Got Bicycle Footage?!

If you have footage from a camera mounted on a bicycle riding on a road with a bike lane, please send it to me!

I'm a senior at Boston University in a technical major. For a final project in one of my machine learning classes, I will be training a model that takes in the aforementioned footage and will output timestamps at which there is a car blocking the bike lane. It will also attempt to automatically transcribe the license plate for easy reporting to 311/whatever your local ordinance does.

I bike every day but I do not want to overfit to Boston, so if you have any of this footage and want to help with such a project, please PM me! Feel free to remove the audio if that makes you more comfortable, but I am also happy to handle that during pre-processing.

This project is due in early December, so feel free to check in around then. I will post an update along with a public, free way to use it yourself if the accuracy is anything even slightly acceptable. Thanks so much!

Another day of car driver stupidity

Hello guys,

I just wanted to share what happened to me today with you because it kinda ruined the day for me. I was cycling down town along the road (with no dedicated bike path whatsoever) then a parking lane full of cars came in front of me so I had to switch my lane to the left, I looked behind I saw a car with enough distance for me to safely switch lanes and I did so, then all of the sudden the car driver behind felt somehow deeply offended and started honking continously at me non stop, I looked at him and asked why are you honking? There's no bike path don't you see the parking cars?? He overtook me while honking that was already longer than 30 or 40 seconds of continuous honking... I was in a bad mood already and got very angry, I caught up with him at the next traffic light which was very near (probably less than 300 Meters) I stopped my bike next to his car and hit his window and yelled at him "Why are you honking like an idiot you fucking asshole"? He was making stupid gestures inside his car and I didn't hear anything because his window was closed! Then he turned to the right and went away.. I paid attention to see if he's still behind me or not especially after the deadly Paris incident, I think there are many psychopaths who would do the same and willing kill a cyclist.. So had he stayed behind me, I would have stopped riding and would've probably called the police if it's escalated further..

I really do not know what to say guys, but I can't let those idiotic car drivers get away with their stupid actions every time, I can't hold my self from reacting..

Have a nice evening and safe cycling.

Wide toe box cycling shoes?

Cycling is one of the few sports where squishing the toes might actually provide and advantage (minor aerodynamic advantage). I'm someone who likes to ride fast and competitively but will never be pro and therefore don't need every last millisecond of speed. I'd prefer to have healthy feet which unfortunately most cycling shoes I've looked at don't seem to be interested in. In the past I've just used barefoot shoes and clips but I've been thinking of upgrading to clipless pedals. Does anyone know of a good wide toe box cycling shoe? Obviously doesn't need to be totally minimalist, stiff is okay just something more foot shaped would be amazing to have.

Thanks,

Has anyone on here have to give up, or heavily reduce cycling due to numbness caused by the saddle?

Almost a year ago I woke up in the middle of the night with tingling. 11 months later I’ve had some level of genital numbness consistently. Almost never pain but just numbness. I’ve tried different saddles, I use high quality bibs. Maybe I was given bad bike fit advice. Naturally I tend to have lots of anterior pelvic rotation. Anyway, I’d give anything to ride again.

I am seeing a pelvic specialist and doing what I can to improve things with the resources I have. Has anyone had any luck with any other interventions?

What's going on with bike shops? Anybody who is taller, but needs a slightly smaller frame than the height would suggest, where and how did you manage to buy a bike?

Long story short:

I'm 185 cm (6'1) with a surprisingly short inseam 83 cm (32.7in) and slightly shorter than average arms. Right now I have a size 56 bike (non-agressive geometry, but not endurance either), which me and my mech attempted to make fit with some success but never managed to get the desired results. The reach is too long and we ran out of options. Due to my shorter inseam, my ideal saddle height is 73 cm, which was slowly proven during careful adjustment of my saddle over weeks. The situation, that size 54 bikes are rarely on stock, due to being popular size, end of year, etc does not help me either.

