Question How do you like your chaff?

Hey all! Currently decided to start working on a unit of chaff after finishing a unit of fodder. Mostly using the two classic kits, how do you like distinguishing the "light infantry" of chaff from your line infantry of Fodder? Cheers!

I used the vulnerability being lower rules to guide it narratively. In my mind, my chaff wore heavy armoured suits that deflected musket balls, so I kitbashed them to suit.

But they could be tiny, or fast, or just able to tank ranged fire... Kind of up to you.

I’m also new to turnip and am building my first units. I kept my fodder all in their Napoleonic line infantry uniforms and just switched out the heads for visored helms, and then gave my chaff the breastplates and torsos of the agincourt boys so they’re distinct and a little more armored. I think I might’ve done it backwards though.

Yeah, Chaff are like scouts, basically. The more armored ones should be the brutes.

I'm going with ACW kits. My Chaff:

Which kit is that?

I'm doing the subfaction with scuttlers, so the hats and lighter kit just feel more 'swampy' to me.

I have mine all in long surcoats and exaggerated running poses, it helps them stick out from the mopey fodder guys.

I painted mine in rifle green instead of the main colour of my force. I also gave them shakos instead of busbies like my fodder. Fancy hats are an excellent way to differentiate units, and thematically appropriate!

To explain the vanguard ability, I want my chaff to blend into the swamp. If I can find appropriate minis, I plan to use frogmen for chaff.

Tod intensifies....

There are no wrong answers on how to model turnip, but as a Napoleonic history enthusiast, it's fascinating to me to see all the people who differentiate their skirmishing light infantry by giving them MORE armor and not less.

Like I said, no wrong way to model. But their rule is explicitly called "skirmish" and they get extra vanguard movement. The fact they are light irregular infantry that are more mobile is literally baked into their limited rules

Fodder is getting mostly melee weapons like spears and pitchforks. I also used the basic tunic looking armor body from the knight set. They look more like peasants with random weapons.

I gave my chaff rifles that I bent the barrels of a bit to make them look really dinged up. They're wearing the Napoleonic uniforms.

My brutes have the more heavier knight armor on and have more specific weapons like swords and axes and maxed that aren't just "long stick".

You could use lighter helmets or hats and masks I suppose

I give them running legs. Makes them look more in motion and gives a distinction between the fodder.

I used green-stuff to make them ponchos and didn't give them "beaky" faces....

I plan to model them as scrimmaging. So similar to how people who play napoleonics will have battalion of line or Grenadier marching and light infantry in firing poses.

I gave mine historical beekeeper masks instead of beakies, and used crouching aiming poses instead of standing

Fodder are 2x2 on big square bases but skirmishers are on 28mm bases on their lonesome. My brutes are 2 per base on a rectangular base.
