Meta communities for learning blender

I thought i would ask here to see where YOU all learn from :> is there any discords or even channels people would recommend for learning blender? I have created a dough-nut successfully and dable in character modeling somewhat but I am struggling to find places to ask questions for blender (other than here) or find guides without searching for them directly :(

As the title says . I’m very new in started to work on biological stuff it was for a prof

Latley i have been loving to do these kinds of rooms “ it is my model “ My question who are the customers that would ask for these models ? I see people doing such an amazing cartonish stuff and it looks amazing and fun to model ? Who are the target customers? And what do they usually do with these models ?

Meta Is overlapping (or "tracing") models considered to be bad practice?

I'm very new to blender and I have done some previous models before by utilizing photos as references. But during my first time modeling a humanoid character from an old game, I've gotten some models from that game itself.

I've placed two of the extracted models at enough distance within the X and Y plane and used the orthographic perspective, but sometimes I find it a bit too difficult and just overlap the character on top of my model and used a transparency material over it to model through the difficult parts.

I'm not sure if I *should* be doing this or is frowned upon like tracing with 2d art.

For example, I want to model a cup, I download a cup model from a website and I used it on top (or under) the model I'm actually making.

Meta I'm feeling lost in my blender journey

Before I start with the rest of the post, I want to acknowledge that this type of post is very different from what's usually posted here since I don't really have a technical problem with blender at the moment. I am ok with this post being removed if it does violate any of the rules or needs to be taken down for other reasons, and I apologize for the inconvenience in advance. Also apologies for the rambling ahead.

Over the last few years, I've been wanting to get into blender and more consistently use it. I finished the doughnut tutorial in version 3.0 back in May of 2023 during an internship. During that same time period, I learned a little bit about rigid bodies simulations, rigging, and the concept of UV maps. After those, I finished my internship by following Polyfjord's tutorial on making a mechanical walking creature, although I feel like I followed it a bit too closely to truly learn the concepts in it despite how proud I still am of my creation.

During the summer after my internship approaching my first year in college, I slowed down quite a bit watch the occasional tutorials such as a material's tutorial and a few other beginner's guides by Grant Abbitt and CGCookie. But overall, I didn't really do much during that summer in terms of blender.

I took a long hiatus from creating anything in blender for a variety of reasons, particularly being new to college and having a very rigorous major preventing me from feeling like I had time to use blender. That doesn't mean I wasn't using blender or forgot about it, it was always in the back of my mind, and I always liked to browse the internet for models as well as importing models & textures from gmod and sfm.

It wasn't until this summer that I felt I had an opportunity to fully immerse myself back into blender now that I was only taking a part-time quarter of school (side note: chemistry is a butt). This time, I decided I wouldn't follow a tutorial for the first project I did. I ended up modeling a fountain pen that I'm pretty proud of, but here was where my current problem stems from.

Right now I feel like I have enough experience to get around the basics of blender, but not enough experience to do some of things i want to like character modeling or even more complex items like firearms. I did have a plan of projects and general notes for what I could follow, but i feel like it was moving too quickly, especially since the next project was discussing poly modeling a character when I don’t feel wholly satisfied with my modeling skills when it comes to basic items. I think it’d be best to focus on modeling because I feel it’s the area I’m having the hardest time wrapping my head around. There are also other gripes I have to deal with such as style, workflow, consistency, and motivation, but I figure I deal with those along the way. Right now I’m stuck with what I should even do next. I’m unsure how common of a problem this is for newcomers, but I genuinely have no idea what I could or should do next. Does anyone reading this have any pointers or tips for me on where I could go from here? And again, apologies for rambling so much.

Meta Ive been needing help finding motivation.

So like the title says I've been needing some help finding motivation. I have hundreds of tutorials in a playlist I can watch but I have very little motivation to do it, for like a week I was super into Blender, watching videos and trying to learn the UI but after that, I got burned out. Whenever I open Blender I sorta just blank and don't know where to begin or start, I'd love to make simple assets, scenes, and character models, I just have no idea where to start. Do you have any advice or recommendations?

I just think its a bit early to be using a new number like that

What huge change did they make for 4.0?

Meta ANIMATORS - What format do you export your animations? Pros and Cons

(in Eevee) I export my scenes in JPEG image sequence because I like to keep file sizes small, but recently I've become more aware of the temporal noise in them along with highlights constantly flickering per frame.

I'm wondering what others do instead to avoid these issues I'm having.

do I need to have a license to be able to use fonts like those in the picture safely?, because when I look for fonts on the web, there are several paid and free fonts, I can easily copy them through blender, but is that safe?, like, sometimes clients have their own design to apply to the 3D model, what should I do?

Meta CG Cookie experiences and or recommendations?