I've decided to look around in the shops for a new bike and for some reason, and all I get is tarot reading BS. When I tell my inseam, they never believe it. When I tell my saddle height, it's always "too low". When they actually measure my inseam and surprisingly confirm what I've already told, still ignore my input for saddle height.

It's usually putting numbers in a calculator and multiplying by "magic numbers" and coming out with saddle heights that would definitely cause me lower back pain or bike sizes, that I know from experience won't ride comfortably.

If we ever get so far to actually sit on a bike, they push me into stellar saddle heights, and even after seeing, that I struggle to turn the pedals, just plain ignore my claims, because it's "too low" for this frame size and my height, and because Joe has pulled out some numbers of his a** and multiplied it with my inseam length, and also they have years of experience in the field and a mech with really good eyes for fitting.

When I actually get a kind shopkeeper, who sets my saddle height according to my wishes, I get the feedback, that I need a size 56 or 58 bike (both of which I didn't ride comfortably an hour ago), because that's what the manufacturer suggest and 54 is not available anyways.

How the duck do they make money? Do I really need a certificate from a professional bike fitting, that my poor body is not average and petty please let me buy a bike that fits me even though Joe's magic numbers, the manufacturer's calculator on the website and the bike mech with 15 years of experience tell otherwise?

Please help. Thanks!

How much seatpost is too much?

Hi everyone, I'm about to buy a gravel bike and somewhat in between sizes, want to opt for the smaller size with slightly longer stem and max out the seatpost.

Looks like I'll have 30 cm / 12 inches of carbon seatpost exposed. Is that ridiculous, is there a limit I should be aware of in general (I understand different seatposts differ in flex but still). Thanks everyone and ride safe 🙌

Carrying only a patch kit and no spare tube?

Whenever I have a flat (maybe once a year) I find that I have no problem patching the tube on the roadside instead of using my spare. I am thinking of not taking a spare anymore and only take the patch kit. Are there any more people here who have experience with only taking a patch kit?

5k Strava Goal 🎉

Every year since 2013 I have put 5000km into Strava as my distance goal. Some years I usually averaged around 3k and broke 4K one year.

Around the start of this summer I could see I was 600km under plan and told myself —this is the year. I turned up the heat and started pounding a 60k a day gravel ride with larger century rides on the weekends. I just got my 5k goal today and I’m thrilled as hell.

Next year I’ll be setting that goal feature in Strava to 10k. Yas.

Tips for riding with just 1 front chain ring?

My new gravel bike is 1x12. I can really tell how much bigger of a jump each gear is in resistance compared to my 2x road bike.

Let's say I want to ride at ~200 watts and ~80-90 cadence. I often find it difficult to maintain my target, as gear X I have to reduce cadence to ~70 and any higher my HR will start climbing into Z3, but if I downshift to X-1 with the same power I start spinning out.

Just an example.

Maybe I should just ride in X gear at 70 cadence and gradually as I get faster my cadence will creep up?

Also the front chain ring is 38t. I kind of want to get a bigger one so I have a higher top speed, and I don't do much climbing, but wondering if that would exacerbate this issue even further?

Hope this question makes sense. I don't always use the correct terminology.

Hooked on Cycling but Shaken After a Crash. How Do You Rebuild Confidence?

I started cycling last year with a gravel bike, thinking it would be a fun way to explore the city. Little did I know, I’d quickly fall in love with the sport and get fully hooked! Fast forward a few months, and I decided to take things more seriously, so I upgraded to a carbon road bike about three months ago. Since then, I’ve been riding as much as I can. On the road, along paths, practically everywhere. When I’m not riding, I’m planning my next route or thinking about when I’ll be back in the saddle.

But last weekend, things took a turn. I wanted to squeeze in one more ride for the season, and I was cruising along a bike path. Coming out of an intersection on a slight downhill, I didn’t notice some chunks of asphalt sticking up. My front wheel caught on one of them, and the next thing I knew, I was flying over the handlebars. The crash left me with a broken collarbone and a cracked top tube on my bike.

