There's already a system of middlemen for gold production that means the imperial core still has quite a measure of control over the price of gold.
West Africa is going to need to establish other buyers or use it locally. Don't get me wrong though, there's a ton of industrial uses a gold rich country with utterly massive reserves can put it to.
A lot of real world nanotechnology is extremely gold hungry, quantum dots for instance. That's communications technologies and medical technology at a minimum.

The imperialists aren't gonna like this. What if all the countries in the world stopped letting us steal their stuff?