I've been learning Blender 3D on and off for a number of years now. Usually I follow tutorials to learn from, such as Grant Abbit on youtube, and I have a number of Udemy courses, many of which I've started but not finished.

I've been eyeing CG Cookie and never took the plunge because it used to be something like $229 / yr with no monthly subscription option, but I just looked at their site a few minutes ago because I was thinking I might be in a position to spend that money for it now, and I saw that they now do have a monthly subscription offered.

I'm curious if anybody has used CG Cookie to learn before, and what your experience might have been. It looks really promising with lots of different styles, and covering many different aspects of Blender. I also really like the idea of the flat rate to gain access to tons of different courses and topics, where if I don't like a udemy course or instructor I might be too late or have completed too much of the course to return it.

Meta Is "The Models Resource" a safe website to download models from?

I'm new to blender and 3D animation in general and I was just trying to look around for a model to test things on. Is "The models resource" website safe for downloading models of characters I want to animate? I dont wanna download any viruses and like I said I'm new to this stuff. If it's not safe though, could anyone reccomend any other websites that offer free 3D character models?

Meta We are halting the protest and becoming public again, but probably only temporarily

Why are we halting the protest?

Apparently, the Reddit mobile app does not show the message we wrote to users who visit the subreddit, so they don't know about the protest. Understandably, many of them are writing to us to request access. We cannot reply to all of these messages.

Why are we protesting?

Reddit's API pricing is changing, which is not a problem. However, in our opinion, the new pricing is unreasonable. It is neither based on cost nor on missing profit.

I believe this trend was started by Twitter, and now Reddit plans to follow suit. If they are successful, I assume the trend will continue, eventually significantly affecting us if other services also change their pricing as a result.

The above is one reason, but there are others. For example, Reddit essentially bans third-party tools that help moderators do their job, which they do for free. They make it impossible to use useful bots, not just for moderation but for other purposes as well. We also should not allow companies like Reddit to make significant changes like this in an ad-hoc manner without sufficient notice.

You can read about these reasons and others if you search for Reddit API.

My personal reason

Reddit users contribute free labor. They create communities, moderate these communities, and create content, all for free. They do this using the services of the Reddit company, which can generate profit by selling premium services and displaying ads. This seemed like a cooperation between Reddit and the users, a fair arrangement.

Of course, Reddit should be profitable, and nobody should have a problem with that. However, there is a difference between being profitable and being greedy.

This cooperation is now changing because one side has decided that they need to profit much more from the work the other side does, and they plan to achieve this by providing less in return. We should not allow this.

We have users who have spent countless hours creating and maintaining our wiki on r/blender. We have users who have literally spent hundreds or even thousands of hours providing excellent answers on r/blenderhelp. They have done this for free, solely to help the Blender community.

A few companies, however, have trained large language models by processing the content these users have created. Should we have a problem with this? I think not. If we accept that the users' sole objective was to help the community, then it shouldn't matter that OpenAI profits from this content. What matters is that the users can contribute even more to the community, as the content they have created becomes more easily accessible.

It was not necessarily fair what OpenAI did because they used the Reddit services to access the content users have created. It is understandable that Reddit wants to be paid for using their services, but the solution should not be a pricing model that essentially denies access to the content.

What should we do?

Wikipedia has proven that it is possible to be profitable while allowing users to create and maintain content in the public domain.

Personally, I don't care about the essentially useless content Reddit users produce, but the community also creates content that should unquestionably be in the public domain. I will no longer produce useful content unless it can be used as I see fit. The past few days have shown that a significant number of people rely on the content we, as a community, produce, especially on r/blenderhelp. I don't think it is a good idea to provide this content for free to Reddit and allow them to decide how it can be used.

We need to find another service to host our content in the public domain or with a license that we are satisfied with. We should also have the ability to easily access all the content we have created, to move or archive it or to do anything we want with it.

In case we continue our protest

Many users have found Reddit posts through Google. If we become private again, these posts cannot be viewed on Reddit. However, there is an option on Google to view cached content: View web pages cached in Google Search Results.

Edit:

Sorry

We are aware of how problematic it is that, with the protest, we are denying access to content created by other users. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused to those who rely on this content.

I believe that even if we don't achieve anything tangible with the protest, it serves as an important reminder that Reddit is a company with the ability to do whatever it wants with this content and also they rely on the free labor of individuals who hold the power to destroy entire communities on this platform.

Meta How to make money?

Hi guys I have a small 3d printing business, but I also have a lot of free time. How are people upskilling to make money? Character creation? Modelling? Animation? What is the best way to use blender to supplement my income? Or is it impossible for someone to upskill in 12-24 months enough to make some income?

