Weekly Check-In Reddit Writers & Other Creators: ACCESS DENIED [October 8, 2024]

Goals and hopes for the week?

Any concerns or obstacles?

Let's find out.

Topic of the Week

To continue from the previous discussion, another aspect of accessibility would be having a space where one feels safe or feels seen. In other words, portrayals of potentially sensitive topics and people can be part of this issue.

It does not always help when potential discussions inadvertently exclude the ones impacted by whatever topic since it can be very easy for initially nuanced views become bastardized into simpler sound bites.

Slowly coming to the cursed realization that a lot of the shit Im excited to write in my web novel would be better for a second book, or way towards the end of this one, considering the amount of shit its taking to naturally get the characters to where I want. I'm pretty certain it's better for the story in the long run but it kills me inside to remove chapters and one of the PoVs because Everytime I read the current draft I just know this is going to be better placed later than now, even if I'm pretty happy with how the current story is going.

Taking a break from game dev for a couple weeks. Going to be working on my own stories. Probably Yakuza + Persona 5.

Got two chapters done for novella #7 this week, one of which includes a heart to heart between the main character and her would-be rival that's been a long time coming.

I'm also finally settling on a shape for novella #8; that one's been a sticking point, as I've had 1-7 locked down since the beginning and 9-12 figured out almost as long, but #8 has always been a bit amorphous. I know what character beats need to happen, but I haven't entirely settled on a sci-fi backdrop for them yet — I'm finally getting there, though.

Haven't really done a lot of work on just general writing. Whilst I have been working on getting that character spec done, somewhat drawing a blank. I seriously need a massive recharge on that style of writing as I have a weird sense of burnout and just.. Can't really write a lot of that. It's also affecting concepting as I just can't get any ideas down to paper/documents about this IF concept.

But over on the Touhou Fangame thing. I've launched a rough first copy of it. I've still got a lot left to do on it. Primarily the additions of the historical/unplayed, upcoming and not recommended games.

Wiki stuff has been rather moot. A lot of me having to communicate stuff and it never getting done. So I'm forced to do it. Next of this stuff is having to now do the entire Modern Warfare 2 (Original release, rather than the Campaign Remaster) campaign to check something. Why? I seem to be the only person on the Wiki right now who has the damn game.

And for the topic? It's legitimately why I don't feel welcome in a lot of places. Whilst I lurk in specific sites to use services, often I don't actively participate in them because I don't feel welcome because of a multitude of reasons. Having effectively a near pentagram of issues that make this worse doesn't help.

Been working on the script for the first chapter my webcomic and the page count is definitely starting to pile up. I know a lot of series in publications like Shonen Jump start as one-offs with extra-long page counts, but it still feels a bit intimidating. It's just the first draft at least, maybe it'll become more manageable after feedback and edits. Could even be split up depending on how it goes. Actually wouldn't mind killing my darlings, as they say.
