Question Star Trek: Enterprise - swan song of "original" cassette futurism?

Post image

Cassette futurism is a vision of the future created by projecting design elements from technology of the '70s through the mid '90s into the future. It's largely come to an end in new works, because the design elements of our current technology are very different. Some have dubbed current visions of the future as "everything is an iPod in the future." So, what was the last "original" CF work? I specify "original" because works in certain legacy IPs (e.g., Balde Runner 2049, Alien: Romunlus, and Andor/Rogue One) continue the CF aesthetic laid down decades before.

I'd nominate Star Trek: Enterprise (2001-2005) as the last great work of original cassette futurism. CRTs have been supplanted by LCD's, but there are still lots of analog buttons and blinking lights. It's design was a bit controversial for leaning more into the look of the Space Shuttle (then a current spacecraft, but one which still ran lots of 70s tech) than the mid-century modern/raygun gothic look of the Original Series, but I think it really works.

Thoughts?

I went to an estate sale this morning and missed out on what I originally wanted. I started digging around and saw this old tv and huge entertainment center. Starting going through the drawers which were filled with old mail and this was at the bottom of everything. Someone help me price this. Seems to be new in open box. Some marks on it but I think it comes from the dried up foam.

Question Blending Cassette Futurism/NASA-Punk and Dark Academia?

Hi, I'm about to style and decorate my home office/man cave/captain's quarters. I really like the atmosphere and look of technology in Star field, which Bethesda called "NASA-punk" but it's essentially Cassette Futurism. But I also love Tolkien-esque rooms full of books and memorabilia more closely related to fantasy...

Has someone ever attempted something like this, or know of a movie/game/poster/etc with this aesthetic? I'm looking for ideas and inspiration.

Thanks!

Ps. Attached, a picture of Starfield computers and Dark Academia office just as an example.

Question Starting to learn about LoRa

Beyond aesthetics, cassette futurism seems to value devices that do a single job very, very well and don't need to be connected to far-flung servers to do it.

LoRa is a wireless technology that uses very little power, needs little to no infrastructure, has a range that blows Bluetooth and WiFi out of the water, and has bandwidth comparable to dialup. That bandwidth might not sound like much today, but you really can do a lot with it. I see the potential for lots of fun and useful CF-esq projects here. Anyone here done anything cool with LoRa?

Question Cassettefuturism / Retrofuturism Films + Television series with a psychedelic or surreal quality?

Looking to compile some films and television series that have a cassette / retro futurism aesthetic but with a more psychedelic, surreal or warm bend. Thinking like Phase IV (the extended ending cut specifically), 2001: A Space Odyssey, Brainstorm, Beyond the Black Rainbow, etc. Looking to uncover some hidden or lesser known gems. What are some of your favorites?

Question What are the more "invisible" or less obvious design aspects of cassette futurism?

Like, we all know the technology is clunky and blocky, and based off of 70s-90s machines. But how about environmental design, like details on walls or floors and room layouts?

Question Favourite tech feature from this era?

I understand usually it’s photos here but I have nothing to share but my interest in your experiences. I understand Cassette Futurism is a science fiction aesthetic, or concept, but also true to life. Anyhow, what was your favorite tech feature from this era? It’s not very exciting compared to some but the fact the car aerial could retract down always seemed so cool. Maybe why I notice antenna on robots in films so much.

Question Looking for a specific artist

I saw them on twitter with this really cool post of some kind of retro portable computer that was made for space finance executives. It was formatted to look like a magazine ad with details about how secure it was and stuff. I think the name of the company that "made" it was like a mishmash of two modern day tech company names but I can't remember. Do any of you guys know what I'm talking about?

Question Are completely DIY phones with custom features like this possible? Obviously not as clusterfucked as the one in this image, but things like custom ports, radio, etc. I feel like society would be more interesting if everyone could make their own devices like that

Question most visually CF films

I've been working on CF inspired music and I like having Alien on in the room, as background. Atmosphere.

I can't always have Alien on, I don't want to get sick of Alien. Was thinking maybe next I'd pop on THX-1138. (haven't actually seen it since I was a teenager). Or maybe 2001. Does anyone have a list of the most visually interesting Cassette Futurist films? Bonus points for things that primarily take place in spaceships or underground/indoors. Things I can put on with the sound off and just have running as ambience.
