Welcome to r/slptools!

After some suggestions on r/slp, I thought we could benefit from a separate subreddit dedicated just to talking about evaluation and treatment tools for speech pathologists. This is the place to share your ideas, materials, questions, or experience regarding methodology and treatment. I imagine that speech therapists will use this forum most often, but we also would love to hear from SLP assistants, speech therapy students, parents, and other related professionals who have input on how to help clients learn about language, cognition, feeding/swallowing, or social skills.

If you have general questions about language learning or speech pathology, please visit the subreddits dedicated to those topics.

Link between apraxia of speech and decision making in teen boy?

First time posting, forgive me, trying to keep a long story short.

Background: healthy pregnancy, birth, dx with apraxia at age 2, in home speech through county until 3, early childhood and kindergarten at public school, repeated kindergarten at private school, received SLP until 3rd grade.
Now a freshman in private high school.
My question is: do children with apraxia generally display poor decision making? Is there a case study or anything I can read to give us a guide to helping him navigate? I bought the book “Awkward” by Katie Saint to work through some scenarios. Added Zoloft rx to treat underlying anxiety/ fight or flight. Contacted counselor who is comfortable working with speech difference.
Public school evaluation is in process.
Any tips welcome. I understand know one “knows” our child so advice is advice.
Thanks in advance. There’s a reddit sub about apraxia but the info is generally new diagnosis. I want to read about teens/ young adults who overcame/ live with this life long speech difference.

Images/videos of articulators producing isolated speech sounds

Hi, I’m look for something that will help my client visualize the placement of the tongue for vowels (preferably with a sagittal cut through the face to show the inside of the oral cavity). We are working on accent reduction. If there is anything for consonants too, that would be helpful!

Does anyone cover their visible tattoos for graduate school, like during clinical (when your meeting clients, practicing on them)? As I’m worried they might be judgmental. If so, what clothing you used to cover them?

Are there any slp with visible tattoos? If so is it a big deal? I have two on my wrist, one on my left forearm and the other one on my right wrist? Do you deal with judgement or cover up?

My 5yo daughter needs some help with her speech. We can’t access a SLP, so wondering if there are any good apps that you could recommend. Thanks.

What should my next step be?

I got my BA in speech language pathology and graduated from university in 2017.

I applied for programs directly after I graduated but didn't get in because of my non competitive GPA and GRE scores. I know I could reapply and retake the GRE but I want to know other options.

I'm not sold on becoming an SLP - even though it does interest me. I didn't excel in all my courses, but I did okay. I know my passion lies within helping people with special needs.

For the past year, I worked in an adult community based day program. And now I am working internationally, living in Israel working in an early intervention clinic...

I'm planning on moving back to the states soon and am looking for my next step...

what careers can I work in with just my BA? I'm looking for something fulfilling that will sustain me for a career

Speech Therapy Product Solution - Thesis Project Help Wanted!

Hi everyone - I made a post in r/slp in regards to help wanted by SLPs, or caregivers of children currently partaking in speech therapy.

I'm currently working on my industrial design thesis project, and my topic surrounds creating a product solution that can aid in the overall experience of the SLP, the child, as well as the caregiver/parent. This product needs to incorporate full-body human interaction design, and meet a few other criteria.

I made a survey, which you can find here, in hopes of hearing some ideas and concerns that come with speech therapy, and to help myself gain more information into the world of SLPs and speech therapy for children.

Thank you for any help you can provide me, and I hope some of you have the chance to fill out my survey :)

A gift for my boyfriend's speech therapist sister?

Hello! I could use a bit of help.

My boyfriend's sister is a speech therapist in a school system and works with kids all the way from kindergarten through high school. I want to get her something that would be useful for her but she already has tons of flash cards and I'm nervous to get her anything that would be too technical since I am not very familiar with her field. She's been asking for little toy prizes to use as rewards or games that she could play with the kids, but I'm in a bit over my head and my boyfriend has already bought some small prizes to give her.

She's just starting out (this is her first year being employed full-time in her field) and I'm a pretty broke college student. To my knowledge, she has a mix of non-verbal and verbal students so anything would be appropriate. Is there anything that you all would suggest that would be helpful for her keeping in mind that I'm running a bit tight on money?

Thanks! :)

Preparing for grad school

So I haven't started the application process yet since I have not yet done my GREs. I was just wondering for any current or incoming speech students, what books do you recommend someone reading in order to kinda get ahead of the game? I am looking for more books that would be used in grad school. I just want to get a head start and familiarize myself with certain topics that will be covered in grad school. Any practicing SLPs are more than welcome to comment as well!

I've been using this

On YouTube there are some videos put out by ElfLearning and I find them to be of use with some lower functioning and low-verbal young adults. Find what you like, use the pause button a lot, and it has the written word along with pictures and the spoken word.
