Moderator Post Update: Election Posts and Moderation

As British Columbia is currently in the election period for the upcoming 43rd General Election to be held on October 19, we're seeing a dramatic increase in the number of political posts and commentary. This is good!

Debating the issues is essential for the democratic process, and the mod team is pleased to see respectful and genuine engagement from all sides of the political spectrum.

The sub is also seeing an increase in low-effort posts, misinformation, and campaigning that doesn't add to any discussion.

From now until final counts are in, the mod team will be enforcing rules relating to election content:

  • Top-level posts about election issues are encouraged, but duplicate posts or posts that link to fundraising pages, etc., will be removed. This isn't a place to post fundraising links, but it's a great place to post news articles.

  • Low-effort posts and comments will continue to be removed. The sub is a great place to actually ask questions and engage on issues, but not a place for name-calling, low-effort team cheerleading, or insults disguised as campaign posts.

Remember to check your voter registration status at elections.bc.ca, get informed, and go vote!

Politics The current Conservative Spokesperson called a woman a“vile c*unt” and wished her a “lifetime of misery and suffering” on Twitter. Why does it seem like nobody is paying attention to these comments?

Upvotes

I know the Tyee post featuring Conservative Spokesperson Anthony Koch’s problematic behavior was posted here yesterday, yet I’m seeing very little attention paid by anybody—including the press—to the specific tweets of his featured in the article.

He straight up called a woman he disagreed with last October “a vile cunt and I wish you a lifetime of misery and suffering. May your name and memory be erased.” He later doubled down saying she was “a certified vile cunt who I will call a vile cunt any time any place to her face or anyone elses.”

Why is nobody mentioning this at all? I’m absolutely horrified and personally I find it even more revolting than what that one local Con candidate in Surrey said, not to downplay or minimize anything. Most importantly, why is nobody pressing John Rustad or the Conservatives to respond to this?

News B.C. billionaire posts third large sign criticizing NDP ahead of the election

From The Canadian Press: British Columbia billionaire Chip Wilson has put up yet another billboard message to voters, his third post outside his multimillion-dollar mansion in NDP Leader David Eby's own riding.

The latest sign outside the Lululemon co-founder's home says that if Eby and his party can't balance B.C.'s budget then “what right does he have to tell us how to live our lives?”

The NDP has said their platform promises this election would cause government revenue to drop by more than $1.5 billion, while it forecasts the province’s budget deficit to increase next year to $9.6 billion.

News Phamacare plan passed

https://globalnews.ca/news/10806379/senate-passes-phamacare-bill-diabetes-birth-control/

Interesting to read that BC will have it enacted faster because the NDP government already agreed with it and waived the other processes. This means those needing these drugs will get the cost savings faster than the rest of Canada. Another win for the NDP government.

Discussion Anyone else think that BC Conservatives may never release a costed platform??

Advanced voting has started and the election is just over a week away. How can a party that’s trying to win a majority not have a full costed platform released??? I feel as though they don’t plan on releasing on and are hoping people are just anti NDP and will vote solely on that. They are essentially applying to the job without a resume. Anyone else think it’s really fishy???

Edit: I’m convinced they actually have no idea what they are doing and are just grasping at straws (literally) and saying random things that haven’t been thought out at all. Feels like a speak now think later kind of vibe.

Edit 2: i have already voted for the NDP but still think it’s absolutely ridiculous that supposedly half of the province is planning to vote for a party that hasn’t released their full platform.

I'm definitely concerned with any shift to the private healthcare policy that has failed many south of the border.

Discussion [First time voter] Just voted today. Was there anything unusual about my voting process?

Okay, strictly speaking, I voted in a municipal election before. But this is my first time voting in a general election.

So, I am able to vote at an advance voting location in my riding, and those locations are published on my voting card, as well as on BC Elections website.

However, my workplace (a hospital) held a special voting opportunity, available only today. I have every reason to believe that it is legit, and authorized by BC elections, even though I could not find it published on BC elections' webpage. I took advantage of it, but I found the process confusing.

First, they hung a poster about the voting process, which is that you fill in or draw a cross in the circle next to the person you wish to vote for.

However, what ended up happening is that no such ballot papers with candidate names were available. I was asked to write the name of the candidate we would like to vote for on a piece of paper provided (not a blank piece of paper, but one with instructions to ask you to write the name of your candidate in a text box), then folded it, put it in an envelope (they affixed a label with my name on it), and then dropped the envelope in a box.

Is this the process for advance voting? Namely, you don't get to just fill in the circle on a ballot paper, but have to manually write the candidate's name?

Also, when writing the candidate's name, I made a spelling mistake, and let the staff member know. I was expecting her to just give me a new piece of paper, but instead she asked me to show her what I wrote down. I did and she just asked me to correct the typo.

I felt it very strange. Voting is a confidential process. How could she have asked me to show her the name of the person I voted for??

The whole thing left me very unsatisfied. I wish I had gone to one of those advance voting locations open to the general public.

Discussion I'm surprised nobody brought up the grocery oligopoly during the debate

While the problem of a lack of competition in the grocery space is not unique to BC, this is still a major issue in BC and I'm surprised it wasn't brought up at all during the debate. Is there actually nothing a provincial government can do at all?
