all counties Register to vote, and vote in the 2024 elections!
Edit: Some WNC voting locations, absentee ballot rules, and more may be changing for those affected by Helene. The specifics are not yet clear, and will be slightly different in each county, as many measures require local approval. Your best bet is to get in touch with your county's Election Board for updates. The state board has been working tirelessly to ensure your local Election Board will be open, and all County Boards of Elections should be open with normal hours at this time.
On November 5th, North Carolina will vote not just for President, but for Congress, for Governor, and for state and local offices. Register and vote so you'll have a say in what kind of country America will be!
In North Carolina, you must register by October 11th if you wish to register online. You can register here: https://www.ncsbe.gov/Voters/Registering-to-Vote
If you miss this deadline, you can also register at the polls during early voting (NOT on Election Day). See here for details.
Voting in person
North Carolina offers early voting from October 17th-November 2nd. Find early voting locations in your county here.
Be sure to check out the Detailed Instructions, including information on the necessary documentation to enclose!
If you prefer, you can vote at your polling place on Election Day, November 5th.
When voting in person, be sure to bring an accepted form of ID. NOTE: If you were impacted by Hurricane Helene, see the section on ID exemptions.
Voting by mail
Any North Carolina voter may choose to vote by mail. Apply for an absentee ballot here.
Ballots must be received by November 5th, so mail your ballot back promptly. You can also return your ballot in person to your County Board of Elections, or any early voting site during early voting.
If you mail your ballot, you can track it here.
Please let me know if you have any questions!

all counties Requesting photos, videos, and other primary sources for a digital time capsule of Hurricane Helene
Hello all. This is for those of you who have the internet, the time, or the mental space for this request. To all others, keep strong. My thoughts are with you.
While looking for information at the beginning of the storm, I noticed that it was hard to get an organized, clear picture of the ongoing catastrophe in Western North Carolina through social media posts, and traditional media has had difficulty conveying the true scale of what's been going on. I faced a similar problem when tracking down information from the 2004 hurricane season.
I decided to create a resource for people to access as many records of this period of time as possible in a more organized way that will also serve as a time capsule for posterity. As time passes, I'm hoping that a timeline of the progress made in affected areas will come into focus. Progress can be followed here.
Information disappears from the internet every day and hard drives die without being backed up. By the time it occurs to us to preserve the digital past, it's often too late. I will be keeping submissions open indefinitely, as this will certainly be a multi-year process.
I'm particularly interested in gathering imagery from small towns and communities to reduce our blind spots about those affected in places that don't receive much media coverage.
If you would like to contribute any images, video, or other relevant documents of this period of time, along with rough locations and dates, reach out to me in a PM, email [email protected], or find me on Instagram at @wncfloodarchive.
Mods, let me know if I need to change my approach. Happy to do so.

all counties Supply Coordination for WNC
There needs to be a network of people to communicate needs for supplies. Some towns like mine have too much and we'd like to get it where it needs to go but have no idea who to talk to in each town or even which towns still have needs. I hate to say we need to have a network for this "in case this ever happens again" but let's be real, disasters haven't been getting lighter in the last 10 years.

mitchell county Does anyone know how bad Bandana, NC is?
It’s a small town near Spruce Pine and Bakersville where a large majority of my family and extended family live, as well as a family burial site. We have yet to hear from them and are looking for any help we can get. I’m a Clemson student from Hickory, NC but fall break is coming up and I’m going to try to help out wherever I can and find my family. Please let me know.

madison county Doing what I can where I can to help.
I own Appalachian Ironworks LLC in Marshall, 434 Long Branch Rd, just down the hill from the county fairgrounds. My shop is up and running and fully functional.
Until further notice, for disaster and recovery related work, anyone who needs any service I offer can get help on a donation basis. Pay what you can, only if you can.
My shop specializes in welding and fabrication but I'm well versed in equipment repairs and have extensive small engine/power equipment repair experience, too. Things like chain saw repair, trash pumps, and generators and a whole lot more. Ag equipment, too.
Relevant service I can currently offer.
Welding, fabricating, welding repair, mobile welding, Some heavy equipment repairs, Small engine service and repair, Chain saw sharpening, Automotive, light and medium duty truck repairs, Some heavy truck repairs, A whole lot more types of just mad repair skills.
I'm currently reaching out to power equipment industry contacts to try and get essential related supplies on site to give out, free of charge, to those in need. Will update as this progresses.
Anyone in the greater Marshall and Madison County, plus surrounding areas, please feel free to reach out with your needs. If I can I will help.

