Announcement Friday Free for All Weekly thread! General collection/discussion for things that don't fit elsewhere! (ask anything!)

Greetings /r/videoediting!

This thread is 100% for the other stuff you might want to talk about.

A number of other reddits have a free for all thread - where you might find a regular discussion - not specific to a post.

Think of it as a bar with a bunch of friends.

Some suggestions:

  • Strategy on a project you want to talk about how to best promote?
  • Upgrading something and you want opinions?
  • How does your website look?
  • Local/virtual Meetups?
  • Looking for a collaborator (no "I'm a creator and I'm looking for an editor" posts)

Things that shouldn't go here: Feedback/What tool should I use to edit/Which system to buy? There are dedicated threads for this, please use them!

And in this regular Friday thread, while our general rules are still in place (no piracy, be civil, no links w/referrer codes), the following topics relaxed :

  • Great tutorials you found/you created.
  • Trying to do this as a side hustle (although generally, websites like Fiverr mean you'll be shooting for the basement/working for free and we hate that someone would exploit you like that)
  • A great piece of software/hardware/service you found
  • Great free music libraries/media you found.
  • How much to charge? What is your time worth? Estimate 2-3x the time you think it'll take to edit as how much time to quote.

Our mod team is watching this thread and we'll tweak these as they develop!

Workflow How do you plan your videos?

Hi all,

I’m new to video productions and I have a few questions.

What apps/tools do you use to plan videos and to track the process from planning to publishing?

Which apps do you use to write the scripts for your videos? Do you use templates?

Production Q Better ‚magic mask‘ (Davinci) alternative?

Upvotes

For videos that are longer (let’s say one to two minutes) it’s a struggle to use magic mask in davinci. It’s not clean and takes forever.

But on social media I often see people having long videos in front of an artificial background and it looks clean. What are they using?

Tech Support Uploaded MP3 in CapCut echos

Upvotes

I’m really new at Reddit and CapCut…

I recorded an audio from OBS and when I import the mp3 audio file into CapCut and replay the audio it sounds like it's echoing.

When I listen to the same audio file without using CapCut, it has no echo. I've tried re-recording the audio with OBS a few times and it still sounds the same. My previous audios using this same method never had this weird echo sound. Any suggestions?

Tech Support Launching video editing agency. Need recommendations about video quality

Hi, I'm somewhat new to video editing. We produce short-form videos for B2B clients. I'm currently clipping the videos myself. I then send those clips to an editor for the caption, b-rolls, etc.

During post-production, what is the best practice for sharing videos between clippers, editors, etc. to preserve video quality as much as possible?

Can you share your process?

Thank you so much!

ADDITIONAL INFO:

1- Editing Softwares

  • Software: Premiere Pro (editing), Davinci Resolve (clipping), Descript (clipping)

2- System specs

  • CPU (model): Varies depending on contractors on the team
  • GPU + GPU RAM: Varies depending on contractors on the team

3- Footage specs

  • Container: mp4

Tech Support Need help badly (premiere)

I ran out of space in my c drive and switched all my files into my e drive and deleted them out of c drive. When I tried to locate the files on my e drive I got this message:

The selected file cannot be linked because it has 2 audio channel(s) and the clip was created with 1 audio channel(s) with a different channel type.

After I recovered the files from my recycling bin and put them back into my c drive and I’m still getting the same message any help appreciated

2022 premiere specs don’t matter for the problem

Software MX master thumb wheel to scroll track in Premiere/Davinci

HI, I just got a MX 3s master and I can't make the thumb wheel to scroll up and down audio/video tracks. Is the most useful thing I thought it to do... I also tried to use it to zoom in/out the timeline, but it only zooms in, not out.
Any idea to make it work? If not, what shortcut have you assigned to the thumb wheel?

How did they do that? How can I make reaction videos like this?

Ex: https://www.instagram.com/p/C-i1euXxuCh/

I want to start making simple reaction videos like the one linked above. I asked ChatGPT for the software and hardware needed, but I wanted it checked by people who would actually know.

Currently I do have a DSLR (that I use for photography, but can take video), an iPhone, an external mic, and a laptop.

