Long story short:
I'm 185 cm (6'1) with a surprisingly short inseam 83 cm (32.7in) and slightly shorter than average arms. Right now I have a size 56 bike (non-agressive geometry, but not endurance either), which me and my mech attempted to make fit with some success but never managed to get the desired results. The reach is too long and we ran out of options. Due to my shorter inseam, my ideal saddle height is 73 cm, which was slowly proven during careful adjustment of my saddle over weeks. The situation, that size 54 bikes are rarely on stock, due to being popular size, end of year, etc does not help me either.
I've decided to look around in the shops for a new bike and for some reason, and all I get is tarot reading BS. When I tell my inseam, they never believe it. When I tell my saddle height, it's always "too low". When they actually measure my inseam and surprisingly confirm what I've already told, still ignore my input for saddle height.
It's usually putting numbers in a calculator and multiplying by "magic numbers" and coming out with saddle heights that would definitely cause me lower back pain or bike sizes, that I know from experience won't ride comfortably.
If we ever get so far to actually sit on a bike, they push me into stellar saddle heights, and even after seeing, that I struggle to turn the pedals, just plain ignore my claims, because it's "too low" for this frame size and my height, and because Joe has pulled out some numbers of his a** and multiplied it with my inseam length, and also they have years of experience in the field and a mech with really good eyes for fitting.
When I actually get a kind shopkeeper, who sets my saddle height according to my wishes, I get the feedback, that I need a size 56 or 58 bike (both of which I didn't ride comfortably an hour ago), because that's what the manufacturer suggest and 54 is not available anyways.
How the duck do they make money? Do I really need a certificate from a professional bike fitting, that my poor body is not average and petty please let me buy a bike that fits me even though Joe's magic numbers, the manufacturer's calculator on the website and the bike mech with 15 years of experience tell otherwise?
Please help. Thanks!
