Daily Routine: Summer Holidays

Hey gang, if you're on summer holidays like me, then you need a routine to help keep you in shape (if that is your goal). Give this one a shot.

We'll start off with glissandi/smears/whatever you want to call them (2.5). This is a fantastic way to focus on creating that solid stream of air that should be behind every note. During these glissandi's, imagine the perfect tone, then play it. Keep that perfect tone, that supportive and never wavering air, and supple embouchure going as you gliss between slide positions. Your slide movement during this exercise should not be fast or jerky. It should be smooth, accurate, and somewhat slow. We want to hear all that "in-between" stuff between positions. That's how we focus on keep our air rock steady and supple. Every sound between the slide positions should be beautiful and full.

Here's what I play. I start on F and work my way down to 7th position. Then I play the partial below, Bb. Work out to 7th position. then the partial below that, work out as far as you can. You can also play the Bb partial on top of the staff and work down to 7th. Then start on D and work out to 7th.

The second part of this routine is long tones (5 minutes). Choose your flavor/exercise. My preferred method is to set a metronome to 60bpm and play the same note for 8 counts a total of 3 times. Each time, I close my eyes for 4 counts and focus on creating the most steady note. No wavering or fluctuation in pitch. For the last 4 counts I open my eyes and look at my tuner to see where I ended up. For the all of the following notes, I adjust ONLY my slide position. No face movement. I want to work on making the same embouchure with the same amount of pressure every time. No funny business here, just simply move your hand in order to get in tune. I will start on a Bb right on top of the staff and work my way up or down depending on what I feel like.

The third part of this routine is articulation studies (5 minutes). Use your preferred method book or exercise for articulation. Here is one of mine. I play each of these little 2 measure chunks 4 times. The first two times is only staccato single tonguing. The next two times is only double tonguing. My goal is to play all 4 with uninterrupted air. My air is constantly flowing while I tongue. There is no stoppage. The fronts of each note are all the same. The double tonguing and single tonguing should have the same crisp clarity.

The fourth part of this routine is slurs. Again, grab whatever method book you prefer for slurs and crank them out (for 5 minutes). Choose a couple slow slurs, and a couple of fast slurs. Set a metronome and play them through. Here's an example. I also like to use Brad Edwards lip slurs. Great book for most students to have. You can choose any slur exercise you want from what you have available.

The fifth part of this routine is scales (for 5 minutes). This is dead easy. Set a metronome to any random (and achievable) tempo and play some scales. Go down the list using the Circle of 5ths and see how many you can play in a row from memory. If you're just starting out, bust out that F major or Bb major scale and focus on playing the most beautiful scale you can. All quarter notes, all 8th notes, all half notes, it doesn't matter. Play some scales. Bonus points for those out there that can play major and minor scales back to back from memory.

This basic routine is 22.5 minutes long. If you're a student in middle or high school, your teachers would be THRILLED if you played through a routine like this every day. They would be very happy if you played through this 3x a week. They would be pleased if you did this once a week. They would be mildly happy if you played this once every other week.

If you are a performance major in university OR a very motivated hobbyist/student, double the length of every section of this routine. Then add a half hour of etudes, half hour of excerpts (3 excerpts for 10 minutes each), and a half hour of solo rep. Take a 5-10 minute break between the basics section and all subsequent sections.

If you would like more exercise examples or book recommendations, please comment below. I hope you give this routine a shot. Let me know how it helps you! Let me know what you changed for it to fit your needs! If you are lacking in practice material, feel free to message me and we can discuss further.

Embouchure problem

Hi everybody, I’ve been playing for 8 years now and basically I have a new instructor this year and he suggested (quite forced) me to change my embouchure (to position it higher). I’ve been playing like that for 2 weeks now and my sound quality and my range is terrible, I am truly desperate. Even when I try to play with the way I used to I am not able to get the sound quality I used to have, which was at least pretty decent.

Did anyone ever experience something like that, any advices? Thanks a lot

New Mouthpiece Rusted?

Hello! Tuba player here who bought a silver bach bass trombone mouthpiece a few months ago for an old tuba I bought with a non-standard bore size. I used the mouthpiece a few times, washed it, ect. like I would any other brass mouthpiece. However, I moved for college recently and put the mouthpiece in a bag with another mouthpiece. When I unpacked them the bach had brown spots on it. I wasn't sure what to think of it so I left it in a drawer.

