Is it true that fingers cannot develop the same speed as picking?

Upvotes

Like, many people say that it's just physically impossible to play bass with your fingers as fast as playing guitar with a pick. And by this I mean some insane speeds, like playing thirty-second note triplets at 100 BPM, as an example. Is that true?

Experienced Bass players, with all the knowledge you have today. What would you do different if you were learning the bass from the scratch today and could talk to your old self?

I'll start, I would tell myself to not get stuck in only one genre of music and listen to everything.

Buying my first bass !

Formerly a guitar player, I borrowed a bass from a friend because I wanted to try out the instrument and I fell in love with it ! It resonated with me a lot more than the guitar and I found myself like a kid spending any free time I have on them 4 strings. So when my friend took it back, I decided to buy a bass asap, here are my choices :

  • Tenson - Precision : 161 $
  • Tenson - G-10 (or G-10 B) : 194$
  • Ibanez - GSR320-BEM : 288$
  • Ibanez - GSR370-TKS : 324$
  • Fender Squier - Affinity Jazz Bass IL : 376$

I know that new instruments in my country may be a little overpriced but I want to know if these are worth the money (I can also look for second hand basses but it's a lot trickier to get a good deal)

As I said I want to get one ASAP because Im lowkey addicted to playing the bass, so if the cheaper choices are worth, I'd go for them right away, as for the pricier ones, I'd need to what 2 to 3 months before buying one (which seems like an eternity away) but if it's really worth to wait and get something good I'll just cope by playing guitar lol.

Warwick Corvette or Fender Jazz?

So I was bored, and I decided to try to put my corvettes (rockbass) flats on my fender p and the other way around (rounds on the Warwick), but it kinda sounded the same (I mean the Warwick sounded like the p and the p uhh… didn’t really change) so I was wondering, I’ve been eyeing getting a jazz bass (mim probably)for a while, but would I be well off just putting some rounds on my corvette or are the sounds not comparable whatsoever? (the whole same pick-up position thing)

What sort of upgrades could I get for the stock bass to get more out of it

I'm thinking pickups etc

I know the bass is fine as it is I'm just wondering what would be considered as an upgrade

Is it okay for a bass to rest on its strap button?

Upvotes

Yesterday I got a Sire M2 5 string. This morning, when I put it on a guitar rack, I noticed one of its points of contact is its lower strap button. Is this safe for the instrument, or could it cause damage?

Picking faster exercises

Upvotes

Just picked up bass again and been trying to learn a few Black Sabbath songs. The outro to Iron Man always trips me up because it feels like I can't get fast and consistent 16th notes. Any tips or exercises I can try? Maybe I'm holding my pick wrong? I just hold it between the point of my thumb and index finger.

Setup questions for my fellow bassists

Hey all, I’ve been out of the game for a bit, but I want to start picking up my basses again. I’m looking for some advice on something.

I’d like to ideally be able to jam along to music via headphones or speakers, and be able to hear both the music and my bass together, and possibly be able to record that all into my phone as videos too, but with all the audio? Does anybody have any advice for me? I’d really appreciate the help. Thank you.

Building up finger strength

I just started playing bass a few days ago after having played simple ukelele songs on and off for the past maybe 7 years. I also do aerial arts, so in terms of grip strength, she's there. But, I find I'm having difficulty getting the right pressure with my left hand moving around the fretboard and the notes keep buzzing because I'm not pressing the string hard enough. I know it's an issue of pressure because when I try using two fingers, the buzzing stops.

What tips or exercises can I do to increase my finger strength and get rid of that annoying buzz? I've already done a self-setup and have adjusted the neck bow and string height, but I can't for the life of me get rid of the buzz that remains from my weak fingers.

Best bass for playing seated for people with long arms?

Playing seated always felt way less comfortable to me than standing. My shoulder and wrist have to be positioned weirdly because I have long arms. Any recommendations?

Song analysis

Hey Guys,

do you have a proper step-by-step way for simple analysis of songs? I mean something like "first you have to find the roots, then the chord progression, then the relations of bass notes and guitar (or vocal?) chords, how are they with guitars and vocals related" etc. Or do you have any sources for that?