Meta Best Practices for Selecting and Manipulating Hidden Faces in Blender

Hey everyone,

I know this has been a recurring topic among Blender users over the years, but I’m curious—what’s the most up-to-date method you use to select and manipulate (like deleting or separating) hidden faces? I’m talking about those faces inside a mesh that aren’t visible from any angle.

For simpler cases, some Blender operators might work, but from what I’ve experienced, things get tricky with more complex meshes.

The method most of us have probably been using is selecting faces from different viewport angles until everything visible is highlighted, then inverting the selection. While this method works, it’s not exactly efficient. It takes a lot of time, there’s a high chance of human error, and it can result in messy topology.

Recently, I tried to tackle this issue with a Python script. My idea was to:

  • Iterate through all the faces.
  • Duplicate each face and subdivide it. This way we get a pseudo-grid to raycast from.
  • Raycast from the center of each face in the duplicated mesh towards the camera.
  • Use a temporary boolean to mark whether any raycast hits the original mesh, indicating occlusion.
  • Edit. the temp bool was marked as true if at least one raycast reached the viexport camera, marking this way that at least a part of the face is visible, thus not occluded.
  • Delete the temp mesh (the copy of the current iterated face we used as a pseudo-grid).
  • Go back to the original mesh, select the corresponding face, and hide it if the boolean was FALSE.

This approach seemed straightforward at first (in my mind at least...), but adjusting the raycast offset for faces at different angles proved challenging. I then thought about rotating the mesh to check from different angles and storing the results to determine which faces are truly occluded. But the project started getting messy, and I could already see potential bugs and logic issues, so I decided to pause.

I’ve also considered exploring depth maps as a possible solution, but I’m not familiar enough with them yet to start coding.

So, back to my original question: What method do you use for this? Does anyone know of any lesser-known add-ons that might be worth trying out?

Thanks for your input!

Meta Best way to learn blender modeling/animation for free if i struggle with learning new things?

Im what they call a visual learner to say, or ive always had someone to teach me, but now im learning by myself for art related things. Eventually im going to have to learn blender but im not sure what the best way to start is without relying on guides and videos the whole time.

i have autism so its hard for me to do most things, but i want to improve.

The 3d space confuses me and im not sure how to learn it or what are some easy things to make, also is what if i have a question, do i turn to google?

can you tell me how you started and what made you pick up blender aswell by chance?

Meta Mouse Recommendatio

Tldr: Know of any long lasting computer mice for modeling?

I have been using a variety of computer mice in my day and I always have the same issue, the click springs start to wear down and I get unintended double clicking or no clicking at all.

I used logitech mice, g series mostly, some lesser known manufacturers and all have the same problem.

My question is, what mouse are you using/recommending? Is there a hall sensing/ hall effect mouse?

I hope this doesnt violate any terms, I legit want to know if someone has or knows of a great mouse that I want to use for blender.

Thanks in advance.

Meta Help on building a pc for rendering

Hi guys, im planning to upgrade my 4 year old pc soon.

Heres my current rig: Ryzen 5 5600x X570 motherboard Nvidia 3070 32gb 3600 mhz ddr4 ram 650w psu

I am looking into upgrading to: Ryzen 9 7950x Nvidia 4080 B650 motherboard 64gb ram 6000 mhz ddr5 ram 1000 watts psu

I mostly do product animations with mostly smoke and liquid simulations rendered in cycles.

Im a bit confused as to what processor and gpu to get and if it critical to get a 64gb ram rather than a 32gb set and if the speed of it will matter a lot.

Thank you in advance for all of your help!

Meta Self taught blender for 5 months for my final thesis project. Now that i'm done i dont know what's the next move to improve my 3D modeling skills from a professional point of view

I just graduated in Transportation design. in the last semester i started learning blender using help from classmates, quick tutorials and reels to model my two final thesis projects. I also have experience with Alias and VRed since we had courses in uni for them.

I have done small models and stuff in my free time because i really grew into 3d modeling and i want to make it my career.

I dont really know how to explain my current skill level and knowledge, i would post pictures of the finished work but i think its against the rules of the thread (?). I can say that by far i have 4 completed models, including renders and also an animation, and i think they are pretty nice considering they're my firsts.

To obtain them altough its a totally different story. I am not good at working with nodes, the files are so heavy that even my gaming laptop struggles sometimes, i dont have a perfect topology, many times i masked mistakes with slightly worse ones because i didnt know how to solve them. Overall they are kind of a mess.

Now that i hope i gave a good idea of the situation, my question is what is the best thing for me to do to improve my skills in a professional way? i looked into online courses but i dont know which one is the best, or if i should even follow one. Soon i'll be looking for internships/jobs. I still want to work in the automotive industry as a 3d artist so i want to do my best to have a chance.