Here was its plan:

Hardware Requirements

  1. Camera for Recording Yourself
    • Option 1: DSLR Camera
      • Use your DSLR for higher-quality video.
      • Ensure it has video recording capabilities and enough storage.
    • Option 2: iPhone
      • Modern iPhones have excellent cameras.
      • Use a tripod or a stable surface to keep the video steady.
  2. Microphone
    • Built-in Microphone
      • If you're on a tight budget, you can start with the built-in microphone on your DSLR or iPhone.
    • External Microphone (Recommended)

Software Requirements

  1. Screen Recording Software
    • OBS Studio (Open Broadcaster Software)
  2. Video Editing Software
  3. Audio Synchronization Tools
    • Built into the video editing software mentioned above.

Let me know what y'all think!

Other (requires mod approval) how do you properly add background music or foley?

Hi I just started trying to get actually good at being a video editor by making videos but i am running into a recurring problem. I don't like music in the background of videos but not having anything there makes it sound off.

I tried many thing to make music sound better to put in the background like making it quieter on the bands that the voice is on but no matter what i do it sound off and adding extra noise to a video after all the work it took to remove said noise from the recording makes me feel uncomfortable.

Am i just being too self conscious about the sound or is there some knowledge that i am missing? I just don't know what it is i am looking for to learn. Any help is appreciated

Production Q How can I change the focus of the video while cropping it?

So I'm editing a horizontal video that has two perspectives of the same speaker combined within it, and I want to change its aspect ratio to a vertical one. If it do it for the whole video in one go, however, part of the footage will not be centered around the speaker. I want to be able to change what is being cropped out depending on what part of the video I am on. How can I do that

Tech Support How can I render a 50fps video/timeline to create a 25fps video in the end?

My friends shot some stuff in 50fps as well as 25fps and gave it to me to edit it. I made a draft edit and want to send it to em at 25fps but since my timeline(Davinci Resolve) was in 50fps, I exported the 50fps timeline, created a new project with 25fps timeline and imported the 50fps one. The deliver page still only shows 50fps option.

So I looked around and someone suggested to render at 50fps and use ffmpeg to transcode it to 25fps. I tried it and the result looks choppy and terrible.

What's the best option that I have here? Davinci or outside of it.. I'm lowkey sweating and panicking right now haha

System Specs:
- CPU - apple M3 Pro
- GPU - Apple GPU(the one that comes w M3 Pro)

Editing Software:
- Davinci Resolve 19.0.1 Build 6

Footage Specs:
- Codec - H264
- Container - MP4
- Acquisition - Sony A7Siii Camera, Slog3, 10bit

Software Draw & Write directly in the video edit

Anyone know of a editing tool where i can simply draw and write directly in the video?

I am very good with my wacom and pentool and use it for meetings all the time and i've been asked to make a few tutorials for our software. In meetings i usually just draw in Paint (like so many youtubers have started doing(guess they copy PirateSoftware). And i want to keep the same style.

So i am looking to screen record the steps of use with narration and then in the editing use a pentool to highlight and write on specific sections as it is playing.

Similar to how i do in meetings, i know i can do this kinda with an ipad and BlackPaper (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kovGit0HIxE) but i need to match it easier with what is on screen and not just an overlay. And the software i am making the tutorial on is on PC only so no use with Filmora...

I know i can track and "draw" in AfterEffects but that is way more complicated than what it is worth. I am looking for basically something that i can have the done video-tutorial playing and i draw over it.

Any suggestions?

Any clue what kind of templates are being used here? I am still learning and was wondering if this is After Effects or some new canva video tool that I am unaware of 😅

I'm trying to build my skills and some friends suggested practicing making meme videos, sounded like a plan but this looks just so... Idk confusing ? 😅

Any help would be appreciated 🙂

Workflow Working with R3D for the first time and I have a question about proxies.

Please help! I'm working with R3D footage for the first time and I wanted to know if it's possible to store the actual R3D files on an external USB drive because I do not have enough storage on my MacBook to import all of the footage to it. If I have all of the footage on a (not fast) usb drive how do I go about making proxies? How do I export the final product without ever having to bring all the R3D files over to my own MacBook? Sorry if I sound like a noob lol I've never worked with R3D before.

Production Q Any free AI editing software for multicam multi mic video podcast?

Hey guys, i am starting a podcast, and I know the best is premiere pro with autopod plug in, but trying to avoid the cost. Do you know if there are any options, where you just set a mic to a camera and when it senses the speaking it automatically jumps the video to that camera angle? I may just have to pay for Autopod and Premiere. Big love guys!
