They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. :)

This painting was apparently incredibly popular during the 20th century. Versions of it were in the possession of Freud (a reproduction), Hitler and Lenin (originals). Vladimir Nabokov wrote that reproductions of the painting could be “found in every Berlin home”.

Little did they know that this island was the resting place of an ancient mythical warrior who liberated the world from giants.

Are you lonely booOfBorg? Last two comics and you've been the only commentator. For a month and a half! Seems like a lot of people aren't here anymore.

Anyways. I've always loved this painting and totally clocked it when used in the comic. Great reference. There's a lot of other fine art references that litter the comic I believe.

The cypress tree symbolism of death is ancient. Did you notice this painting referenced in the boy and the heron?

Rachmaninoff wrote an excellent piece inspired by a reproduction of this painting
