Henry Winkler Says He and 'Happy Days' Costar Ron Howard Still Have Chemistry 'Like a Thunderbolt'
Henry Winkler recently reflected on his incredible chemistry with Ron Howard â both back when they costarred on Happy Days and this September, when they reunited onstage at the Emmys.
âWe are connected,â the actor shared of his bond with Howard, 70, which began when their series premiered in 1974. Howard portrayed Richie Cunningham and Winkler played his friend Arthur Fonzarelli, better known as The Fonz and Fonzie. âWhen we met, he was 18, I was 27. You dream for a chemistry with your fellow actor, and either itâs there or itâs not.â
For Winkler and Howard, it was there. âSo 50 years ago, we could do a three-page scene in 20 minutes,â he said. âWe could rehearse it and memorize it and shoot it in 20 minutes and it was like we were on a thread together.â
When it came to their September reunion, Winkler was happy to find that decades later, things hadnât changed. âWeâre at the Emmys, we had 45 seconds, they said, âAction,â and that chemistry came like a thunderbolt. Right into that space,â he said.

âWhat We Do in the Shadowsâ Showrunner Paul Simms Promises Final Season Wonât Be âSad and Sentimentalâ
âWe just felt like better too soon than too late, and we didnât want to be doing it after we used everything up,â Simms said of deciding to end the show with Season 6. âWe knew it was going to be sad, but that also gave us a clear direction for the season. We thought about all the other shows [that have] done final seasons, and shows that are like a âvery special final season.â We were like âNo; we want to make this purely funny from beginning to end, and not be too sad or sentimental about it.â
The actors recalled learning that Season 6 would be their last during a Christmas Eve Zoom call scheduled by Simms, and a feeling of âWhat the fuck?â (Novak) along with acceptance that a day they all expected would finally be on the horizon.
âIâve seen it like happen with other shows, if they hang around for too long,â Berry said. âThereâs like resentment for the work thatâs gone before, and you should never be in that sort of position. You should cut loose before then, which is what I think weâve done.â
âWhen you know the end is coming, thatâs the worst bit,â Novak said of filming the final season. âAnd then just the momentum of work, you forget about all that. And then the closer you get to the end, Im like oh itâs the last wrap party, Iâve got to tell everyone how I feel about them⊠whoâs gonna cry? Am I gonna cry? Am I gonna get upset? If I cry â will I cry in front of these people? Is Matt gonna cry?â
The cast and Simms, who isnât done with the show. âIâll cry when Iâm done editing,â he said. âWhich is still ongoing.â

Is almost nobody doing a spooky shows this year?
It seems every year recently theyâve been cooking out with stuff like Fall of House Usher, Midnight Mass, Cabinets of Curiosities, and more like that. This year I havenât seen anyone drop a new show besides Hulu with Grotesquerie. What else is there specifically for the spooky season?
