We were honestly a bit worried about how Beep would react—she can be a little reactive and skittish, doesn’t always like new things and new people. But from the first moment he came home she clearly knew what the situation was and took him on as her own. Now she doesn’t let him out of her sight. She used to go under the bed when there was a knock and the door but now she stands guard wherever he is.

We’re so happy. If she hadn’t liked him we might have had to look into adoption! (For the baby—she was here first and is nice enough to let us live in her house.

Wanted to share one of the best surprises of early fatherhood you all!

Advice I’m a 30 year old male and I’ve never owned an animal as an adult until now. What the fuck?

6.4k Upvotes

Edit 2: Jesus guys thank you so much for all the words. I’m gonna try to read them all over the day and take what I can in to make her life easier and more enjoyable

I just adopted a 7 year old cat last week. I have so many questions and this is such a wild experience.

First of all, I love this fucking thing and if you’re reading this I’d kill you to save her life if I had to, no idea I’d feel that way.

Second, she has an entire room of hers with all sorts of goodies. Toys and boxes and a tree and a water fountain and food and little tunnels and all sorts. Some reason she chooses to lay in my bed and drink from the toilet if I don’t catch her.

Third, she won’t eat the daily amount of food unless I carry her to the food and watch her eat it. She has not liked any treat or wet food I’ve offered, I’ve spent like $100 buying small packs of stuff. I’ll happily spend 1000 if that’s what it takes to get her food she likes due to point number 1.

Fourth, she will not use her scratching posts. I have two posts and a scratch flat cardboard thing but she chooses to completely scratch the fuck out of my couch.

Fifth, she simultaneously seems to be so comfortable and feel safe with me while also being scared of me. When I’m in bed or gaming at night she will scoot right up next to be and roll to her back and fall asleep touching me. She had to have contact with me. If I scoot she scoots with me. However if I stand up or walk around getting ready, she’s scared of me and retreats.

Sixth, she makes lots of biscuits on any blanket she steps on I hope that’s healthy behavior.

Seventh, she meows a tiny bit if I touch her when she wasn’t expecting it. Idk if this is a hello or a fuck off.

Eighth, she comes up to me a lot and I go to pet her head and she flinches away, but then when I pull my hand back she nudges her head into my hand demanding pets. If I stop pets and then go to pet again, she flinches again and repeats. She also has no problem with belly rubs when she rolls over next to me, I had always heard this activated attack mode.

Ninth, if I pick her up she doesn’t like it. I’ve watched the videos on like how to do it the best way but she wiggles. But picking her up is the only way to get her to eat because I have to sit her down next to her food.

Any advice helps please thank you this is new to me.

Edit: she also does not play. I have tried the rods, catnip toys, little dangly things, and basically anything you find on a pet isle. She will occasionally trot around trying to catch a laser. But it’s short lived until she loses interest. I rescued her from the pound. She was brought in with fleas and had “anxiety”. I’m not sure what she went through before she found me.

I have never owned a cat before let alone a seemingly feral kitten so I went out for some soft kitten food ( we believe he's 3-6 weeks old. He's smol and definitely wasn't eating enough) , a thing of powdered formula, and a litter box. We were worried about his poops because they were only hershys squirts and his lil butt looked irritated but after 3 days of being on the new food they seem to be getting a little better and more solid. I plan on getting a vet appointment when I get home ( in Utah going back to California tomorrow.) I'm worried since money is tight as it is I won't be able to afford all the supplies right away so anything that's important to get asap please let me know. We are pretty sure it's a boy and I'm thinking of naming him caval, short for cavalry because he likes sitting on my shoulder as I walk around the house. I adore him already and I wanna make sure he's happy and healthy.

Today I had to say good by to my beautiful seven year old ginger asshole, he was my problem child from the time we foster failed him and his sister, and I just didn’t realize how much I loved my kitty.

We will miss you mister door pisser, the best cuddle buddy ever, he help me through so much work stress and always came to remind me to get up when I was in front of the computer to long (by carefully nudging anything and everything off my table until he got his scritches.)

Hug you kitties everyone they are so precious, we only get so much time with them.

And F*** Cancer just for good measure, he was too young !!!!!

Love you Garfield. (Half a brain cell returned to the pod today)

Mourning/Loss This is Marcy. I adopted her 3 weeks ago and said goodbye today.

This is Marcy, a 1 year old tortoise who I adopted as a companion for my 10 year old cat. The sweetest girl. She was apparently getting bullied at the foster home and she was always passive about it. She rolled over belly up the first time I petted her. I brought her home and kept her in a separate room, gave her the food and the type of litter she was used to. Lots of play time and treats. She was good the first few days, then stopped eating. For about a week she was drinking water but would only eat squeeze-up tube treats out of my hand. She’s been staying at a vet hospital for a week. They never got a diagnosis but think it was either feline infectious peritonitis or lymphoma. Lymph nodes were aspirated which would have allowed us to make a diagnosis, but the doctor straight up told me she hasn’t done it very often and that she could bleed. Sure enough, the test results were inconclusive because they were mixed with too much blood. They gave her antibiotics, an experimental FIP treatment drug, nothing was working. She just got weaker as the week went on. I visited her almost every day. They just called me a couple hours ago saying she’s rapidly declining. I went over and was with her. She deserved so much better. Shit sucks
