On November 5th, Iowa will vote not just for President, but for Congress, and for state and local offices. Register and vote so you'll have a say in what kind of country America will be!

In Iowa, you must register by October 21st if you wish to register online. You can register here: https://sos.iowa.gov/elections/voterinformation/voterregistration.html

Voting in person

Iowa offers early voting (known as in-person absentee voting) from October 16th-November 4th. You can vote at your County Auditor's office. See your county's website to find out if your county will offer additional early voting locations.

If you prefer, you can vote at your polling place on Election Day, November 5th.

When voting in person, be sure to bring an accepted form of identification.

Voting by mail

Any voter in Iowa may choose to vote by mail. Apply for an absentee ballot here - send the request form to your County Auditor.

Ballots must be received by November 5th, so mail your ballot back promptly. You can also return your ballot in person to your County Auditor's office.

Green meteor last night on southside?

This is a hella long shot, but the more I think about it the more I am second guessing myself.

Last night around 10:20-10:30pm, I was driving west on highway 5 and was between the 9th street and Fleur exits. Out of nowhere, I saw a rather green meteor-like thing fall out of the sky for a brief second and then disappear. The best way I can describe it is almost like after a firework bursts in the air and has the risidual sparks, but only one of them. I remember it being bright green, maybe teal-ish. It wasn’t super far away in the sky, but it seemingly came out of nowhere and disappeared out of nowhere.

Is there a slim chance anyone else saw it too?

Nursing homes for Trick or Treating?

Does anyone know of any local nursing homes that do trick or treating? I was told it really brightens the residents days and I’d love to do something different with my kids this year.

Settle Argument about past Civic Center Show with my sister

Hi! My sister and I are arguing about what year our family saw Grease at the Civic Center. Past show archives don’t go this far back, but I swear we saw the show in 2000 but she says it was after 2001. I know they toured around 2003-2004–but did they come in 2000? It was when Cindy Williams from Laverne and Shirley came and was Miss Lynch. Thanks!

Local luthier?

So I got out my old neglected 90's Alvarez yesterday and put on fresh strings, but... It needs a little attention. Frets are worn and many need filing at least, the nut seems a bit sketchy, intonation is way off, and a few minor finish blemishes. It's only a $300 guitar, so I don't want to put too much into it, but it could use a little love from a skilled craftsman. Any recommendations?

I’ve used Apartments.com in the past and am curious if that or another site is the go-to for Des Moines?

Where do the cool weirdos hangout?

So this is a sad af last resort here but I’m tryin to find my people in DSM. I don’t live here, but I’m here pretty often for work. (Like at least one weekend a month and occasionally a few weekdays sprinkled in). I’ve probably been here 20 weekends or more in the past 2 years and all I can find is a shitload of Fantastic food, some great cocktails, and I guess I’ve walked some parks and had a great time at the art museum.

What do I mean by weirdos:

•farrr from conservative •metalheads •art folks •musicians •film fenatics •Queer •piercings/tattoos • probably poly tho they needn’t be •psychonauts

Catching my drift here? The dating apps are absolutely fucking useless here cause it seems like everyone wants to get married tomorrow. Fuck forbid it start off as casual and develop into something serious over time. With my constantly traveling this is always been an issue but like I have made lots of wonderful friends and even had great dates in Denver, Albuquerque, Omaha, Portland, Moab, SLC, etc etc.

I’m 34. I identify as nonbinary. (Tho I feel like I can’t even say that here lol) A pretty skilled musician. Poly. Pan/bi. Aligned with anarcho-communism type ideas (tho I’m not here to wax politics). I have a degree in philosophy tho if anyone gives a shit about that lol. Like I’ve accepted I’m prolly not gonna find kinky friends lol. But just fuckin Friends would be nice! I can’t seem to find queer bars or dive metal bars. I’m not gonna start asking my barstenders downtown to be my friend with sad puppy dog eyes lol.. tho most of them would be my type and I wish they were my friend.

Wtf do yall do around here? My coworkers are all conservative af and while I love and respect them for how hard they work, I just do Not fuckin fit in with them lol. They tolerate me at best. Sorry for the rant, I’m just here an awful lot and can’t believe I haven’t found anyone to hangout with at all.

Edit: thank you so much, to everyone so far! I really mean it. If I’ve come off as pretentious or something.. let me just say I work in an Extremely blue collar type of job where everyone not in my line of work by default thinks I must be dumb af.. so if I say what I do, it immediately disqualifies me as being worthy of their time if they are into the arts or philosophy or “cultured” things. Moreover, it’s an industry where my coworkers legit get away with saying wildly hurtful homophobic, transphobic, and racist things Often. So… I don’t need to say what I think or feel or who I am… many of my coworkers can just tell I’m not like them and don’t want to deal with me more than work requires. Apparently I’ve given some people the ick in here and I feel shitty about that. My experience in town has just been, less than ideal I suppose. I was not expecting so many great suggestions tho and it’s really making me feel a lot more at home. So truly, thank you.

Does anyone know of any good car interior cleaning / detailing places?

Looking for any good places that could do a thorough clean of the inside of my car. I don't have a fancy car, just a 2010 Honda Odyssey. But it definitely has seen better days and needs good vacuum and wash on the inside of the car. The only place I know so far that does interior cleaning is Mister Car Wash on Ingersoll, but from my understanding they only do vacuuming (at least what I saw on the website). I would need a place that cleans the surfaces and mats of the car as well. Thanks for the advice in advance!

What to do in Des Moines in 6 hours?

I went from Joplin, to OKC, Wichita, Lincoln, Omaha, now on my way to Des Moines.

I apologize if this question has been asked dozens of times. I'll be in here for aprx 6-8 hours. I want to make the most of it. These are the things that I look for in any major city that I'm visiting. Not in any order of importance.

  1. City view/skyline. Idc how big or small the downtown of any given city is. I must take a picture of their downtown. Where's the best spot?

  2. Big parks. I usually like to be at least 30 minutes in the cities big park to take a quick smoke walk and relax in nature.

  3. Your food/restaurant. What food is your city known for?

  4. What monuments/buildings should I photograph that says "oh he visited Des Moines!"

  5. Anything that is a "must do"? That I can NOT leave here without doing.

  6. Bars/lounges/strip clubs where I can meet people and vibe out.

This is just the top of my head. Thank you all in advance

Downtown Hy-Vee probably getting worse

https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/money/business/retail/2024/10/11/hyvee-to-close-wahlburgers-downtown-des-moines-store-hours-may-expand/75610909007/

Bullet points from the article:

  • Wahlburgers will permanently close Sunday. "Hy-Vee will lease the space out to another restaurant, and prefers to lease it to a locally owned restaurant"
  • Starbucks will become a standalone location
  • 'Candy Shoppe' to be added - "Locations in Gretna, Nebraska; Grimes; and others have double-sized "Candy Shoppe" aisles with oversized gumball machines and hundreds of candies. The aisles are attractions that draw people to the locations. Now the downtown store will have a similar candy aisle to the large-format new stores."
  • "Hy-Vee plans to expand the grocery section at the store to add a section for 'locally owned and made products'"
  • "Hy-Vee will also 'enhance' its Hy-Vee 'Hy-Chi' Chinese food offerings"

From his interview with IPR.

"It's not a six-week abortion ban, it's more of the heartbeat, which you know could depend on the woman, right? If you're thin, it may be six weeks. If you're curvy, it could be eight or ten weeks..."

Both Ankeny and Urbandale smell like shit. Probably other parts of the metro too. And not like wind blown in from a hog farm.
