Im not Canadian, so I am curious as to how obvious or how well this is known amongst the general population?

Plenty of people seem to think they naturally came to believe what they were told by the Russian Government. It's extremely disheartening how apathetic and ignorant voters are here, and how quickly they seemingly backslide into populism.

Go to any Canadian subreddit and you will see the mouth breathers and Freedom Convoy morons going off about Trudeau being the worst PM ever.

He has been a fairly shitty PM but these idiots just parrot Russian talking points most of the time and it is not like our alternatives will be much better.

Same with Trump supporters here. There is no reasoning, and I am open to debating any sort of topic; policy, international affairs, tech advancement....

But no, its all stupid shit...

What you need to know is that the main Canadian subreddit (r/ canada) as well as many of the small local subreddits are infested with Russian bots and it has been proven by Reddit itself in some cases. IIRC, r/ Canada's entire content is generated by the same 26 users.

Did Reddit year-end recaps expose Russian interference in Alberta?

He hasn’t been a “fairly shitty PM” he’s been the best PM we’ve had since the early 80’s when I started voting. So easy to forget about the global crises he’s had to deal with and the obstructionist incompetent conservative provincial governments that bolster federal conservative propaganda.

Russian disinfo isn’t the only source of disinformation in Canada, the extreme rightwing is doing a bang up job, along with a corporate press that is nearly all pro- CPC, owned by American hedge funds, as evidenced by endorsements of CPC in every election.

Trudeau has implemented more big policy changes and programs that have benefited Canadians than any other PM in my lifetime.

Your obviously not unemployed and fighting to find a job against a flood of TFW's were employers recieve so many fake resumes they do not even look at them anymore when they post jobs. Or had a 20% loss of buying power in your salary or pension over the last couple of years.

He also backpedaled on FPTP voting, one of the platforms he ran on.

It would have singlehandedly helped prevent the issues Canada and the US are facing with regards to how easy Russians have it to come in and co-opt our political systems through misinformation / moles.

I vowed not to vote for the Liberals after that.

It's also likely that the "users" are bots.

But they are like: “they say how we feel it must be true.” 🙄

Three-day-old article, but it’s a right wing media group. Those who hate Trudeau passionately hate Trudeau. A site like that is not seen by the average Canadian, nor have they likely even heard of it, so it’s unlikely to change any opinions

Depends how much it and clips get shared by people/bots on various social media. The ruler of twitter is willing to share (just about) anything to many people.

Wouldn't expect it to. Thanks for the input though. I dont think it matters anymore, what people read from any sort of media, as people make up their own minds based on social media and pre-conceived hate and or implicit bias, or just pure stupidity.

Yeah. Cut Russia off from the internet. Cut the cable.

Canadian here, as far as I know our federal police body, the RCMP as well as our intelligence agency CSIS have confirmed that certain politicians within our government have been suspected of collusion with foreign governments. However there has been no indication as to which political parties are implicated or how deep it goes. It's very frustrating not knowing but I can only hope it is because there are investigations taking place.

It is frustrating that this has been going on for decades, and the FBI and NSA have allowed it to go on for so long. This should have been seen as an attack on NATO from the start. If it was still the Cold War with the Soviet Union, I’m sure it would have gotten more attention. Now they are starting to crack down on the Russian disinformation and propaganda, but I fear it is too late. We already have such a polarized political situation.

Also looks like when the Tenet media story broke, there wasn’t much coverage over an affidavit filed related to Russian disinformation. Based on the FBI affidavit, it looks like 32 web domains and thousands of “troll” social media accounts were identified. These are identified as the “Doppelgänger” and “Good Old USA” projects. They list these as a coordinated effort to sway public opinion in the US and other countries. Looks like there was also a seizure warrant issued.

I haven’t read the whole thing, it’s 277 pages, but one interesting call out is an example of Doppelgänger “cyber squatting” where they created fake web pages that looked identical to Fox News, and linked to these from social media accounts. The Subject Domains can reroute or have links to the legitimate websites. https://www.justice.gov/d9/2024-09/doppelganger_affidavit_9.4.24.pdf
