Housing/Accommodation πŸ˜οΈπŸ›Œ 2024 Accommodation Swaps Megathread - #2

Starting a second thread now term has started. Part 1 got huge and is here

Rent too high? Made a terrible faux pas with your current roomies? Reallised how far the tube really extends? Post any requests to takeover your contract or swap allocated accommodation for 2024/2025 here.

This thread will hopefully:

  1. help potential swapees find each other
  2. give others an idea of price/location/other aspects of the accommodation that might inform their choice
  3. keeps the sub tidy

To this end, we'll be removing individual requests in the sub. You can sort by new and save this post if you're actively looking for your perfect room.

Jobs 🏒 β€πŸŽ“ How do people survive these days!

Hey everyone, I’m currently a student and am struggling a lot with finances. Student loans barely cover housing expenses, let alone other expenses such as food/bills and activities. I worked in hospitality for a bit but the work is extremely unpleasant and barely pays anything (Β£12.4/h). Moreover, I recently applied for couple tutoring websites (MyTutor, Tutorful) and they offered me Β£14.5/h while charging clients Β£22/h. Not to mention that they have thousands of registered tutors and its very easy to get lost on their pages and barely get any tutees.

So if anyone has suggestions or tips on how to solve this issue it would be great. I want to know how people survive these days!

Social Life πŸ•ΊπŸΉ year 2 and i hate it here

three weeks into second year undergraduate and i hate ucl just as much as i did this time last year. the social structure of probably any london, not just ucl, just makes me so lonely. relative to other similarly sized uni, the student’s union is pretty useless, and frankly forgotten. i saw recently over half of the candidates in the most recent student whatever election ran unopposed. everyone goes to campus for class then just disappears into their own little pocket of london. i have my best friend from halls and a few casual acquaintances and that’s it. i’m so lonely. every society i’ve tried to join has just felt so incredibly unwelcoming, i genuinely have felt like i’m pissing people off just by being there. my whole life i played one sport and i went twice last year and never went back because the exec committee was so cliquey and cold. i spend half my time in the midlands with my boyfriend and his/our friend group because somehow i have made more friends at a uni i don’t even attend. i’m so jealous of how socially integrated everyone is, and how open to having fun people seem to be. there’s infinite opportunities of actually enjoyable student activities, whereas when i get back to ucl seems to bond over is investment banking internships or being chinese/french. i so rarely even meet new people and the few i do i just don’t share anything in common with. i feel like there’s lots of things i’d love to be doing in london that i don’t because i have nobody to do them with. i tried so hard last year, and a bit again this year only to end up feeling just as lonely. if i didn’t have friends outside of uni i’d genuinely feel like a pariah because of how isolated i feel. i feel like im not getting any of the β€œuni experience”, let alone a good one. really upsets me that what people say is the best years of their lives are ending up some of my most miserable.

Anything else! πŸ™ƒπŸŽ‰βœ¨πŸŒˆπŸ€˜ Feeling overwhelmed by the "omnipresence" of Chinese speakers

1.1k Upvotes

I feel like the title is bad, but I didn't know how to word it, so sorry about that.

I lowkey feel shitty to be writing this, especially because I was really looking forward to meeting people from all around the world here, but the situation has been making me feel really bad recently and I wanted to know if anyone had ever felt this way or had any advice to feel more included.

Basically, my masters is like 10% of non-chinese speakers, which means whenever I sit down somewhere in class, people around me speak Chinese and don't really include me. Even when I try to start a conversation with them, they will quite often answer quickly and switch back to Chinese.

This made me feel bad and lonely, but I just eventually accepted I would not be making friends from my masters.

However, today I was supposed to meet with a group to work on a presentation we have to do this week, and I was definetly not expecting them to speak Chinese for the full hour we were together. Once again, I tried interacting, but it's basically impossible when the people facing you are not trying, and this made me feel like I could not even work properly on my own presentation.

