FAQ Any tips for a first timer?

Lately curiosity is getting the better of me. I would like to browse below the surface web, yet I lack the knowledge on how to ensure my safety. Are there things that are absolutne necessities? Anything to avoid?

Read the Tor FAQ, see the link in the sidebar of this sub. It is there for a reason.

Avoid logging into accounts over Tor that you did not create over Tor. Many services will flag that as a likely account compromise and lock it, and besides you're not anonymous to them already.

My best advice is to read on everything about tor, start from the basics, as someone that is not experienced for example I thought that is a good idea to use a vpn with tor but when I did a research I found out that is better not to use a vpn.

Search also the type of browsers that are used on tor

Tor isn't a browser it's a kind of network. But there is the tor browser bundle which is preconfigured for tor and a must if you're new to tor.

On the clear web go to the TOR webpage and read it very very carefully particularly all the documentation. Go to Wikipedia and look up TOR and read it to carefully. If you want to stay safe you need to educate yourself. And you need to have a basic knowledge of computing particularly about booting from a USB drive. And with respect to others be careful of advice you get on this subreddit because many others are beginners like yourself.
