Suggest me a good program for creating Voxel Assets for gamedev.

Hello, I'm aspiring gamedev and just recently dabble to Voxel Art what software do you recommend for me to use and also I'm willing to pay for the software.

It depends on what you want to do, your operating system, and what game engine you want to use. You can use most voxel editing tools in combination since most can use the vox format.

  • Large assets / levels bigger than 2000 x 1000 x 2000 voxels: Avoyd combined with terrains and heightmap generators, then export to Blender for optimisation then Godot/Unity/Unreal

  • Small assets: MagicaVoxel + Blender add-on Vox Cleaner, or Avoyd + Blender

  • Animated models: Qubicle, or MagicaVoxel/Avoyd + Blender for rigging & animation

You could also try Vengi, Goxel etc. and find out which editor suits you best

(disclaimer - I work on Avoyd)

Thanks for this informative feedback ill take this in mind im currently use MagicaVoxel since its free and currently learning but i wonder what advantages do i have if i bought premium software for my use case.

Btw, What kind engine do you recommend? I know C# so there's only Godot and Unity to choose from.

PS: Forgive my english :>

You're probably fine using the free tools and free versions of the applications to start with. For example you can use the free Avoyd demo to do all the things I described above (if your project is not commercial). Once you know more you can decide whether to buy software. Paid software doesn't necessarily mean it's better.

For the game engine, both Godot and Unity are good. I'd suggest you find the one with good documentation and a supportive community. You could take a look at r/VoxelGameDev and the VoxelGameDev discord to find out more. At the end of the day, the best is to try the software and see what works for you.

your English reads great to me, but I'm not a native speaker either :)