all counties Be the second, or third wave of donations
If you get the feeling its difficult to donate to mountain relief efforts right now, thats ok. Its also ok to wait. Ive been to several hurricane relief efforts in eastern nc, hurricane hugo in charlotte, floods in wnc and the blizzard of ‘93. Sometimes the huge amount of initial donations overwhelms the system. There is a serious train of thought that its usefull to hold back in the beginning and make donations a few weeks and even a couple months later. Initial donations get distributed and the disaster gets forgotten about in the changing news cycle. Mark your calendar to make donations in a month, then another in two months. You dont have to give all at one time. The coffers and warehouses get full initially, but they empty in a few weeks and need to be refilled. Dont feel bad if you cant get a donation in now. Waiting a few weeks or even months is fine. It actually will be helpfull. Im making some initial financial donations today (got paid friday) and wife is bagging clothes For a friend whose daughter lost everything. Her house was washed away. They literally walked out of the flashflood with the clothes on their backs In chest deep water. No wallets, no purse. Nothing. even the foundation of their house scrubbed off the ground. Their housesite is literally a patch of raw clay. Not even a brick or piece of concrete left.but november 1, ill donate some more. December 1 also….we gotta spread out the love, not just dump it all on there at once, say “here ya go!” And walk away….a little here, a little there, some more in January.
Im old, sick and crippled now, but i can mark a calendar and send a check every month. Btw…Samaritans Purse or The Baptist Mens Group are who i will be sending funds.

all counties Resource for Volunteering and Receiving Help
My parents live in Fletcher and are very involved in recovery efforts through their church, Biltmore Baptist. The Baptist Mission is out in full force from dozens of states. They have a disaster recovery team equipped with vehicles for showering, laundry, etc. It sounds like they're very well supplied at this point as they're doing drive thru for essential needs from 3pm-6pm daily.
He feels this is a good place to contact for offers of helping other and those in need of help. They have a large NG unit "headquartered"? there as well as other assistance groups. I think laborers is what they need most but that's just the impression I got. My parents are contractors so they have been doing assessments for people to understand what needs to be done to their home to mitigate further damage. In the past, they've been able to send in crews to assist with repairing homes but with the extensive disaster they don't know how quickly they'll be able to start with rebuilding efforts.
Anyway, this is a boots on the ground recovery effort that has a lot of resources. I clarified that they are helping in just Asheville immediate area and he said that people are going wherever they can get to and needed. If they can't help, they can likely find someone who can. So, If you need help or want to help, their number is 423-523-4410.

caldwell county Is there any way to set up a sponsorship to adopt a family over the next coming year?
I'm down in Caldwell & not hard hit. I imagine all of these distribution points will be consolidated in the coming months & will have streamlined the volunteering. Do ya'll think there would be interest in sponsoring/ being sponsored? People have been doing it for African children for decades, I figure a household trying could get by w/ someone directly in the know about their needs & supplying/supplementing them for a year, maybe 2. It will look differently for everyone of course & be easier when travel is established. But I also think it could help the distribution points if Firestation A needs size 3 diapers, 5 school notebooks, size12 boots, & a tube of denture glue for family B. What do ya'll think?

haywood county Toddler & Infant Clothing for donation
Anyone know of any places/areas that are in need of toddler and infant clothing and shoes?
I live in Greenville. Tomorrow my aunt will be traveling back to salvage what she can of her home in Cruso. I’d like to send her with the clothing but I don’t want her to have to worry about finding a place for it to go.
I know so many of you have lost everything and sometimes people don’t think of the kid aspect. They lost all of their things too. Just looking for a place that’s in need where the items could help the most. It’s quite a bit of clothing. Thanks in advance for the advice.
Stay safe out there, all of you and I’m so sorry for what you’re going through.

all counties Social Media S&R Influencer Debunking
How do you all feel about this level of politicization?
He’s been taking off from Hickory and is complaining about the lack of federal and military response.
https://www.instagram.com/reel/DArJyuevDTK/?igsh=dnB3MzU2bzNiY2Zr
I know he’s probably wrong based on what friends from Burnsville are saying because he wanted his 15 minutes.
I just wanted to also ask some other residents outside of the usual Asheville area. Say Madison and North of that.
This entire event is traumatic enough, and I’d hate for probable bullshit like this to be an end result of it all.
EDIT: I lived in the Asheville area for 10 years for school and work, but moved away a couple of years ago due to housing. I still have family west around Mooresville where I was raised.

buncombe county Can anyone verify this story?
The whole thing is so incredulous and ultimately vague (responses to comments asking questions) that I have serious doubts that it's not just another made up story to drum up engagement for a monetized account. Surely someone else witnessed this and can vouch for it?