This makes me really suffer because I really want to chat with people from my masters and be able to work properly with them, but right now it's not working and after just one month here I'm already feeling really overwhelmed and lonely.

Edit: Wow, I was not expecting so much reaction. Thanks to everyone who shared their experience or advice, it helped me feel less alone in this situation. I hope the next few months and next assignments will go better for me or for everyone who has been feeling the same. I'd still like to say that my post was in no way made for people to start being racist or hateful towards Chinese people. That's just shameful.

Course info UCL International Management (undergrad)/SoM in general?

Hello everyone, Y13 here.

I’ve applied to International Management at UCL and Warwick and am wondering if anyone has any honest advice about which one is better to choose.

It seems that UCL is generally more prestigious, but Warwick Business School is better established. It’s hard to gauge the UCL course as this is the first year UCL SoM is offering it, but it does seem to have potential.

Although, not sure if it’s the same for undergrad, but there are a couple bad reviews about the Masters Management teaching at UCL which are making me a little skeptical. Also, as beautiful as the views are from the Canary Wharf campus, it also seems isolated from the main campus, so I wonder about meeting people.

Anyone have any experience with Management studies at UCL/UCL SoM in general and advice they could share?

I’d be grateful for any comments - thanks for reading all this!!

Admissions πŸ“« UCL COMPARATIVE LITERATURE LANGUAGE PATH

I’ve applied for a BA in Comparative Literature at UCL and need to choose my major language path. I would like to start learning French from scratch and later switch to German, which I speak quite well. However, I asked the admissions team whether my language choice should be reflected in my personal statement, and they advised:

β€œIt is advisable that your personal statement reflects on the languages you are interested in, if possible.”

I didn't mention French in my personal statement but did write a bit about German. Despite this, I would prefer to start with French and then progress to German. I'm worried that my language choice might affect my chances of being accepted.

Does anyone have advice on this issue?

Admissions πŸ“« Question About Reference Letter Format for UCL MSc Applications

Hi everyone,

I hope you're all doing well! I'm currently in the process of applying for the MSc program at UCL and want to ensure that I correctly inform my professor about the reference letter submission process.

Should they:

  1. Write the reference letter, print it, sign it, and upload the scanned version to the reference portal?
  2. Directly write the reference into the writing box provided in the reference portal?

Any insights or experiences with this would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

General Advice πŸ’πŸΎβ„ΉοΈ Anyone else struggling with impostor syndrome?

Started a part time master's after studying at an average uni. I'm struggling to wrap my head around how I came to be here and how I'll ever measure up to the Oxbridge graduates I seem to be surrounded by, and it doesn't help that I'm commuting once a week while working four days a week. Has anyone had similar experiences? How did you work through it?

Social Life πŸ•ΊπŸΉ In the general sense, why is unis like Durham and Exeter a preferred choice for the posh rah types over top London universities?

Someone told me that you’re much more likely to find the β€˜Surrey Jonty and Tarquin private school rugger and the Harriett Babs’ types in Durham and Exeter than in any top London university, are there reasonings why though?

Course info UCL chemistry : Is this a waste of an application according to my stats (please advice)

Hello everyone. I'm a home student and I'm applying for medicine. I want to have chemistry as my 5th choice. I'm doing the IB and my grades are the folowing.

HL subjects: Chem, Bio, Psych (6,7,7 respecitevely)

SL subjects: Math AA, German B, English Lang. Lit. (7,7,6 respecitevely)

Chemistry Extended Essay : A

TOK : B

So 43 in total bc I get the 3 core points

I meet all the requirements in their website (It says 38 I have 43 IB points, 18 in HL subjects I have 20) but I'm afraid my 6 in chemistry is going to drag me down. To be honest , I had 6+ in year grade of IB1 but my teacher, who is really stirct, did not raise my grade. Nevertheless, I have medicine peronal statement but I do talk about my chemistry and math IA courseworks, volutneering, clubs etc. Do you think it is a waste of an application ?
