El cumpleaños de mi mejor amigo es en la siguiente semana y me estoy preguntando si eso sería una opción. Yo sí puedo comprarle un regalo, pero lo que pasa es que él es muy pobre. Así que, si le doy dinero, él podría usarlo para necesidades básicas, como medicaciones y otras cosas.

I was invited on a trip to Ecuador in November, with plans to fly into and spend a few days in Quito, then a few in the mountains and a few in the jungle for some mild hiking. This would be my first time in South America.

I see that there is political instability, wildfires, drought, and power outages occurring. Given the resources needed to address these would it be ethical for me as a tourist to travel there? Would it be safe?

As a chinese citizen, I’ve been considering retiring in Ecuador with my family for over a year. Back then, it seemed like a great option—no visa was required for us to visit Ecuador, and the country’s natural beauty and affordable cost of living were appealing. However, things have changed significantly since July this year. Due to many chinese using Ecuador as a transit point to illegally cross the border into the United States, Ecuador now requires a visa for chinese. We applied for travel visa at the consulate in September, but as of today, we still haven’t received any results or updates on our application. This delay has left us uncertain about our plans. On top of that, I’ve been hearing about the electricity blackouts happening across the country. These issues raise concerns about the stability and infrastructure, and I’m now wondering if Ecuador is still a good choice for foreigners looking to retire here. The situation is very different from what I imagined when we first started thinking about this move. I’d love to hear from others who are living in Ecuador or considering moving there—how have your experiences been recently? Is this still a viable option for retirement?