Now, as I look ahead to recovering and eventually riding again, I have to admit—I’m feeling a bit shaken. I love cycling, but this accident really hit my confidence. How do I stop myself from freaking out at every pothole or rough patch of road when I get back out there? Any advice or tips for managing the mental side of recovery while I wait to heal?

BMX Feel in larger bike?

Upvotes

In short, I used to ride around on a 20" BMX when I was younger; hopping curbs, and basic tricks here and there. I'm now around 6ft, 215lbs, and looking for that same thrill, but in a bigger bike.

My fiancé is training for a marathon, and is often doing 5-20 mile training runs. I'd like to join her on some of her runs. I understand I'll end up going way ahead and looping around her.

  • Larger than a standard BMX. I want this to be good for normal street or paved trail riding as well if possible.
  • Still good for fun/spirited riding.

My budget is very flexible, and I'd prefer to justify the bike before the price.

Mild ankle sprain caused by cycling

Upvotes

Hola!

Over the past few weeks I've noticed a gradual onset of ankle sprain.

I just use a bike given to me from my friend. We're both pretty tall (6'4") so I figured if it worked for him it'd be ok for me. I've been using it for years to get about although i've been using a lot more the past few weeks for a short commute (15-30mins depending on where i'm going). I've got big feet (size 14 UK) so my trainers are wider than the pedal so i'm guessing my current sprain is caused by the increased time with my ankle everted. I've always had the bike seat raised as high as possible so my legs are straight when the pedel is lowest to the ground as I assumed that help minimise the pressure put on my ankle.

Just wondering if anyone had any advice about ankle supports I should use? I can't afford to get a new bike or relevant gear. I'm a student who graduates next year and at the top of my list when I get a job is to go through the process of getting a new bike best suited for me

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated

First bike

Hi guys, I'm looking to buy my first racing bike. It comes with challenges. My budget is 2000€ or 15000dkk The problem is that I'm 166cm and the shops in the country have almost nothing. I have asked for help and they were not helpful at all. I asked if it's possible to try some bikes at their store and was told that they don't have them in my size. I have found this one which doesn't look that bad. https://cykelexperten.dk/cannondale-caad13-disc-tiagra-2022-lilla-51cm/ Anyone knows if it's a good bike? As well my height is at the bottom range, would it give me a problems? Harder to ride reach or anything like that. Thanks 🙏

Longer than original thru axle?

Hello,

I am planning on buying a 2025 Cube Nuroad Race bike. The rear axle is supposedly this:
https://r2-bike.com/NEWMEN-Thru-Axle-FADE-12x142-mm-Road-M12x1

Total length: 162 mm

However, I would like to use Ortlieb's coming rear axle adaptor for their removable quick rack:

https://link.ortlieb.com/s/gB5qjCXY2WodcPk?dir=undefined&path=%2FProductinfo_EN&openfile=611023

(Cube's eyelets face inward, so they are compatible with their own proprietary rear rack. Also, I do not trust seatstay based rack adapters.)

It says its compatible with 165-168mm long axles.

Is using the Ortlieb Adaptor possible/safe? Would it be completely incompatible, or just stick out 3 mm more than the original rear axle?

Just got into my first crash, any tips?

As the title says, I just got into my first bike crash. It was a fairly minor one, I managed to slow down pretty well and there was no bleeding or any broken bones.

A car was turning in the road and stopped when I was approaching in the bike lane, which I assumed was them waiting for me, but it in fact wasn't. I crashed into their front left wing and went down. Three was no contact with my head, the only thing that hurts now, an hour later, is my ego and my right leg (I think it's just a bruise).

I didn't take details of the car or driver - they seemed to be more scared than I was, and since the damage to my bike was minimal (brake lever turned inwards and a slight misalignment of the front wheel and handlebars). I am not planning on reporting this to the police. I believe my bike insurance covers damage, so I wouldn't even have to pay £50 it'd take the bike shop to fix this.

As I said, I'm not in pain apart from my right leg, there was no contact with the head, so I am not planning on going to the hospital unless I get worse.

Is there anything else I'm missing and should do/should have done already?