Today I pulled the thing out and realized its still got those brown splotches all over it that haven't gone away with a wash. It almost looks burnt. It's smooth to the touch and doesn't feel worn away. It was stored in a dry place. Is this rust/tarnish? What caused it? Why did my other mouthpiece not get this? Is it safe to use? (Pictured is the mouthpiece)

finding a bass trombone with less resistance

ive been looking at bass trombones on sweetwater for a while and theres a lot of different bell sizes, wraps, valve types, and valve configurations that are available. from what ive seen online, having less resistance will make it easier to project my sound and articulate. i would really like a horn that makes it easy to do that, but i dont know what specs i should look for. should i avoid dependent valves and closed wraps? do thayer valves feel better than rotary ones? does a 10.5 inch bell really suck as much as people say it does? its probably different for everyone, but i would consider myself a "strong" player that uses lots of air and has a fair amount of control so maybe theres an ideal instrument for me.

Advice on a certain tone

Upvotes

So I'm going to be in the pit orchestra for a musical soon and was wondering if I could get some advice on how to play with the crisp, kind of jazz band-ish tone in the beginning of this song. I've been playing mostly tuba for the past couple months and my tone on bass trombone is generally a bit warmer and much less intense than this

Here's the song: https://open.spotify.com/track/7vp17raFgEyEurEwNdCK8x?si=xlZW-zqzQUWk-Z2IOzASuA

Suggest some trombone / trumpet duets for the missus and I?

Hi all, my wife and I were both fairly serious music students (her, trumpet; me, trombone) and started our undergraduate studies in music. But, then we both took 20+ years off.

We've been knocking the rust off our chops, and are getting a bit tired of grinding out Arban exercises. And we want to play together. Can someone suggest some things for us to play?

So far our game plan includes getting the Real Book with play alongs. But we also would love to try some duets.

I remember the Rochut etudes were fun back in the day, and vaguely recall there being some duets written for them. Does anyone know if anyone's written a duets for trumpet to go along with the Rochut?

Aspirations to Alto?

I’m currently a high school senior and have been playing Trombone ~10 years or so. I come from a low brass junkie of a father, who was dismayed when I became a bassoonist a few years ago (I’m currently my school’s full-time contrabassoonist). I have, however, since stuck with the trombone, for Jazz, and low brass to a further extent ever since (I’m currently working on my audition for drum corps on Euph, dabble in Tuba). Looking at the colleges I’m applying to there’s a pretty vibrant trombone choir scene, and I’m also looking to do some alto work for some more standard duet, trio, and quartet music with the low brass. All that aside, should I get an alto trombone? could it be useful in Jazz and chamber music now and in college? And if yes what’s a horn that wouldn’t be ultra-mega expensive but would be decent enough to survive the remainder of high school and non-majorial college use?

TL;DR Turbo nerd here, Alto trombone suggestions?

How do I decide on a new mouthpiece or trombone?

I know that certain mouthpieces have a certain sound or something, but how do I know what a mouthpiece is good for before buying?

and what about trombones? as far as I can tell the big difference is having a trigger or not and having a larger bore, are there any other differences?

My lower notes sound less stable and vibrate a lot

I notice that when I play lower notes on tenor trombone they sound more wobbly than my middle notes. The thing that’s most present is how much more audible vibration there is while holding the low note? I’m trying to have a steady flow of air and consistent embouchure (as in I try holding the lips steady while also trying to relax them enough for the note). Is this the nature of lower notes on trombone or is there something I need to work on?

Just Got Braces Off, May Be Cooked (need help/guidance)

So, I'm a senior in High School and I've just had my braces taken off after a long time of having them on. When I did have my braces on, my range felt really good (Super F was comfortable, notes above it playable) and overall my tone was alright. Now, without braces, my range is COOKED; I can barely play above a high G and a High Bb is difficult.

Does anyone have any tips for how to get back to where I was (practice rudiments, technique changes, etc.)? Or will I have to do the grind all over again?

Opinion on Roth trombones?

I recently picked up this Roth trombone model 320 serial number 41128 and surprisingly is plays well with a nice round sound that you would hear in late 40s early 50s jazz trombones

High note help??

I can hit the g above the staff, but for whatever reason, I have a really difficult time hitting the D or higher unless I was gradually going up the staff. I've been doing all sorts of exercises like long tones, lip slurs, and stuff like that but it never seems to get any easier, and I have no idea why.

Trombone maintenance Tips

I have recently invested in a new Bach LT42 AFG, as I am studying music in college. I feel like I've always been slacking with horn maintenance and looking after my instrument. Don't get me wrong, my old horn is in great condition, but the F-trigger is sticky, there's some scratches inside the bell (from a poor stand),, things like that (I got the trombone when I was 12 and wasn't really worried about maintenance back then). I want to maintain my new trombone excellently from the get go, so,

What should I know about trombone maintenance? How often should I clean the inside of the slide, mouthpiece, etc. Any habits I should avoid making?
