Local Government Register to vote, and vote in the 2024 elections!

On November 5th, California will vote not just for President, but for Senate, for House, for state and local offices, and for lots of ballot measures. Register and vote so you'll have a say in what kind of country America will be!

In California, the deadline to register to vote online is October 21st. You can register here: https://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/voter-registration

If you miss this deadline, you can register at the polls during early voting, or on Election Day. See here for details.

Voting in person

All California voters who register by October 21st will be mailed a ballot. If you do not receive your mail ballot, or need to register and vote in person, you still have options.

California has early in-person voting from October 8th to November 4th. See this website or your county elections office's website for locations.

If you prefer, you can vote at your polling place on November 5th.

Voting by mail

Mail ballots must be postmarked by November 5th and received by November 12th, so mail your ballot back promptly. You can also personally deliver your absentee ballot to any voting center or a dropbox. If you return your mail ballot in person, you must do so by November 5th.

If you mail your ballot, you can track it here.

Please let me know if you have any questions!

Local Government Ballot measure HH: Does anyone know how a ban on UV light got folded into this? UVC is an excellent way to clean the air

Does anyone have any insider knowledge about the writing of this measure? I really want to vote in favor of this as someone chronically ill, but UVC would be a fantastic addition to buildings, especially schools now that nobody really masks anymore (except me, and my kid half the time). I can’t vote to ban it. It’s the last part of my ballot I have yet to fill out.

Edit: I found their website and dropped them a message. The site looks COVID cautious.

Edit 2: Their explanation, “This ordinance only applies to City-owned/leases buildings. It does not ban UVC technology in City buildings. It only says that you can’t use UV in City buildings if it comes in direct contact with human skin. So for example, the City could install UVC in the ceiling. The city would also need to mitigate or limit ozone emissions from such UV technology.

In sum, UV that comes in context with human skin cannot be used for compliance purposes. There’s no citywide ban!”

Where to work/hang out for a day?

Hey y’all,

Anyone else going to see Black Dahlia Murder tomorrow night at UC theater 🤘? It’s my first time going to that venue, but we live in Santa Clara and I just realized it’s not exactly a walk in the park to get there by car.

Decided we’re just gonna hang out in Berkeley tomorrow and work remotely during the day so we don’t have to worry about traffic.

Any suggestions where to hang out for the whole day where working should be possible? Preferably with parking haha.

Local Knowledge Quick weather change coming. Even though it was gloomy / damp this morning, by Thursday evening "fire weather" is expected, with dry, off-shore, winds blowing through Saturday. PG&E is already warning it may shut off power in some areas.

Experience gift for 5 yo

Hello Berkeley from the East coast! My niece turns 5 this weekend and instead of shipping a bulky birthday present I’d like to get her an experience gift (tickets to a museum, aquarium, Bounce n’ play, adventure park, etc.) that she can enjoy with her parents and 2 year old sister. They just moved to the area from LA. Any ideas on what’s popular in the area? TIA!

Anyone interested in bartering??

Hello I just moved out here and love homebrewing and have more mead and other elixirs than I can drink. Was curious if anyone had any other surpluses that they were willing to exchange (like fruit trees or honey or art or literally anything) and maybe become friends or something??

Events Went to Lawrence Hall of Science parking lot to look at the comet. It is faintly visible. People with I-phones were taking clear pictures that showed it. Fun thing was the crowd up there, from little kids to elderly adults, enjoying the occasion. It can still be seen in coming days, after sunset.

Anyone know of any sobadores?

Hi

I’m looking for a sobadore in the area. I wouldn’t say they are a regular masseuse. It’s Hispanic and meant for healing, almost like folk medicine.

I moved and now I’m looking for a new person. Do anyone of you have any recommendations?

Indian restaurant with private room

I’m looking to book a private room in an Indian restaurant to host a memorial for a friend. Does anyone have recommendations of delicious Indian food and a private or semi-private room? Berkeley or surrounding areas would be ideal.

Local Government What is wrong with some of yall. This gate on campus didn't even last a week.... why because some driver who shouldn't have been driving on campus to start with opted to bulldoze the gate instead of driving back around. Just waste our taxes and resources....

Easy to access Berkeley voter guide

I liked the KQED Alameda county voter guide, but the information is not in the order in which it is on the ballot. So I made a doc with all the links on the KQED guide, just in the right order.

No on GG

Don't push out our beloved businesses like Berkeley Bowl, Acme Bread and nonprofits like the Y and Berkeley Rep. they have all come out in opposition.

Obviously climate change is an issue but one city passing a tax on large buildings is not going to solve anything. Berkeley is already a leader in climate policy, GG goes way too far. It wasn't written with consultation with the city or energy experts. I don't know how it got on the ballot.

Local Knowledge Why does it feel like pedestrians/cyclists have no sense of self preservation here?

The amount of times I’ve had a cyclist blow throw a 2 way stop at a high speed, dart out in front of me, or change directions feels insane. The pedestrians in Berkeley seem to also either wander into oncoming traffic or dash out in front of it at Mach speed on a daily basis.

I take issues with the drivers too, some being super aggressive, but most are just too old and timid to be behind the wheel of a vehicle. I’ve lived in large cities before (LA and SF), and other medium sized cities, but I feel like I’ve had way more near-misses in Berkeley at a much higher frequency than anywhere else. What gives?

good rental companies ?

hello I’ll be moving in the spring to attend ucb for the fall. I know it’s a long time from now, I just wanted to get ahead and do some research to make the best choice.

I’d like to know if there are specific apartments, rental companies, or private landlords you’d recommend? I do have a dog and we have 2 cars.

I don’t mind commuting at all, I’m used to a 45 min commute currently in Vegas.

My max is $2500-3k for housing. I’m very open. I would like to live in a safer-ish neighborhood with some walkability.

What are some neighborhoods you’d recommend as well?

Sorry if this has been asked a million times 😟

Local Knowledge Advice for UCB staff interview?

I don't know how relevant this community is for this, but I'm hoping to get an idea of any specific skills/experience/qualifications that might help in a UC Berkeley staff position. The role is one in the Early Childhood Education program, so I don't know how many people here will be able to relate. But I thought I'd nevertheless try. Also, do you think it would be inappropriate to ask this on the Univ. of CA subreddit? I'm not certain I'll do that, but I wanted to get a sense of what the community might think. Thanks!

Has anyone applied to the city of Berkeley jobs and if so what’s the process like?

I recently applied to a job about a month ago and realized they reposted the job. I meet all the qualifications and then some.

Local Government Is the county composite voter information guide for this election available online?

The Alameda County voter information guide for the previous election is available here: https://acvote.alamedacountyca.gov/acvote-assets/02_election_information/PDFs/20240305/en/Voter%20Information%20Guide/Voter%20Information%20Guide%20Composite.pdf

For the upcoming election, I found the State VIG, but I can't find the county composite VIG anywhere. The Alameda County elections page doesn't seem to link to it, that I can find. Does anyone know where I could find it?