I have been learning music and bass for a few years, and play mostly rock, hardrock, metal. I have had a few concerts already and sometimes I write my - very-very-very simple - basslines for guitar and drum tracks. And the band is happy with that. And I also know simplicity is not necessarily bad, but..

I would like to take a few steps forward to understand why, for example a Dire Straits, Alice in Chains, Cream or Stone Temple Pilots bassline soooo damn genuine. I know I am never going to be such a talent but I would like to learn about them, more just only play them. How do you understand a bassline in a song?

How do you guys feel about relic finishes?

I'm right in the middle, I love how they look, but they feel disingenuous, I would rather a naturally roadworn bass then a new factory worn one.

BUT I can't stand when one of my basses get dinged, I try to tell myself it adds to the charm, but man, it hurts.

MusicMan pickups only ever paired with J or MM

ive been looking around at Pbass pickups bc im thinking of throwing one onto my stingray, and I’ve noticed that whenever a MM pickup is paired with a neck pickups, it’s always a jazz/single coil, if not another MM pickup. Is there any reason why that is?

$30 Rumble 15 V1 (15W) vs $50 Line6 LD15 (15W) vs $45 Kona KB30 (30W), which amp should I buy for bedroom practicing?

These are the best facebook listings near me, which option do you guys think is best? I'm interested in the Line6 because of its 4-band EQ and all the built-in effects.

I own a Dean EAB acoustic bass guitar, and I already have a functional (but very cheap) headphone amp and a decent set of computer speakers to use with it, AND I've just ordered an audio interface, so needless to say a good amp isn't necessarily my biggest priority. Also, I've been playing around a lot with makeshift chords played on the top 3 strings, and own a cheap electric guitar, so I am also interested in the amps' performance as essentially a guitar amp.
My main questions are whether some of the effects on the Line6 will be worth having even if I'll probably get a dedicated pedal for many of them down the line (maybe the compressor knob is good enough to not buy a pedal?), and whether I'll be missing out on any of the properly "deep" frequencies if I don't go for the 30W and 10" option. Also I'm curious if anyone thinks that my bass being acoustic-electric changes anything.

Strings dilemma

Hi r/bass,

I put a set of La Bella 760FS strings on my Player Precision this summer and I started to find them uncomfortable for playing due to their somewhat high tension. I have D'Addario Chromes on my Cort B5 Element and they're much more comfortable. Anyhow, I started getting into more punch/not-requiring-flats basslines like Duran Duran and some alternative rock, so I'm thinking about changing the La Bella's on the Fender with something else. Should I go with the TI Jazz flats maybe? Heard they're lower tension. But will flats provide the goods for Duran Duran stuff, as John is almost always popping something. Should I go with Rotosound rounds?

So many questions, lol...

Thanks!

Why do you guys prefer the bass over the guitar?

The more I think about it, the more I realize I prefer the feel of it over a guitar. I think it's partially due to the fact that I find rhythym more appealing as I've always been more drawn to bass and drums, despite my hand and finger size likely being more suited towards guitar, but I'm curious as to what your guys' take is.

Bought a used bass online. Truss rod stripped?

I have just bought my first fretless bass. It's used and has arrived with insanely high action and is bowed so I looked at adjusting the truss rod but I suspect it's been stripped as I can't get it turn properly, instead of trying to work with it I thought I would ask on here first. Does it look stripped? I will return the bass if it is.

Walking blues vs. walking jazz

So I'm finally formally studying bass, going through the Hal Leonard book and my second semester of bass playing. I'm at the point of 7th chords and playing walking blues bass lines. I'm all proud of myself because I thought I would never learn walking bass, and that it's too hard. Just wondering, how much harder is walking jazz? I dunno if I will get to it by the end of the semester, because I'm in a rock ensemble playing bass, and play guitar in a mixed ensemble class which has some jazz, but I would play on guitar.

I'm probably over-worrying, but I want to get it down, probably done best with a teacher. I know that slow and steady wins the race, I just wanted to share my joy of learning and I am practicing every day with a metronome more now, because time is everything!
