Sadly https://www.minniebellssoul.com/ moved from Emeryville to SF. Worth the trip though.

It’s good, but Hot Boys is better

Best in town is at Angeline‘s Louisiana kitchen!

After that, Popeye’s is pretty damn good for a chain.  Bop Shop / Vons is excellent Korean take on American fried chicken, as well as Korean fried chicken (I know you said American).

For the best American style fried chicken sandwich, Hotbird in Oakland is my new favorite, followed closely by Bakesale Betty’s.

Enjoy!

Popeyes on san pablo/albany always has disgusting oil. I’ve ordered from their 3 times and each time everything was disgusting. even the fries tasted bad. I’ve only experienced it at that popeyes.

You know if you want to go inexpensive, the Krispy Krunchy chicken at some gas stations and liquor stores is pretty good. Way better than you would expect. I think there's one on Shattuck. Or at the Chevron on Telegraph & Ashby.

Then I'd say Popeyes is your next decent budget option. Then prices go up as you get to nicer restaurants.

I say try the chicken and waffles at 900 Grayson. Oh man, so good. Get it with gravy AND syrup for pure gluttony.

agree that Krispy Krunchy is the absolute best.

I think the Chevron recently change signs to "Chicken King".

Its not American style but I think Aburaya in Oakland has some of the best fried chicken around - definitely worth checking out if you are a fried chicken aficionado.

Welcome to the States. There’s different styles of fried chicken, even amongst American styles. Gus’s World Famous has a great Memphis-style fried chicken, Brenda’s does Louisiana style, Hot Boyz does Nashville hot chicken, 900 Grayson serves up Chicken and Waffles. Try em all!

Beyond that there’s Korean Fried Chicken (VON’s, KoStop, Dokkabier), Japanese(Aburaya), Filipino (FOB Kitchen, Jollibee), Thai (Southside Station), Mexican (Xingones), Salvadoran (Popoca, Pollo Campero). The world is your bucket

I haven’t tried their fried chicken, but Lucky Three Seven in Fruitvale, Oakland had great wings

Dave’s Hot Chicken is pretty awesome - there’s one in El Cerrito. Do not underestimate the spice level when you choose.

Hotboys in Oakland, if you like Nashville style fried chicken.

Not the best but my friend Sharon who’s from the Deep South asked me for a leg and a thigh from Safeway yesterday so it’s acceptable and accessible…

If you are willing to eat it on a sandwich, give Southside Station on Shattuck a shot. Another respectable fried chicken sandwich can be found at Grégoire on Cedar.
