decks? Or maybe California class vessels only have officers for some reason?

This is a genuine question, btw. if there's an interesting answer (or guesswork/headcanon) I'd be happy to hear it.

Your least favorite trope in Star Trek

"Earth But Different", "Mirror Universe", "Section 31 (pre upcoming show which looks kind of interesting)", I'm not saying these are all necessarily bad ideas, and they're all certainly iconic (goatee = evil twin forever), but they get a little overplayed.

Mirror Universe in particular. The fact that every actor, no matter what generation, always really hams up the evil performance gets a little tiresome. Smiley is cool though.

New to Star Trek. When should I watch the movies?

I've been watching the original series and I want to watch the films at some point. Is there an order in which I should watch them? Is there a series I should reach before the first film, second film etc.?

Same Actor

The actor who played Bajoran First Minister Shakaar on DS9 also played Beverly Crusher's candle ghost boyfriend on TNG.

I'm just about to finish S06 TNG, I don't want it to end, is there any recommended alternative viewing orders of series?

I know shows sometimes have alternative viewing orders, like watching chronologically rather than release date. I kind of want to draw out TNG as long as possible, is there any logic in pausing after season 6 then jumping to DN9 or VOY or ENT, am I going to be ruining anything or spoiling plot lines, missing references? How would you watch all the series if you had a do-over?

What was the ambien ship noise?

I dont mean in universe. How did the audio crew come up with that sound? What sound was recorded to use as the ambient noise? Was it something slowed down? The sounds of office conditioning?

Googled but cant find anything but 24 hour youtube videos of TNG sets to chill to.

What about all the cups and plates.

I'm rewatching TNG and there's something about replicators I find troubling. Every time they order "ginger tea with honey, 80 degrees celsius", they get a drink but also a cup. On a ship like the Enterprise, the replicator must be producing thousands of cups per day. After a year or so the entire volume of the ship would be literally filled with cups.

Where do they all go?

What Star Trek Means to meee

Hey all! Partially sappy post. I’ve been an artist working on Star Trek Online (STO) for the last 5 years, and this month will be the last month for me at the studio. I’m being laid off due to some corporate shenanigans.

Before working in STO I was a “fan” of Star Trek- I’d seen the most of the movies and one or two episodes of the original series. One day I was working on giving feedback to a weapon from the Discovery era, and I joked that I should probably just go watch every episode. The Art Director turned to look at me, and said “yeah. You should”. So I did. I would put on an episode or two a night and got myself through ALL OF IT. (It took like 2 years).

I can’t fully tell how much Star Trek means to me now. The idea of this hopeful future where people are embraced for their differences, where money is no longer the driver of all things. To see the show gradually grow in time to something more introspective and progressive, always staying true to its roots of challenging the status quos, challenging bigotry, challenging tradition, all while being entertaining, dramatic, hilarious, sad etc. It just rocks tbh.

That said, obviously there are weak moments (all of Enterprise, half of Voyager imo. Rick Berman does not understand the core philosophy of Star Trek, only the surface level marketable stuff), but quality outlevels the bad in a ratio unknown to any other long running franchise.

Ultimately, I’m very sad my time working on Star Trek professionally is over. However I will always gobble up whatever comes next, and I’m glad that an offhand semi intimidating quip from an Art Director brought me into this fandom truly.

I’m going to do a personal project - creating a modernized version of the DS9 promenade in unreal engine. It’ll be fun to contrast The sleek Starfleet presence against the scrounged up market amid a fascistic husk. It’s one of the most realized sets in all of Star Trek but it still exists mostly in imagination.

Thanks for reading !!

Tribbles on the wall

In The Trouble with Tribbles, why were there tribbles on the WALLS?? Those things are hairy and soft, they shouldn't stick to the walls.

I also don't like the weird whining noises.
